It's why I didn't understand Grier not wanting to retain any salary on Karlsson.

I understand that he achieved his goal but why not retain the max and stock up on as many draft picks/prospects/players as possible?
Because it isn’t a video game?

Hey thanks for weighing in with a stupid answer after people actually replied in earnest.

I know it's not a videogame. And I figured it was the owner keeping the wallet closed on this one. I doesn't change that with some retention they might've sweetened the return from one of their biggest assets and jumpstarted a rebuild.

Yzerman bought out Abdelkader so was paying him to not play for the rebuilding Wings and retained on Vrana. Things happen.

I think anyone could've taken a look at that roster going into the season and knew they were going to be in for a historically bad year. They were terrible last year too but Karlsson was able to steal a couple wins for them throughout the year.

As historically bad as they might be this season, the prospect pool is starting to look pretty decent for the first time in years. Getting the first overall pick in 2024 would do wonders as well. This season might be nauseating to watch, but it’s tough not to be excited about some of the talent in the pipeline

Do you not know there was “some retention” on this deal? From the very beginning of the EK65 trade rumors (2/23) there was mention of a maximum of 18% retention (actual was ~13%).

Retaining the max (~$23M) would have represented ~1/2 of Abdelkader and Vrana’s combined career earnings. You can’t understand why an owner wouldn’t whip open up their check book to pay a player that much not to play for the team?

There was also almost no competition due to league-wide cap constraints for teams that would benefit from adding Karlsson, so it was a “take what you can get” scenario.

See, was that so hard? lol

Yes I knew there was some retention. I didn't follow the Karlsson rumors that closely so hadn't heard the max 18% retention. And I didn't mean it to sound like "max retention or bust." Just that I was surprised there wasn't more retention and hopefully a better return.

For the record it wasn't meant as a shot at the Sharks. I wondered if it was ownership not paying out and the fans ultimately suffering for it.

David Quinn is a real problem...
He is probably the worst coach in NHL history at developing talent.
Nobody progressed from his first year to his second year under his tutelage.

Mike Grier probably hired him... because he wants to get low picks for the foreseeable future. But he is a cancer around young NHL talent. This isn't college hockey. He is out of his depth.

People are going to say... "Look at the roster... what do you expect?".... Lame excuse.... These are still NHLers... The NHL is a game of parity... People can't and don't play for him.

Keep Eklund, Bordeleau & Will Smith as far away form Quinn as possible.
Nah, that roster is trash. There's nothing there.

I'm not saying the coach is great or anything, but it's obvious that the main issue with the team is the roster itself.

Without exaggeration, this might be the worst roster of the 2000s. Currently, the only truly legitimate player is Hertl, and even he is really not that great. If they were healthy, the situation would be a bit better. But they aren't.

This team might have single-digit wins this season.

Sharks are obviously rebuilding and have a high amount in various forms of dead cap space, plus a couple of players who are almost dead cap space like Vlasic.

However, almost all of this comes off the books when McDavid, and Eichel are eligible for UFA.

So I expect the Sharks to have quality draft picks and rebuild, then sign one of those.

At least they got their Cup…makes all of this suffering somewhat tolerable.

Are they going to trade poor Hertl? He deserves a team somewhere.
When he's ready to go. He probably wanted to stick around for family stability. At least for a time. I think the team would prefer him being dealt after the Burns retention ends.
