The Race for the Calder Trophy

I honestly don't know much about him--is Kurashev better than hartman before hartman started to produce on the Wild or better in general--i don't think anyone would know who hartman was if he didn't get first line C duties alongside an elite wing
Hartman was a first round pick. Was a fine player in Chicago. Got traded for another first rounder. People know him.

I think it just let players like Hughes, Faber, Fanitilli, and Rossi back into the race. There is a gap there which will probably be gone and then some by the time he gets back. I would probably still put him winning the Calder at 50/50 when it was like 90/10 before the injury.
i think he can return well enough to pace for the same points and his points per game will be good enough to make him the frontrunner still. unless one of those guys behind him explode in the meantime

McDavid wasn't mcdavid in his first season either. Just saying.
His ability to create offense single handily with his speed and hands is only matched by MacK and he’s got 100x the hockey brain of MacK. I’m not sure Bedard will ever be that guy due to his skating not being at that level.

Crosby scored 100 points playing with not very good players. McDavid had chemistry problems in his first season and still was a PPG player in a very low scoring season.
Mark Reechi, Sergei Gonchar, John LeClair, Zigmund Palffy, Colby Armstrong, Ryan whitney, Mario Lemieux were all better players than anyone Bedard has played with

you know him because he was a CHI first rounder. i think he was trending "disappointing", his roles were diminishing steadily after his first season.

Yes, and Bedard will only learn and get better in his own way. Not saying he will be McDavid or anything, but McDavid has grown since his 18yo season quite a bit.

He's on pace for 31 goals 69 points while being one of the worst defensive players in the league. That's far from generational.
Agreed. This year's pace doesnt put him in the generational category. Perhaps he will ramp up though.

I mean Jagr gets some serious respect as an all time great and his first couple of seasons weren't anything mind blowing.

Guess it depends on your definition of generational too. I'm not sure if there is another hockey term that is more poorly defined.

His first full season in the NHL he scored 19 goals.

I mean generational or not really doesn’t matter. But it’s really hard to evaluate how good he is on a roster this bad and injured.

He will be getting compared to Crosby/Ovechkin/McDavid.

Only Ovechkin had a worse supporting cast. He had a more successful season but was also a draft +2 in his rookie year.

Due to that I'll give Bedard a pass this year but I would expect to see big improvement next year regardless of his team situation if Bedard wants to stay in the generational talk.

He’s been stapled to a guy with a career high of 25 points in a higher scoring era. I think people really are underestimating just how bad this truly is.

But yeah obviously with anything time will tell how good.

I think it's broken teeth for Bedard... gonna be a very tough dentist visit but he'll be fine (sucks for the "having all your real teeth" brag is gonna be gone though but thats hockey) If it's a broken jaw, this Calder race just became wide open cuz he'll be out a while if it's that.

Looks like I called it. f***ing brutal. Basically got the Calder stripped away from him just like McDavid.

Okay, now you're just being delusional.

Kane was the single most important player for those 3 runs combined, could argue Keith too. But even if you say Keith was the most important, it wasn't "Nowhere near"

Really? You think Kane's impact on those 3 runs happens in a vacuum? Kane did what he did because defensive play and solid breakouts etc allowed him to. Team defense kept them in quite a few games during that run. Crawford playing out of his mind....etc. You cannot offense your way to a championship and Patty Cakes can't play defense to save his life. I stand by what I said.

With Bedard going down, the race is open again, but really only for a handful of guys around the top 5.

Only question that remains is who is gonna seize the opportunity!?

Bedard would have to miss an extended period of time for this thing to get close

He obviously has no chance in Hell of winning the award but I hope Benson at least gets a few votes as at 18 he has arguably been our most effective forward this season. He is likely going to end up the "how did so many teams pass on this guy" from the 23 draft.
