2ppg would be enough for his first season. But what comes to the second season, Granlund really needs to achieve something then. I think he can break Gretzky's record on his first season also but I'm pretty shy with this. He's not so good.

So, 1st season: about 50 + 100 (min.)
2nd season: 100 + 200 ?

With Granlund, we'll have to develop new stat lines in my estimation. Forget about predicting these worthless goals and points you all speak of.

Honestly, I don't think +60 is even close to being realistic. there reasons are as many already mentioned, the style of game, long trips, long seasons, but the biggest difference will be the size of the rink. It takes away the parts that benefit granlund the most, time and space. Even on the pp there will be less time and space to work with. Personally i don't think he can go over 55 and might get only 30, in the worst case scenario. I think 35-50 is realistic, it will depend a lot on how much PP he plays.

Btw, the comparison to Kane and Nugent-hopkins is not fitting here, since they played in small rinks before NHL.

Some people claimed that he has adjusted well before, but the transition from A-junior sm-liiga --> sm-liiga is not nearly as big as sm-liiga-->nhl in traveling, amount of games per season, size of rink(the same actually) etc. And the WC was played in similar rink to sm-liiga. this also makes the comparison to NHL players a bit questionable.

I think he will have a great career, but offensively he won't come near Selänne and probably won't ever have a +90 point season, a couple 80 points season perhaps. And that would make me extremely happy. Great player.

This is a very reasonable post.

One thing that strikes me whenever I look at Granlund highlights is how much room and time he has. The game looks like slow motion compared to the NHL.

I think players with Granlunds vision and hockey IQ make the game around them look slower, they just seem to find the space and time to make the plays.

The player in the NHL he reminds me most of his Pavel Datsyuk, just his style of play, Hockey IQ, passing, hands. They seem very similiar to me. Obviously it remains to be seen if he can become the next Datsyuk or poor mans version of it, but players like that seem to be able to make their own space to make plays.

Don't forget Jagr came over from a similar league as a PPG player and kept it up..

I don't know that his skills WON'T translate directly to the NHL. I just wouldn't be surprised if he need some time to adapt, and his point totals might reflect that.

Jagr's transition might have also been helped by his size, an area MG comes up a little short in.

Lol, crazy fans! What tells you he won't spend a year in the AHL next year?

Because it just doesn't make any sense to send him to a league that's at the same level tops as the one he's playing now, which he's ripping apart. Might as well play another year here. Some said he would've been NHL ready already at the beginning of this season, and if I've understood correctly the Wild tried to get him onboard this year already. He's as NHL ready as they get. And this is said without my Granlund goggles on which I admit I own.

If he plays in the AHL it will be only for some time, not the whole season.

Ice is different, playstyle is different.
Why would Granlund be any different than any other euroleague superstar that didn't manage to keep it up in the NHL? Genuinly asking here.

Granlund is different than any other euroleague superstar. Granlund wont play in the AHL unless he's injured. And if he does, he'll play 1.5 point per game pace. Point per game in the NHL next season if he's healthy. You'll see.

Dude. Really? Nice comparison. :sarcasm: Granlund has absolutely nothing to do with Jagr. They are different players, in different levels and very different styles of play.

I believe that Jagr is actually honored to be compared to FBJ (:sarcasm: just in case)

Lol, this is ridiculous to say the least.

I frogot to mention that I believe it would be best to start him off in the AHl, unless he totally owns during camp. It will relieve pressure and give him time to adjust. But I don't think he'll spend a lot of time in AHL, maybe 10-15 games. That should be enough for a primary adjustment to the big rink, thereafter it's just aobut the small things, which he can develop in the NHL. In addition, I think it'll serve him better to play in the NHL and get some PP time in the NHL, than to continue on the lower AHL level.

We don't know if he'll be different. But it is hard to believe he won't at least produce around 55-60 points during his career consistently with maybe a few peaks. On a different team, say sharks or flyers, he'd probably produce 60-70 points consistently during his "prime" years. I don't know if you call that not keeping it up, but I think those are good numbers on a Wild team.

I have been following hockey since 80's and I've had this kind of expectations only for 2 players before; Selanne, who overachieved and Koivu who underachieved their rookie season (in my expectations).

It may take time to adapt, many superstars like Sedins, Giroux etc. weren't key scorers in the beginning...it's also a matter of ice time.

The point is which role Granlund gets in Minnesota. It should be top 6 minutes plus PP time with Heatley. If so, I'm not surprised if he makes close to PPG as a rookie.

If he plays in 3rd line he will make his linemates better but points will get lover of course. But to put guy like him to AHL is madness

Granlund won't need to adjust to NHL. NHL will have to adjust to Granlund.

It's always a sad day when Finland produces a star that will screw Sweden over in tournament after tournament.

Ville Leino scored 77 points in 55 (1.4 ppg) games before coming to NHL and look how his career stats progressed after that. Granlund ppg is now 1.28, so he's not a sure thing to light NHL to fire even if he's younger. I know it's "only" the stats, but still something to think about. NHL is a whole new territory compared to Sm-Liiga.

Ville Leino is a pretty bad comparsion IMO. Granlunds Hockey IQ is way better than Leinos. Granlund has a lot more grit than Leino. Granlund never floats like Leino. Granlund is already stronger physically than Leino and will only get better. Mikael is a very agile skater unlike Leino.

Leino is a skilled skinny forward who at times plays outside of the game. He Exploited the big ice very well with those silky soft hands but it was obvious he wouldn't be able to do that in small rink. Granlund plays in the tough areas all the time so I don't think there will be much problems with him adjusting to NA style.

Differend year. Not the same thing. Janne pesonen had 78pts in 56 games and won scoring race against Leino. Now Pesonen is better( he's now regular in NT) than 4 years ago. Pesonen has 0,76 ppg and Granlund 1,28 PPG. Think about that. FEL is much better now than 4 years ago. Bad comparison.
