It's why I didn't understand Grier not wanting to retain any salary on Karlsson.

I understand that he achieved his goal but why not retain the max and stock up on as many draft picks/prospects/players as possible?

It was the length of the retention that was the issue. He didn't want to have ~6M in cap space being tied up to a former player up to 4 years down the road when he needs to be flexible in case something happens and the Sharks become good before then.

Anything can happen in Hockey and in Sports in general in a short amount of time. Both the Rangers and Diamondbacks combined for 210 losses 2 seasons ago, look where they are now.

No guarantee Grier even had much of any say in retention on Karlsson.

Doesn't seem super likely San Jose's ownership was interested in paying someone 20+ million dollars over the next 4 years to play for someone else while their own team is going to be suffering at the gates on account of being a tire fire.

This thread is actually underselling how bad they are

This isn't one of the worst teams of the cap era, it's one of the worst teams of all time

Through 9 games:

10.97% of the way through the season

0-9, 1 point in the standings

Outshot by 125

Outscored by 26 (25 discounting the shootout goal)

On pace for the 2nd worst offense of all time, the single worst offense in 10 years, and the only offense in the bottom-25 all time since World War 2

The only team to have scored less on a per game basis is the 1929 Blackhawks

As the vibes in the lockerroom solidify and congeal I suspect this will only get worse

David Quinn is a real problem...

Mike Grier probably hired him... because he wants to get low picks for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately it's worse than that, Mike only hired him because they went to the same school

Gotta' limit those high danger chances again.

Just kidding. It means nothing if you don't score.

Ya but they’re like no light at the end of the tunnel bad, no flashes, no signs of life bad.
It’s absolutely brutal. We had the least amount of wins last year also which is depressing that we ended up picking 4th due to the lame point system and Will Smith isn’t the caliber of player the Sharks need to make this rebuild go faster.

Grier needed to gut that roster by moving their valued vets to hoard picks and prospects, makes the awful start feel like there's some light at the end of the tunnel for talent in the pipeline.
Our interim GM Joe Will stupidly resigned Hertl two seasons ago when we should have traded him for a haul.

That one extra win last year cost us Bedard/Fantilli. I bet we get jumped for Celebrini like the ducks did for Bedard.

Tanking is harder to do than most assume. Players and coaches have pride and teams play down to their opponents. David Quinn continues to be a sum of the parts is less than the whole coach. Some coaches squeeze an extra 10 points out of a team, Quinn squeezes -20 out of his.
Ya, it's the coaches fault lol

I saw Vlasic on the f***ing powerplay this weekend.

From what I saw Blackwood is doing miracles...things could be worse if that's even possible

It's not as though they have no scorers, they're just not scoring

Nico Sturm had a great season for the Sharks last year by his standards - nothing through 9 games this year

Kevin Labanc and Alexander Barabanov are at least decent middle 6 forwards - nothing through 6 games this year for either guy

Anthony Duclair and Luke Kunin likewise are decent complimentary middle 6 forwards - 1 goal apiece through 9 games

Even Tomas Hertl only has 1 goal through 9 games

At a certain point, if almost no one is producing - that's a coaching issue, its not as simple as "Sharks bad"

Not one NHL level player in that group. I honestly struggle to see how they are meant to rebuild a D corps from 0 good players to 6 with no support whatsoever for any new and promising youngsters.

Even with all the tanking plans, this will cause sizable issues down the line. What message does this send to Eklund, Bordeleau and co.? How are you meant to find your goalie, when nobody can succeed behind that abomination of a team?

I mean...they weren't THIS futile, and could score some goals at least.

But they were defensively one of the worst teams ever seen. I bet even this year's Sharks could score 3+ a game against them. Assuming the two teams being on the same ice didn't trigger some sort of spacetime-shattering disruption.
