The Race for the Calder Trophy

Honestly a good forward can have mediocre defensive metrics and still win. But a good defensive defenseman can have mediocre offensive stats and not even be considered. And yet if a defenseman prevents two goals and scores none while a forward score one goal and let's two in the forward is still considered the better player.
rlly makes u think

With Bedard out another 6 weeks, feels like this is probably Faber's to lose, unless he slows down like crazy.

Rossi’s pace hasn’t really dipped either but Faber has 15 points in 18 games since taking over PP1 duties
Goes to show how much usage affects point totals. I think the Wild were content to have him be a defensive Dman, but when Addison was traded, and Spurgeon(for the year) and Brodin got injured, Faber just fell into the #1PP(he didn't play PP in college), and ran with it. He's not the second coming of Al MacInnis, but he makes smart decisions with the puck, and has a quick release when he decides to shoot, so the puck gets through.

The points that Faber is getting are nice, but going forward in his career I don't see him being the next Hughes, Karlsson, or Carlson. Ideally more of a Slavin, though McAvoy is the guy I keep coming back to as a visual match. Pretty heady comparisons for a guy in his first year.

With Bedard out for 6 more weeks, it looks like the remaining favorites (at the moment) are Faber, Rossi, Hughes and Fantilli.

This is a really great rookie class and shows that good players can arrive at different times. Rossi's had a bit of a long and winding road but he's showing that development is not linear. Each team with at least one of the better players should be thrilled. There are also some under the radar guys playing well who just don't have the number of games to give them enough numbers to compete with the top guys. As posted above, Zary has had a nice season, as has Voronkov, and Carlsson, and Nemec as well. If they had full seasons to date they'd be right there is the conversation with the bigger names.

Carlsson is certainly a guy i have my eye on. i like the way they have brought him along slowly, rather than have him take on a heavy workload and expect him to carry the team.

I guess Anaheim has some ability to shelter him as needed with McTavish and Henrique and Strome and maybe even Zegras. Long term he's going to be an excellent player. It's fun to see the league become more skilled and faster.

I think it will be pretty tough to a forward not named Bedard to win it, so long as he does come back in the next 6 weeks.

Right now it's Faber's to lose IMO. Hughes could close the gap if he (and the rest of the team) picks it up again. Devils have been crippled by injuries.

Just an FYI, Bedard isn't set to be out an additional six weeks. The 'six weeks' were in reference to when he got injured/had the surgery. So he's already 2 or 3 weeks into that six weeks.

He could realistically be back within a week or two after the break is over.

It was announced as 6-8 weeks after the surgery on Jan 10. Richardson's comments from last night make it sound like it's going to be closer to the long end of that estimate of 8 weeks.

After the loss, Richardson reiterated Bedard isn't close to returning.

"It was 6-8 weeks at the beginning was what was said so like I don't know; you're never going to know, but talk to me in a month,” he said. “He's not going to be the back by then. There's no change; it’s the same so I don't know, six weeks from the start or from now, it's still in between the timeline.

Everyone, including the media, has considered it about six weeks ever since it was announced that he had surgery. I don't remember if the release said 6-8, but even if it did, people generally are viewing it on the lighter side of that. I'd say Richardson throwing out the possibility of 8 weeks yesterday was him trying to reign in expectations a bit, rather than actually expecting it to be that long.

I'd be shocked if he's not back by the end of February. I wouldn't doubt he's back sometime mid February.

Edit:

Time for him to enter the chat.

3rd in points amongst rookies. Bedard's injury might give him a chance.. should at least be a nominee.

Tremendous player, didn't expect to see offensive upside like this so quickly

Plenty of (well deserved) love for Brock in here:

Faber entered the chat months ago lol. He's the best all around rookie in the league. That doesn't make Bedard's performance any less impressive, but Bedard has a significant age & maturity disadvantage. It's hard to win the Calder as a true 18 year old, especially when you're a smaller guy on a terrible team. It's only been done 3 times in the last 43 years (ironically enough, they happened in a 4 year span, with Skinner, Mackinnon, and Ekblad). Mackinnon and Ekblad were already built like men (and Stone or Gaudreau were more deserving than Ekblad), and Skinner played with a fair amount of offensive support.

If I had to take a rookie into the playoffs, I am taking Faber.

Here to make sure Ridly Greig get's some love... but even if Bedard were healthy and finished at a point per game, I'd still give it to Faber. They never factor in how much harder it is to play defence in this league at that young of an age, and this kid is absolutely killing it.

Definitely Faber's to lose at this point.

I assume it's a good problem to have when I can't tell if this post is referring to Faber or Rossi.

A couple of articles came out today specific to the Calder from different writers at the Athletic:

Calder Trophy midseason ranking: Can Brock Faber challenge Connor Bedard for No. 1?

Calder Trophy watch: Ranking the 10 best rookies of the 2023-24 season at the halfway mark

And from Russo and Smith specific to Faber:

As Brock Faber's stellar play continues for Wild, the Calder Trophy door opens — 'if not the Norris'

As Brock Faber's stellar play continues for Wild, the Calder Trophy door opens — 'if not the Norris'

My commentary, the Norris isn’t happening anytime soon for Faber and is hyperbole, though by metrics he is right up at the top of the league for defensive contributions. I can see a purist defensive argument supporting that stance but he isn’t going to get any mainstream attention for that this early into his career when it comes to Norris contention. Super fun to watch and highly proficient, league wide accolades would be great but not necessary to appreciate Faber’s play.
