A few days after the draft, was having a discussion with a Devils fan friend. We both agreed this is how things will go from that moment until draft night:

1) 90% of the "bloggers" out there will say it is Hughes to the Devils and Kakko to the Rangers. Then, everyone else will take that as fact, as if these bloggers somehow know something.

2) A few Devils bloggers, and a few others, will put out articles about Kakko to the Devils. Why? Because it is something different that will generate clicks. Think about it, if you are reading about the upcoming draft, how many possibly articles can you read saying Hughes 1st, Kakko 2nd. You see one saying Kakko 1st, it draws your attention and you read it. Whether the writer of said article actually believes it or not, they get attention, which is the most important thing for these wanna-be beat writers and wanna-be journalists.

Haven't spoke to him since the WC's started, but Kakko's performance is only going to cause a few more people to start talking about the Devils now wanting Kakko. Another friend of mine sent me a link last night. It was a poll saying 61% of responders say Hughes is still going #1. I reminded him that only one person's vote actually counts.

Dokument: 18-åriga Kaapo Kakko – hetast i VM

Some quote from Kallio (behind a pay-wall):

- Kaapo will succeed. He is unique, loves hockey. Last winter he played extra on the nature ice in Turku in the evenings. Some boys singled sticks, divided up teams and then was one of the best teenagers in the world playing with them, says Tomi Kallio, who works closely with this wonder child in TPS Turku.

- He's unique. One of the best I've seen in that age. I played with Erik Karlsson in Frölunda when he was 18 and against Niklas Bäckström in Brynäs of the same age. Kaapo is more mature and stronger in the body than Erik and Niklas. And it has gone pretty well for them later.

- We saw early that Kaapo was a great talent. And it's always a bit sensitive and can be wrong when lifting up young people and allowing them to play with older players. But for Kaapo, it went as well as possible and became right for his development.

- What I think stands out is his way of protecting the puck. Can't take it from him. He is "forest-strong". Maybe not lifting the most weights in the gym, but only has a raw strength and it is visible on the ice. Then he has courage on the ice. Dare to challenge. Not afraid to fail.

- I don't think diabetes has affected him. You do not notice that he has it. Then he is careful, mature and humble. Then you usually solve most things. Perhaps it is the humility that stands out most together with a hockey passion. Last winter he trained with TPS A-team on the day and in the evening he went and played hockey on nature ice with the kids. My sons were there and it say something about Kaapo that he goes out and plays extra in the evenings.

everyone says hughes is the best player in the draft and have for years. the ONLY people that have claimed differently are rangers fans since we got the 2nd pick trying to say we are getting the better player. its not a knock on kakko. he's gonna be great and i'm super excited. but hughes is the top guy and if we had the top pick we would take hughes
Exactly. There is no way that Shero does not take Hughes. That type of second guessing gets you fired. Shero cannot afford not to take Hughes. He cannot second guess himself and watch Hughes become one of the league's top players playing across the Hudson.

It has been discussed here the last few weeks. While I don't think it's an issue, others seem to be a bit worried about it.
As a HCP, I'm not at all concerned. Type I diabetes is manageable if you're disciplined, which Kaapo seems to be. My comments about being a diabetic and having celiac disease being tragic stem from NYC having some of the world's best Italian food and pizza.

I don't read the other boards anymore so I can't speak to them. However there were definitely people here saying that Kakko was even with Hughes way before we miraculously ended up with a top-two pick and the Devils ended up with the top pick. A few people have been sharing concerns about Hughes' build for a while now, while simultaneously talking up Kakko's impressive physical abilities for his age. You're certainly correct that since the draft order was established this "They're even/Kakko's better" talk has picked up substantially, but it did exist here before anyone realistically imagined we'd have either.

For what it's worth, I was not/am not in that camp. But I did read it a good bit. I myself said I thought they were pretty close in terms of overall talent, but that Hughes is a no-brainer at 1 (which I still think).

The whole Kakko over Hughes thing is certainly loudest on HFBoards.

I will also say that if you took a survey before and after the draft as to who our board would prefer, I think you'd get different results.

Best in the US ;)
There's great Italian food all over the world. You would know about the best spots in Europe (outside of Italy) better than I would, so I'll take your word for it.

If you ever come back to NYC, take a walk down Arthur Avenue and Little Italy. Some places will go toe to toe with the best places in Europe or even Italy itself.

If teams are picking based on who will be and impact player next season, I think Kakko would be the right choice. Not just because of how he is performing, but because of Hughes being smaller and needing couple of seasons (or just one who knows) to adjust.

But teams are not drafting just based on that, and this is why you have a bunch of scouts analyzing each feature of the player and making the overall assumption of his current play and ceiling. I still think Hughes will go #1 (I hope so 'cause I'd really like to see Kakko as a Ranger), and I don't think the Devils would make a mistake doing so.

If it was truly a problem, it would have been made known by now and he wouldn't be ranked nearly as high as he was for a year. Other plays deal with similar issues and have and are successful. Obviously, with modern medicine and technology, NHL teams are able to easily help their players manage it.

I think that's just human and fan nature, Edge. That being said, Kakko has convinced me fully that the gap between him and Hughes is razor thin.

Good Italian food here in NYC. Probably best in America, but Italy-level?

Nope.

Arthur Avenue is good, but no longer great, overall.

Lots of great Italian all over NYC. This is a pretty good list.

I've always loved Il Mulino and Park Side in Corona.

I honestly haven't been to Arthur Avenue in years. If I were to go back it would be mainly for the bakeries and delis rather than the restaurants around there.

Never been to il Mulino but have heard great things about it.

I think it's still close, with Hughes have the slightly higher ceiling, while Kakko has the much higher floor.

I think they're closer than they were at the start of the year, but not quite as close as to make it the intriguing story some want it to be.

I also think that if Hughes is more or less the unanimous choice at this point, when even his most vocal supporters feel he is not physically mature, that probably lends itself to there being a moderate gap if/when both guys hit their strides.

There is no doubt in my mind that Kakko has a stronger impact in year 1, and perhaps even in year 2, as well. Like you mentioned, however, it's about who is better in five years or so. Hughes' possess traits that make him incredibly dynamic and give him the chance to have that higher ceiling. However, while I think incredibly highly of him, there is no lock that he manages to put everything together and to reach his maximum potential. I feel quite strongly that Kakko is going to be a franchise quality player and one of the best wings in the league. With Hughes, I feel as if he has the potential to be an elite 1C which is always more valuable than an elite 1W, but I feel a bit less confident he will fully reach that potential. Like you, I likely still go Hughes at 1, but even five years from now, I think it's a lot closer than I initially thought.

Kakko is so impressive, he looks a little like Jagr protecting the puck.
