The Race for the Calder Trophy

Lets say Stankoven continues to produce with this high rate, he'll play max 24 games
scores 35-45 points, about +25, his ppg avg would be 1.45 - 1.85

Bedard ends up with 55-60 points in 68 games 0.82 - 0.88 ppg, about -55

Which one do you think deserves the Calder trophy? should win.. wins Calder

All this is hypothetical, obviously
I believe its kind of like with other trophies like the Hart if you arent on the ice you arent the most valuable or you will have to make up a lot for the time missed.

Of course if Stankoven gets 1.85 ppg and is around 10 points back of Bedard then it will be a discussion. Still right now he is at 1.33 and will probably have to improve on that as 32 points wont be enough to close the gap.

Also voters know he will have his chance next year. Would be interesting if he played at a 1.85 ppg and won then he would still be eligible next year and could win two years in a row I guess.

There's gotta be some rule in place that would prevent this, right?

That's unheard of.

Does it say somewhere that the one who wins the rookie scoring
must win the calder trophy?

last season Matias Maccelli was the best rookie, but Beniers won the rookie scoring,
thus won the Calder, going to this season, from the rookies of last season,
Maccelli has most points, proving he indeed was the best rookie (he had the highest ppg
and most assists last season)

Even if this happened Bedard is still winning the Calder and also it isn't going to happen, small sample size with stank having a 4 point game last night.

Maybe they'll throw another Makarov type of rule after this season?
- you have to be this age to compete from Calder vs one player cannot be named rookie of the year twice

"Eligibility: To be eligible for the Calder Memorial Trophy, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. Beginning in 1990-91, a player must not have attained his 26th birthday by Sept."

As of today that's it, as far as eligibilty rules.

Stank isn't going to win the Calder this year by playing 24 games, people thinking otherwise are simply not looking at it clearly.

Yeah I wouldn't bet on it either.

Still going to be fun to see how much of a dent he might put in that race though.

Most likely it'll still be Bedard or Faber's to lose.

I'm not sure there is a technical rule against that happening....meaning he'd be eligible for votes both this year and next year, however, there is 0.00% chance he wins the award only playing 24 games this year, there is simply no chance of it happening. I wouldn't go as far as to say games missed hurts this award the same way that it does the Hart, but no one is winning any end of season award by playing only 24 games.

Voronkov, having just scored his 17th goal, is now tied with Bedard for most goals by a rookie this season.

I'm not saying anything, I'm just saying. :naughty:

Bedard got 2 goals on Sunday so he now has 19. He's up to 0.90 ppg. Oh, and he has had 3 goals overturned due to offside reviews - with the total distance offside from all 3 calls being 4 or 5 inches. :ha:

5 years older, way less points in way more games.....he's got no chance at all if things keep going the way they are going.

Nedeljkovic was a Calder finalist in 2020-21 and was still Calder eligible in 2021-22, even getting one 5th place vote.

Seems like it's possible.
It's interesting, the rule about playing 6 or more games in each of the preceding 2 seasons in any major professional league seems to apply to no league other than the NHL...which is strange as Gretzky was disqualified by playing in the WHL, but that rule wouldn't have applied to him as he only played 1 year....so why does that rule even exist anymore if there is no other league where it applies? I guess it applies if someone plays more than 6 games in the NHL for 2 years prior, but that's NHL, not "major professional league" like it's open to applying to other leagues.

I think you're taking my particpation in this thread a teensy bit more seriously than intended. :)
Hey....I haven't participated much really....66 pages and I only had 2 comments I think.....I think Bedard is clearly winning it, but I don't care enough to read through that many pages.

Hard for me to vote for anyone but Ersson of the Flyers, when it comes to a rookie making a positive difference for their team.

One could argue Voronkov is more impactful this season,

7 more games than Bedard and still far back in points. We being serious?

(Yes I'm mostly joking and I know Chicago is significantly worse on paper)

What do you mean by 'on paper'?

Are you his brother or something? What a random choice.
