The Race for the Calder Trophy

Kind of weird that some of the popular apps like the score or nhl don’t have rookie leaders as a stat.

H-R has debuts for this season so obviously all rookies...problem with it is it doesn't include someone like luke hughes (and others) who are still considered rookies

Rossi is realistically not going to be in the conversation. He is used very differently and right now plays on the 4th line because the Wild need to get their veterans going somehow and Rossi also "works" on the 4th line. If he gets a nod in the final 3 that would already be a huge success. But there is no buzz, no flash around his name so even that is doubtful. Not even the Wild are talking much about his game as good as it is.

He was playing 2C a couple games ago and he's getting some time on the PP - PLUS - he has 17 goals and 33 points which indicates he's not some 4th line afterthought.

You completely missed what my post was about. Read again what I wrote and tell me where I pictured him as a 4th line afterthought. He played 2C and production has going down significantly which is ok since he is a rookie after all. Now he played 1.5 games in the 4th and scored 3 goals.

MN is relying a lot on PP1, there is barely any quality PP2 time. But that’s not the point. He is a great player but he will not win the Calder. Top 3 finish would be a crazy good achievement.

He lacks any amount of buzz since he just isn’t a flashy player at all. I would borderline call him boring to watch because all he does is plug holes, support the puck carrier and win an obscene amount of board battles against guys bigger than him. He would have a lot more points on the year if the guy that kept offensive plays alive would be awarded a point instead of the last two that touched the puck before a goal. Still wouldn’t win him the trophy

Brock Faber with zero points tonight. The guy has forgotten how to score. Tonight was his 5th game in a row that he failed to get on the score board.
To be fair, Bedard has gone pointless in two straight games, so a missed opportunity for him to really start pulling away points wise.

In a down year, I think Voronkov has a legitimate chance to win Calder, crazy how this kid is just an afterthought essentially at this point. IIRC he's one goal away from being tied with the goals among rookies while still being in the conversation for best rookie (outside of Bedard)

All while being on one of the worst teams in the league. I don't think there's a conversation to be had that he's better than Bedard, whose on a worse team. But when compared to the rest he belongs in the conversation. I can't wait to see what this kid does when he gets top line minutes and a competent team around him(or even coaching) as well as learning English a bit better.

30 pts in 51 games and a +6, which leads the team in +/- making him 1/3 who are actually on the positive side of things.

All of this while averaging the SECOND LEAST amount of TOI on the entire team.

VRONK!!!!!

Don't undersell him.

2.6 pts/60 with mostly PP2 time compared to Bedard 2.8 pts/60 with ultra favorable usage.

1.4 g/60 for VRONK to Bedard 1.2g/60.

And his play-driving metrics are better as well. He's been the total package.

Imagine if VRONK got the ice time he deserves. He should definitely end up a finalist for the Calder.

At 5v5, Voronkov has 2.53 p/60 vs Bedard's 2.27 p/60.

Faber has still been really good, even without the points he has been making great plays and been our best defenseman minus a Brodin game here or there. Some bad luck on deflections in the past month but he continues to play excellent, winning hockey in really hard minutes.

His recent skills on display have been his PP keep ins, he’s been really good at that this year, a noticeable improvement after a decade of Suter and Spurgeon there, just last game he had two really good ones that ended up leading to a goal. He has excellent hand eye coordination and anticipation.

Voronkov now has the highest xG per GP among all players this season with less than 100 career GP, including Bedard.
