The Race for the Calder Trophy

Yeah I think they are comparable, at least when Hughes is healthy (which unfortunately hasn't been too often). It wouldn't surprise me if Bedard ended up being more productive, but I don't think he'll have the same 3 zone impact.

I still like the Kucherov comparison for Bedard.
Think it’s pretty hard to say what a player is going to be after one 18 year old season on the worst team in over a decade.

I don't disagree that it's hard, but it's no different than projecting them before they get in the NHL.
Seems more like wishful thinking on your part to compensate for some sort of narrative you're pushing. I don't see the value in harping on and on for paragraphs at a time about an 18 year old 1C's poor defensive and possession numbers.

He's excelling at the most difficult position in the sport on the worst team we've seen in a long time. "Oh but his defense!" GTFO dude

The best part about this chart is Crosby's 110 PIM sticking out like an infected hangnail.

Penalties were given out like candy on Halloween back then. It's part of why he had so many points as a rookie (PPs) and why hia sophomore season was his career high.

A huge part of excelling as a center is taking care of the defensive side of the game. I've stated countless times how great he's been offensively, but there's more to the sport than that. It's crazy that's some controversial idea.

I find it hard to believe that a player of his hockey IQ will be a bad defensive center. Its not like defense is hard. Effort and positioning. Maybe the lack of elite skating will make it harder but that has never really been a pre-requisite to be a great defensive center either.

Just need him to be competent.

Sure Bedard can score points but any truly worthy candidate for the Calder really isnt worth considering unless they are also in the running for the Selke or Norris.
Good defence is where its at and should always be the ultimate determining factor. Being only 18 and right out of Jr hockey is no excuse. You don't see Brock Faber using that flimsy excuse.

I know right. Barzal and Pettersson and Panarin and Kaprizov(!!!!!) were all Selke caliber!

I shouldn’t be so hostile my man.

I just don’t think the defensive concerns you have are as relevant as you consistently argue them to be. He’s so young and his team is so bad.

1) When you have this level of offensive talent you don’t really need to be more than passable defensively. He’s most likely going to be one of the premiere scoring forwards in the league for a long time.

2) He lives and breathes hockey, I’d bet he figures that part of his game out quickly as well. It’s so so so early and he’s performing incredibly well offensively at least which demonstrates an understanding and vision of the ice so far.

His defensive play is irrelevant at this point in the Calder race and nothing Faber has done so far will sway voters minds. It’s plain as day how special of a player Bedard is.
