Nah man our window closed when we lost Saad. Remember?

f*** the windows.

For what it's worth I was one of the people arguing our window wasn't over/close to being over forever. I'm pretty sure I wasted more keystrokes than anybody with Henchy/whoever else arguing this.

I'm not even complaining/being negative. Just saying realistically this is probably the best chance the Avs will have at a cup over the next few years. They should continue to go all in and make the team better. Hopefully they will today and it'll make what I'm saying even more true.

The next few seasons are the Avs best shots and it's downhill from there. Unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat with trades like the Toews one, signing like Nuke or finally hitting big with a draft pick.

Yeah I remember you and I taking that position that the window could stay open a while after Nate's raise, because that's the way CMac was building it. For me their young D core was a big part of that.

Things looked like they may change a bit after trading a young D man like Byram, and Mikko's raise, but depending on what Necas signs for, things could be similar to what we thought back then. Need to improve the D core though IMO.

I agree this migth be their best chance to win the next few years, but I'm basing that a lot on how healthy they are currently going into the playoffs (knock on wood it stays the same) which hasn't been the case in a lot of recent years.

So if we're looking at odds, then this might be the healthiest they'll be the next few years + MacK having an unreal season + motivated Val to make up for lost time + motivated Necas fitting in well + Toews playing better + motivated Nelson at 2C + potential moves tomorrow + possibly Landy back and the team wanting to win for him and Brock, and I think it's fair to say this could be their best chance at a Cup the next few years, even if they can still win more.

Best chance yes that I agree with. But we do still have the core locked in, including two top-5 players in the world, for at least 2 more seasons after this one. Salary cap era NHL has very high parity which is why no team will ever have particularly high odds of winning the cup. For example current best odds from Moneypuck is for the Panthers at 15%, which still means they would at average need 7 runs at those top odds for 1 cup. What you need to do is get to the playoffs. There can be a few weak teams in the playoffs that really don't have a chance, but most of them do and that imo is the "window".

Obviously hope to be wrong and it'll change things if I am but I'm operating under the impression that Nelson is going to tough to re-sign. It was rumored he wanted a 4-5 year deal, no? He was with NYI for his entire career and seems like a pretty loyal guy. The rumors of him wanting to play for Minny doesn't help considering they aren't even contenders. Cap's exploding on top of all that and it's his last chance at cashing in. Gotta see how it plays out but I think the most likely outcome is he either walks or signs a really big deal that nobody loves here. If he signs a good deal and can fight off regression than yeah that changes the conversation.

Gotta see what happens today with Mitts as well. If he goes to Boston for Marchand than I think it becomes pretty obvious were fully all in and it's fair to question how many years we have left in this spot.

I agree with the idea that the Avs will always have a "shot" as long as Makar/MacKinnon are playing like they are currently and the NHL is random as hell and cinderella runs happen. I guess I mean "final push" as a team that's considered a top favorite. IMO the Avs are currently pretty close to that with this deal and if today is good I think they can be argued as top dogs assuming Nelson plays at the level everybody's expecting. I just don't think the Avs have many left like that if at all. Once again operating under the assumption that's Nelson is either walking or being overpaid to stay. If he signs for like 6 x 5 and fights off regression for 3 more years than it's a different ballgame but I think that's a pretty biased stance to take atm.

Soucy for a 3rd and we paid a 2nd+a 4th+ Parssinen for Lindgren?
Lindgren is a better skater, a better PKer, has more physical edge, more playoff experience, and has played against top line opponents a lot. Soucy hasn't had a good season and has extra term so there's some risk associated too if he isn't a good fit.

So, we have $1.3M in cap space left today at a 23 man roster I believe.

Send Middleton down and you've got $2M left to grab another Dman.
Middleton would need waivers though, and he'd surely get claimed by a TDL seller needing replacements. He would have had to be waived yesterday too to not count towards the TDL roster I think.

It’s insane how negative this board is all the time. Your GM is laying it all on the table to get you a cup and all anyone can do is complain
Gotta love how they are really going for it. It might not work out at all, but you gotta try.

Would still like to see an upgrade on Malinski.

Quick question around the Bruins / Avs rumours:

Marchand 50% Retained
Coyle

for

Middelstadt
???

Coyle takes his spot on 3rd line and also takes over PK duties (Marchand could as well) and Coyle's contract is almost the same price tag but only for next year. Likely Marchand is a rental.

Cheers
Carlo is the main piece to get from Boston imo

It's a bit terrifying because we are not exactly top of the standings and we are definitely taking a small leap of faith.

There were some years where we didn't do too much and decided to not do much or kinda whatever moves.

Very curious to see CMac's next move(s).

The roster is full at 23 guys, but there's still $1.399m in capspace so it's unlikely that we're done.

A conservative day of adding just a bottom 6 forward like Brandon Tanev ($3.5m) would still require a body moved out, as well as double retention unless Wood goes the other way.

Of the bottom 6 forwards it's safe to say that O'Connor and Drury aren't going anywhere, and that CMac won't look to move Kelly or Kiviranta given that Bednar likes them, nor Vesey as we just acquired him. So Wood and possibly Colton seem the likeliest to be moved in a hockey trade. And Malinski on D.

I'm warming up to the idea of moving Mittelstadt today as well. He'll likely never fetch as good of a return as right now given the market. I still lean towards keeping him though, and having good center depth instead of being an injury away from having Colton or Drury at 2C. If there's a good deal to be made that helps this year though that would be interesting.

Just saw that Edmonton paid a 1st+ for Walman, who SJ received a 2nd for last year. That's some amazing asset management from Grier, basically getting a 1st + 2nd + ~60 good games from Walman, for nothing. He started off slow but he's doing a lot of good things for SJ lately, acquiring Askarov notwithstanding.

I thought the Hertl retention was stupid, but he's done a great job lately. They have one of, if not the best young core in the NHL. Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Dickinson, Askarov. Great start, and they're probably picking top-3 again this year.

God damn it. I fell asleep last night what couldn't have been more than 30 minutes before all hell broke loose. Woke up at 5AM my time with notifications going off like crazy on my phone.

- Son of a bitch, cMac pulled off getting a 2C and holy shit did he pay for it. But seriously, f*** those picks. It's time to win
- At that price, I have to imagine they try to extend Nelson and pray his body holds up for a few more years
- Rantanen going to Dallas was predictable and it sucks. But I do see Dallas as much weaker this season due to their D
- I'd like to see them trade Mitts today. Either for futures or go all f***ing in and get a Marchand/Carlo package

Even with an extension, people suggesting Johnston for Mikko is insane.

Wyatt Johnston is arguably the better overall player right now and he hasn't entered his prime yet.

11 point difference but Johnston is a great two-way forward and can play the more important center position.

It would never, ever happen. He is the most untouchable aside from Heiskanen on that team.

Grier is doing a great job so far. It's a bit easier when you can just tank and add futures with zero pressure. The hard part comes once the Shark are expected to win something.

Mercer
Marchand
Carlo

Keep an eye on these 3 players tomorrow...
Lehkonen - MacKinnon - Necas
Drouin - Nelson - Nichushkin
MARCHAND - Drury - MERCER
Kiviranta - Kelly - O’Connor

Toews - Maker
Girard - Manson
Lindgren - CARLO

Blackwood
Wedgewood

Do you know if Colton (+?) would be enough for Mercer? Or is Mercer a piece we could only expect back as part of a package for Mittelstadt?
