HFCHI doesn't want anything to do with Podkolzin, they are split down the middle between Byram and Turcotte.

E: This has literally no implications on the Rangers, not sure why I brought it up.

Can't see Byram falling to 10, especially over 2 other dmen.

FWIW on 31 Thoughts, they interviewed Shero after the lottery and he said Hughes name a bunch, and didn’t mention any other players by name. Also said “It’s always great when you get a chance to draft a player like Jack.” So, feels pretty safe to fall in love with Kakko, if anyone was worried

I’d take Caufield or Newhook waaaay over McMichael

I’d think RW would be best to start - we’ve needed finishers forever and we don’t get good wingers often who have the prime handedness to shoot first from their wings - lefty RWs and righty LWs
Gaborik, Nash, Zuccarello, Buchnevich. Kravtsov also projects as this.

So, giving Tampa the Cup and Stars out in first 2 rounds?

Again for those of you worried about NJ taking Kakko. For that to happen, they would have to leave a guy on the table who has generational skating ability, that is on par or better than Connor mcdavid(not just straightaway speed, but lateral, edgework, ect) - this has been cited by multiple scouts. He also has elite playmaking ability and vision. So, first of all, NJ would never in a million years risk leaving us a player like that to take. Second, if they did, why are we upset again? This is an absolute win win situation. I cannot wait for June!

Guys,

First time in a long time! You may remember me from the late 2000s as "NYRangers25" - my last series of posts were about my girlfriend Kate, and some of you up in the 300 and 400 sections were really helpful with advice! If you remember me from 9 years ago, awesome, if not, that's okay too.

Anyway, I couldn't be more excited to be back on HF. I have a key question for you, as I'm trying to settle a debate with my brother and best friend.

Is Kakko on the same tier of prospect as Cherepanov was? My friend Peter is laughing me out of the building. He says comparing Kakko to Cherepanov is like comparing Ovechkin to Zherdev...but wasn't Cherepanov an elite prospect? Broke Ovechkin/Kovalchuk Russian records, the next Pavel Bure etc? I know he fell to the Rangers pick because of work ethic concerns, but in terms of talent wasn't he a 'can't miss type'? Again, Peter is laughing at me because he thinks this debate is truly absurd.

Please set me straight and SEE YOU IN THE BIG ROOM IN 2020! DRIGGS AND 9TH! WOOO!!!!!!!!

Kakko has cherepanovs scoring prowess but brings a complete, NHL ready game. Kakko is the better prospect for sure.

cherapanov was kovalchuk level prospect no doubt, the reason he dropped was because he was russian, not because of work ethic concerns.....guy would have been a stud

Thinking Newhook over McMichael ?

Personally, I'd take Caufield, Newhook, and Brink over McMichael at 22 without so much as a second thought.

Every time Kakko plays against the Devil's, he'll remember that they passed up on him for Hughes.

I recall Gronks saying the same thing about the Bills when they passed on him in the second round of the 2010 draft. The Bills selected DT Troup with the 42nd pick and the Pats took Gronk at 43 . He always played with an extra edge against us. Funny how some players take that personally.

He will play preliminary games and then will either make it or not to World Championships. Chances are really good if he just keeps up with how he has been playing recently.

Today he is playing in the first line against Denmark: Leijonat - Tanska-Suomi klo 20, Yle Areena näyttää ottelun suorana - Leijonien kentälliset

It's streamed in Finland but that's geographically restricted so that you are only able to see it from Finland. Maybe with a VPN you could be able to watch it: Jääkiekon Nordic cup | Jääkiekon Nordic cup: DEN - FIN
Especially since we won't be receiving many Finns from the NHL, Barkov is pretty much the only big name player who has said he's interested. Many Finns in the playoffs and then contract negotiations.

Finland also changed its attitude towards younger players in the recent years. No use of dragging some KHL or Liiga veteran who maybe marginally better now, better to establish good relationships now so in the future young players are always interested in the NT. Rasmus Ristolainen has declined every single time for how many years in a row, and there is some talk that he's bitter when he was dropped from the squad among the last cuts because he was marginally worse than some KHL-defenseman (can't remember who).

I get that. But let's not pretend teams went off boards just because they disagree with mock drafts. Teams have large groups of professionals come up with their lists. Mock drafts are done by a fan sitting in a single time zone who, at best, watched a few prospects a few times, but mostly those creating mock drafts just copy each other's lists.

If with the 22 OA pick the Rangers choose Jackson LaCombe, they may not be going off board - it is just highly doubtful anyone making mock drafts was watching High School hockey in Minnesota, but the Rangers no doubt did. It's not going off board, it's knowing more.

Since team draft boards are top secret, I’ve always felt the term “going off the board” meant going away from the media/fan mocks/rankings. It’s a media term anyway.

Look at Senyshyn. Every blogger/analyst called it off the board the second the pick was made and Bruins fans went bananas, saying Bruins knew the kid better than we did.

Barzal, Connor.... we know how that story went.

Scouts can be guilty of analysis paralysis, as can media/bloggers. But again, “off the board” is a nice way of saying “damn, you’re taking a bigger risk than we thought”.

I'll admit I don't know draft picks like most--but if the Rangers do pick in those spots and those players anyone have some insight into those players.

Yup. Then he threw out something like, "but there's lots of great players in this draft" to try to walk-it-back a bit, as the NHL does not like it when you announce early & kill their media/ratings drama fests. But it's incredibly obvious Hughes is going #1.

-DARREN.

I think a little higher.

I'd say Cherepanov was closer to where Podkolzin is this year. Scout's loved the talent and skill, but there were some other factors at work. In his case, his draft coincided with the height of concerns about young Russian players staying to play in the KHL.

I would be so pissed if Newhook is there and we pass on him.

I would be so pissed if Newhook is there and we pass on him.

I would not be happy about that.

I've said it before, but I think if you put Newhook in the same position and roles that Turcotte and Zegras were in this season, he's probably right in the mix with them.

As it is, I think there are a few more question marks there, but if you're talking about getting him 15-16 picks after those guys, that's a hell of a value pick.
