The Race for the Calder Trophy

If Bedard was not injured yes he was near a point per game on probably the worst team in the league and was outscoring his next nearest opponent at the time of his injury by 11 points leading his team in scoring and still is, Faber has been great but plays with elite players as well if Bedard was not injured he would still be running away with it
Wilds D has been decimated by injuries. Brodin has missed half the season, Spurgeon most of it.

Coaches on playoff teams do care about the 140 feet that isn't the offensive zone, and Bedard has been terrible there. Evan compared to his team.(see Seguin getting benched by Bruins in playoffs)

I'm sure there are a handful that struggle to score that would take Bedard. Majority would take the 200 foot RHD putting up 50 points.

wonder how long it would have taken MIN to figure out Faber is THIS good if he was stuck playing 3rd pairing minutes this year and not forced to play PP, PK, and #1D ES minutes due to injuries. The Gophers didn't even know he could play a PP.
#FireMotzko?

He got the minutes an PK time right out of the gate.

The PP time? 6 years ...

i know fanbases who thrive off bragging about their awesome players even when their team sucks balls so there have to be quite a few ppl who prefer a guy who scores a lot vs the guy who shuts everyone down. edit: obviously all i have to live for this season is bragging about how great Faber is, for instance.

Would you rather have a player that scores 2 goals but gives up 3 or a player that scores 0 goals and prevents three?
So right now if you had the choice of Bedard or Faber and you're an NHL GM you'd take Faber?

It's Obvious Bedard is the best of all the rookie class , but should not get rewarded for being injured , if Faber keeps it up and ends with 50 points as a rookie dman you wold have to give it to him unless Bedard tears it up when he gets back
This is the right answer. All you guys that think you sound smart talking like Faber is the more valuable piece aren't as intelligent as you think you are.

Going forward, yes I agree I would probably rather have Bedard. But going into the playoffs this year? Faber for sure.

You need some additional parameters on the question since the discussion is regarding the Calder, so, yes, if I am trying to win this year, right now, I'd definitely consider it. Faber has played in the PO, is more physically mature, has played tougher minutes playing a more difficult position this year, and has put up points.

Since you disagree, perhaps you can provide some reasoning as to why as opposed to making a fairly simple-minded generalization that "anyone who considers Faber is not intelligent".

When did value become a prerequisite for winning the Calder?

So Panarin had more value then McDavid?

I said TWO years ago, not four years ago.

Im talking about Seider (defenseman) beating out Zegras (center) even though he scored fewer points.
Okay my bad but it's still the exception but there are some big differences still as Zegras along with 3 other rookies scored 23 points and another guy scored 24.

Zegras also wasn't the points leader on his team either.

Like I said upthread the Calder is going to Bedard unless he losses it.

There are other examples, including Ekblad winning over Stone and Gaudreau even though they had more points.

Zegras was the 2nd leading scorer on a team with better players. Thats more impressive than being the leading scorer on a team full of scrubs.

The fact is that points dont tell the whole story when comparing forwards and defensemen. As a rookie, Faber is top 10 in the NHL in TOI and top 20 among defensemenin scoring.. He's the #1D on the Wild and playing on PP1 and PK1. That is the more impressive resume.

Probably? Come on.

Who would you rather have in the playoffs THIS year? Because who you would rather have going forward is irrelevant to Calder discussion. Agreed?

I wasn't questioning that, he said probably thats who he would choose long term.

Scoring goals is the hardest thing to do. I think it's a healthy debate. Bedard's development will be fast and furious. Faber is having a great season. But i don't think anyone should expect this type of offense to be a regular occurrence. He has no history of this type of production.

I have no dog in this fight. Not a fan of either team.

Again, irrelevant to the discussion. The Calder isnt awarded on history or projecting into the future, its only about that particular season. The only reason the Wild have an outside shot at getting into the playoffs is because Faber has been holding things down.

To be clear, I dont think the Wild will make the playoffs, but if Faber wasnt playing as well as he has, they might be even lower in the standings than they are. Hes helping them win games.

Think we've lost the plot here guys. Talking about their development or who's better long term, this is the Calder thread, the only question here is who's performing better this season.

As of February 11th, 2024, it's Brock Faber.

Only because Bedard isn't playing. He'll be back soon and then Bedard will be the answer to your question. Faber gets the silver medal in the Calder competition.

Let me guess, your sole metric is points scored

No.. my metric is one is very likely a generational player with a skill level that very few hockey players have and the other is just an excellent dman with a skill level that many top dmen have.

So your metric is one entirely irrelevant to the trophy itself?

What does "very likely generational" have to do with this season? How did that work out for McDavid his rookie year?

The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League."
Seems fair to me that a player who is on his way to proving he's a generational player meets that requirement. An extraordinary, nay... generational, high skill level and PPG just confirms that.

I ask again, how did that work out for McDavid?
