The Race for the Calder Trophy

Points is a byproduct of usage/minutes so it's not all that surprising, really.
Son of bitch! I knew that coach never liked me. If only he had let me play a few more minutes a game I'm sure I could have broken Gretzky's peewee scoring record. More minutes more goals. It's so logical. That's all that was holding me back.

Has Faber ever played anywhere close to how much he's currently playing? Might just be the load setting in.
He's still playing well. There was an article this summer where he said he was focussed on preparing for a full NHL season, as he was hyper aware that it would be a grind. While it's tough for any rookie, Faber's being 3 years older than Bedard would make if more likely that he would be the one who would be able to withstand the rigours of the season, even though no one anticipated him averaging over 25 minutes per night....that's crazy, IMO, for a rookie.

While the points streak he was on was fun, his main value is not as a purely offensive Dman, but a two way D with an emphasis on defense. That's why all this talk about how many points he is scoring compared to Bedard strikes me as odd. Think Spurgeon with another 5" and 30 lbs. Just smart, all round play.

The season isn't over yet, but unless Bedard makes a crazy run propelling the team to win some games then I don't see how he can win over Faber unless the latter gets injured. A guy who stays on the ice while playing top pairing minutes has to gain consideration over a guy who is injured.

FWIW, i think Bedard is amazing, and is going to be a great player. The things he can do already playing with guys like Donato and Foligno(good player in his day, but on his last legs, and was never a top offensive guy) as a smaller, not fast, 18 yo, is incredible. His shot, and especially his brain, are elite. It will be great to watch him in the years to come. Winning the Calder is a nothingburger... Bobby Hull didn't win it, either. Bedard will lead CHI to some great years, if they surround him with decent talent.

From what I've seen from various "experts", Bedard is still considered the favorite and ahead of Faber on most voters lists, so it will have to be the opposite.

Sure, but not to the point where a rookie putting up those numbers while playing with literal trash bags next to him isn't impressive.
Sure, same way previous other rookies have impressed on bad teams. Don't think he's been any better then your typical Calder contending forwards. Meanwhile, I think Faber has been better than your typical D-man Calder contender, for example better than Mo Seider in 21-22 or atleast on par.

There's being on a bad team, and then there's having Nick Foligno and Philipp Kurashev as your most common linemates while being a 1C.

Bedard hasn't hit a wall. Honestly this has been his best stretch the entire year. Regardless of the numbers.
Last night was a great example. Bedard walking Avs players all night while the rest of his team struggles to put one foot in front of the other.

Bedard has been by far the most impactful rookie...Faber's been very impressive, but there's a difference between being a good defenseman within a decent team (Wild have been a decent team for a while now this season) and being far and away your team's best and most relied upon player, literally dragging them to produce any offense whatsoever.

Yeah I thought he was really good against the Avs.

Yeah Faber has been great too.

Faber has been the best rookie, and this isn't exactly close either, but there's no universe in which the NHL lets someone other than Bedard get close to the Calder.

A lot of people define how good a player is by their complete impact, not just O-zone impact.
Sure but Calder voters don't really do that.

Even if they did they would look at the team situation and Faber in Chicago wouldn't look nearly as good while Bedard in Minny with that PP probably has 70 points by now.

Coming from the US junior teams and college, no, and it shows. He's looked worn out for weeks, and he's probably dealing with an injury too. And he's not a very big guy either, so physically he's just getting outmuscled sometimes. His defensive game has not rebounded since it eroded in late December, and his offense has returned to pedestrian levels. It really looks like his coaches ran him into the ground during the stretch in December when injuries decimated our defense. Was fun watching him break ice time records then, but it looks like a short-sighted decision now.

Faber has 1pt in his last 8 games, despite one of those games being a 10 goal win. He's absolutely hit a wall offensively and with it, probably loses his chance at taking the Calder (outside of another injury to Bedard).

Just one Wild fan's opinion but Faber definitely looks tired or has a nagging injury. He was not at practice yesterday so I am not sure what it is. He has still made some phenomenal defensive plays and has been pretty good defensively overall (respective to the team which has had a few games of 6-10 goals scored against), but he was looking ridiculous all over the ice there for awhile.

I for one think that, with all this upset and controversy over Bedard versus Faber going back and forth over and over, one should just opt for the compromise candidate and back Voronkov. :thumbu:

One could argue Voronkov is more impactful this season, how many more wins did having Bedard help the Blackhawks get?

(Yes I'm mostly joking and I know Chicago is significantly worse on paper)

Maybe he's just tired? He plays an awful lot each night and prior to this year the most games he's played in a season was 40. He's at 60 now and counting
