The Race for the Calder Trophy

Hopefully Fantilli breaks out of this cold streak after two points last night in Calgary. One was an empty netter.

13 points in December and just increased his January total to 4.

Hawks have scored 0 or 1 in seven of the 11 games that Bedard has missed.

They've scored a total of 13 goals in the last 11 games.
That’s just because the Blackhawks have just really buckled down defensively…. Not because Bedard was by far and away the most important player in their offence.

Looking like it is Faber's to lose. Fantilli may be missing some time due to his injury.

Shame to see the Calder race diminished due to injuries. It has been a fun season with a lot of standout rookie performances.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for all, as it is great to have fantastic young talent firing across the league.

8 weeks,,, yaiks

Really does suck that this epidemic of injuries is happening. It's one hell of a rookie class and i think these guys are going to be compared to one another off and on for years to come.

Bedard will still win easily. Not many others have stepped up to take over since he was hurt. Yes Faber is having an outstanding season and will be a finalist, but the award will still be Bedards by the end of the season. He will tear it up again once he comes back from injury

1 A for Faber on first game back from the break.
And played 28 minutes. It was interesting hearing Chelios talking about him, and how he thought that playing college hockey really helps dmen develop. He also commented about Faber, "He doesn't make mistakes out there."

While it's not totally true - every dman makes mistakes, just like every CB in football- the main point is that his decision making and physical ability to enact it is about as good as it can get for any dman, not just a rookie. The contrast between him and prime Dumba (circa 2018) is palpable. Dumba was fast, exciting, physical, hard shot, would jump up in the offense... but would make all sorts of bad pinches, giveaways, and was often out of position. Faber does none of that, or almost none.

He is 14th oa in ES TOI, but leads all those above him in SH TOI.

Unless he hits a wall in the last half of the season (which is possible considering the number of minutes he is logging), Faber is the current front runner for the Calder. What he is doing is more impressive than any other rookie (including Bedard before his injury).

He's currently 10th among ALL NHL defenseman (not just rookies) in TOI (24:55), only 5 fewer seconds than Makar and one minute less per game than the leader Drew Doughty, and logs more ice time than players like Josi, Hedman, McAvoy and Q. Hughes among others.. He's also in the top 18 in scoring among ALL NHL defensemen, within just 3 points of McAvoy (who Faber styles his game after).

Bedard is an impressive rookie, no doubt. But what Faber is doing in a more difficult position for rookies to succeed in, has been much more impressive, IMO.

I agree, but Faber isn't 18 like Bedard. I think the 3 years age difference plays some part in how Calder voters will evaluate who's more deserving.

Same age, it would be edge to Faber. Pre-injury, it was going to Bedard. The injury to Bedard will make it interesting now.

Different positions. I think it's more impressive what Faber is doing as a 21 year old playing 1D than an 18 year old playing forward. Much more responsibility playing on the blueline and being productive both offensively and defensively.

Bedard was injured 3 minutes into his 39th game. He had scored 33 points up until that point for a 0.87 ppg. The timetable for his return was set at 6-8 weeks after the operation to repair his broken jaw. If he returns in 6 weeks - that will be 2/19 which would mean he will have 27 games left. If his return is 8 weeks - that will be 3/4 which would mean he will have 21 games left. If he scores at the ppg rate he did before the injury he will end up with somewhere between 51 and 56 points.

Faber has 30 points in 50 games which is a 0.60 ppg. If he plays the remaining 32 games and continues scoring at 0.60 ppg - he will end up with 49 points.

I'm surprised Bedard is still in the running for Calder after missing 6-8 weeks.

I realize this dead horse has already been beat to a pulp, several times, but I think you're not impressed enough with what Bedard has done playing with a team of 4th and 5th liners. That's not taking anything away from Faber who has been very good playing with pretty good players.

Yes, and outside of Kaprizov, you can make the argument that Faber has been the MVP of the team you claim has "pretty good players". In other words, he hasnt been riding anyone's coattails either.

I still say it is Bedard until someone else can prove it won't be. Fantilli got hurt too. Bedard still has a lead in the rookie scoring race 33-30 despite not playing since January 5th. This is not the strongest rookie race out there. I do see a lot of good players in the future but there usually is a couple 22 year olds that are better than the 18-19 year olds in the NHL that make the Calder race more interesting, but there isn't that this year. So really, it is still Bedard's to lose. If he comes back in a month he might be 5 points behind, that's it.
