I am throwing my hat in the ring.

Art Jr., I will work for cheap and promise to not have a play design go more than five yards.

What are my chances?
What is the history of the Jet Sweep and how many types of Jet Sweeps can your Offesne run?

I am putting my playbook together right now.

Let me get back to you.

Earlier in the year I was throwing around the idea of Mike McCarthy as a candidate for OC if the Cowboys stunk, due to his connections to the city of Pittsburgh. Seems like that's a pipe dream unless Jerry does something rash (although I wouldn't put it past him). He'd probably have HC offers anyway even if he does get fired.

Leftwich? Meh. Although it seemed as if he functioned as a semi-OC during his second stint with us as Ben's backup. Again, this organization seems to have a fetish with the "Standard", whatever that means now, so he's probably in consideration.

I'm probably going to take Tomlin at his word that he's not looking outside the organization right now. Faulkner/Sullivan will get their opportunity but we'd have to see a drastic turnaround for the offense for them to even be in consideration in 2024.

Getting some 34 year old McVay/Shanahan disciple would be neat, but that's not really our MO. Thoughts on Ken Dorsey? Trubisky has that connection with him from when he was in Buffalo.

I’m guessing they’ll take another look at Pep Hamilton. He was one of the outside interviews last time and would fit the uninspired hiring that I’m kind of expecting

Dorsey or Gruden are my preferred people
But again, Tomlin won't let anyone that is FOOTBALL smarter than him enter his sacred coaching circle

Partially.

But mostly it is that the primary driving force behind the philosophy of defense first and every offensive play being a run, or a pass that is no more than basically a run, as a winning strategy is Tomlin.

So, would he ever hire an OC who would design plays to stretch the field? Or change much at all and have an offense that resembles the current NFL?

I doubt it.

I again hope that he proves me wrong. But Tomlin has never admitted that he was wrong about anything, nor has he made adjustments except very minor ones. He no longer has the team run the ball out of the end zone every single time for instance. Baby steps. I expect similar here.

I mean, he did hire (well, promote) Arians, who was the most downfield passing OC you'll ever see.

Cower brought him here when both worked for the Chiefs. So, Tomlin inherited him.

Tomlin did allow him to run a much different offense. But that was then. It has been seven years of Fichtner and Canada.

That is the better part of a decade.

Those are not glitches and errors in the system. That is the system.

And Arians was a very long time ago. With time, Tomlin has gone to a more conservative approach. I'd also argue the reason Arians was "let go" was due to Tomlin not sharing the same philosophy.

Also note that Arians was more of a branch of the Cowher tree vs Tomlin

I don't disagree with most of this, although I think the biggest reason Arians was "retired" was because Ben was taking a ton of hits due to the downfield passing approach. Yes, Cowher is who brought him in as a QB coach but he became OC under Tomlin because Whisenhunt left.

And yes, it was a long time ago. They haven't had a non-puppet since Ben got Haley fired, and it's been walking down the hall and doing next man up ever since.

Apparently Rooney also had a pretty big role in Arians being let go and Haley being brought in.

It’s so hard to actually sort through what’s true and not. If we’re to believe the media, when it comes to OCs under Tomlin, Rooney:

1.) Made the final say on Arians
2.) Had a hand in Haley being hired
3.) Had a hand in Canada being hired as QB coach
4.) Made the decision to fire Canada

I would be very surprised if he doesn’t have a massive say in who the next OC is if all this is true.

We don't know the strength of anybody on this Offense. (except for Pickens)

TBH... the QB and RB coach don't seem that impressive either but whatever. Someone said it above (Tomlin alone should not pick staff)... but I doubt they get a high quality OC anyway, not many young OC (up and coming football minds) have been lining up to work with Tomlin in the last few years.

...some Tomlin lackey asked about Offensive Lineman trades...
According to the folks over at Pro Football Focus, Dotson is the highest-graded guard in the NFL this season with an 85.3 grade. Meanwhile, for the Steelers, his replacement Isaac Seumalo has a 63.8 grade

the other guy was a starter for the Texans and was doing really well too until he blew his knee out.

Like I said, Offensive staff needs a complete reboot (I doubt Seumalo is bad but I'm 100% his couching staff is) but you will have to fire Tomlin to get new good coaches. Tomlin will hire someone who will be a lifer/average because that's who this team is.

They need to shit can Austin. He's thanking Matt Canada this season because that unit is SEVERELY underperforming until his direction. The offense is taking heat off of him.

Well you know the connection Todd has with the Steelers, right?

They need to shit can all of them (coaching staff) starting with Tomlin but it ain't happening. It was crazy watching the Browns Offensive plan of 5 yard passes not getting countered the entire game. Funny as hell....

BTW... watched a full Philly game for the first time and god damn. Hopefully, this team will look like Philly one day. Just well coached- can play all types of games... low scoring to high.

We are just a shitty product on the field except for a few of our individual Players- Porter and Watt are cooking.
