By my estimate the 2 assists tonight move him into a tie with Zary for 5th in EVP among rookies at 14. Voronkov at 15, Fantilli and Rossi at 17, Bedard at 19. Pretty good for a guy whose defense laps everyone on the list.

Fantilli at 19 points.

They took an assist away on Hartman's goal.

Bedard would have 45 points playing with Kaprizov and Zuc.
I watched tonight's game and it's amazing how much better he is than everyone else on the Hawks. And, as I said elsewhere, I know he has to pay his dues, but Colorado hooked the kid throughout the game. Hopefully that starts getting called.

If we really wanted to give a calder to anyone really deserving, its really down to Faber-Fantilli-Bedard

However, I can completely see the NHL snub Faber and his near insane 30 minutes a night average for Carlsson, who is just as good but just becomes a case where goal scorer is seen as better over an actual valuable defenseman.

Shame that Mintyukov kinda fell off but he's a good defenseman. I like what he's done so far in Anaheim. More deserving than Leo but just as good.

Defensive play doesn't even matter in the award for the best defenseman in the league.

Faber doesn't have a chance to win because he's not producing points at a similar level

Faber would still be better. He’s playing 30 minutes a night like he’s prime Suter. Faber is so damn good.
It. Doesn't. Matter.

You have a rookie forward playing at a PPG pace while dragging his entire team behind him. Faber doesn't have a chance in hell, no matter how many minutes he's playing unless he's scoring 50+ points.

The team as a whole around Faber is way ahead of what a Bedard has around him, it's not even close.

I realize that the Calder has basically become a "who scores the most points as a rookie" award. And because of this, Bedard will probably win it. But the official definition is that is should be given "to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL".

Oxford defines "proficient" as "competent or skilled in doing or using something"?

Is Bedard more "proficient" than Faber is? I think that's up for debate when you look at the totality of their games thus far.

Bedard is also the focal point of every team that they face, Faber isn't.

You are very much overrating this current Wild team, they have been extremely injured this year, they are playing below the cap floor right now because of those injuries, rostering less than $50MM.

Kaprizov has been the worst player on his line all season, while recovering off of major leg surgery. Eriksson Ek and Rossi are the only two forwards that have been healthy and consistent contributors. After them it’s maybe dewar or Duhaime.

The Hawks have had as much or more talent on their roster, but they don’t play any kind of coherent NHL system or play with the same effort level as the Wild’s depth guys.

Faber is a defenseman, his role is to shutdown the oppositions best, he has been the matchup defender all season for the Wild even with Brodin and Spurgeon on the ice once in a while.

The Hawks roster is a completely stripped down to tank roster being led by a country mile by an 18 yr old rookie.

Kaprizov is a bonafide superstar, this "worst player on his line" is still nearly a PPG.... With another PPG player on his line.

Bedard has 13 more points than anyone else on his line with an even worse defense and goalie behind him. As bad as Minnesota might be, Chicagos roster is literally designed to be terrible..

Kaprizov this season is a demonstration of why pure counting stats like he and Bedard are putting up really don’t mean that much and are much more a product of a base skill level combined with force fed opportunities. Bedard is very skilled, no one in here is questioning that. Is he utilizing his skills in a way conducive to winning hockey games? That’s where some people have questions.

....Faber's job is to shut down the best players on the opposing side on a nightly basis, while also quarterbacking the top PP and on the top PK unit.
Minnesota has other superstars to focus on. Teams are focused on established players such as Kaprizov and Zuc. Chicago literally has nobody else worth focusing on.

I'm not saying Faber isn't good or worthy, but the reality of the Calder trophy is that unless he's producing points in those minutes it's not going to matter. It doesn't even matter for Norris trophy either. I'm not saying it's right. I'm saying the reality of the award is that if Faber is producing at a significant rate offensively to go along with everything else that he's doing, he's not going to win the Calder.

Once again, I'm not saying it's fair, but the reality is both the Norris and Calder is a scoring competition, no matter how it's worded by the NHL.

See above.
