If that happens I hope that the Steelers are honest in their self assessment and know this ain't a one year rebuild.

And actually take the best player available.

At the moment, I feel like if you miss out on that top tranche of OTs and CBs, it's so tight that the BPA is basically going to be the guy you can develop best.

And it's really going to favour a trade down if possible.

I wish we were in the 2000's where we were taking BPA because Lukas Van Ness if he could sit for a year or two and develop would be a game changing defensive end in a 3-4. Same thing with Keion White.

What on earth makes you think their draft philosophy has changed since the 2000s

White is already 24 you can’t redshirt him

I completely agree. I understand thinking you have your QB and he’s on a rookie deal but the best thing that could happen for the Steelers at 17 is getting a superstar regardless of position (maybe exclude RB).

Are there positions I’d prefer a star at? Yes.

But all things equal- a superstar even EDGE at or WR is going to make this team better than a capable player at OT or DL.

Obviously I want a tackle or corner to fall (or Tyree Wilson) but if not I’ve started to like JSN if you’re not gonna move back. Can really see him as a QB’s best friend. He’s super sudden and separates so well. Maybe he doesn’t hit a ton of home runs in the NFL but I think he’s gonna help a team convert on a lot of 3rd downs and could see him stuffing a stat sheet. Wouldn’t be a bad pick for a young QB imo. I don’t know if he’s going to be there though.

I agree with your point. Can really make a case for anyone; like if you think Mayer is an All-Pro for 10 years he’s a justifiable pick at 17. Just be right.

I'm aware. I was talking about Van Ness. Just stating how ridiculous White's measurables are.

Though this has nothing to do with my point...because someone else is running their draft and it has already been stated how their philosophy has changed? Weidl and Colbert rank prospects completely differently.

My point was in the 2000's we would be able to draft a guy in the 1st round and give him a year to get up to speed. We need the guys we draft with our first 3 picks to be contributors immediately.

Tyree WIlson really has the feel of a guy who could be the next big deal in the league. His length is unbelievable.

Amen.

I'm really intrigued by JSN too. He reads like Diontae Johnson but with some size. I'd be happy with him at 17, although I've got to admit that if I was in charge of designing the Steelers' offence right now, I'd be looking at 2 TE sets, and getting 2 WRs that can really threaten defences deep, either thanks to combat catch ability or just burning the hell out of people. I figure if you do a lot of 2 TEs and have a strong run game, then a possession catcher is less of a deal and what you need are deep threats to stop people just stacking the box.

So I'd probably look more at Mayer at 17 if going that route.

I think if they're being honest with themselves, they can afford minimal contributions from some of those guys. They've got a shot at the playoffs without making a pick, but I don't think any picks are getting them to the superbowl unless Pickett takes a big leap.

I say that while thinking about Anton Harrison in particular, who sounds like he'd be a top 10 pick next year if he'd returned to college and built his strength, but it possibly available at 32 this year. Getting Mazi Smith a new set of pass rusher moves might fall under that too.

No we don’t we don’t need anything day one from our first for 3 picks. They have starters at every position they are comfortable with going into next season.
They draft a OT he is going to be the swing guy Moore and chuks will start week 1. They draft a cb Wallace Witherspoon and Petterson will start over him. They always draft with the future in mind but never force them into playing.
You draft Van he is in the leal role until he puts on 20 pounds to get 290 they like in DE.

Yeah I think he’s basically what the Steelers dream up a 3-4 DE to look like height/weight/length wise. Maybe a little light but he looks huge.

I am participating in the mock draft in the football section and I traded up with NE and drafted Broderick Jones with the 14th pick. I traded 17 and 80.

Draft pick calculators stated that is fair value.

Should be interesting to see who is left at 32.

Do you plan on trading down from 32 to offset the drop off from 49 to 120

I have been a Jalen Carter fan, but I'm not so sure I would take him at this point in time. He basically mailed it in during the bowl game. He didn't participate in the combine at all. He showed up at his pro day out of shape and unable to finish. He is denying interviews to teams outside of the top 10. He has had multiple run ins with the law in Georgia where bodycam video has been released (speeding). His maturity has been questioned over and over.

I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable drafting him, giving him a pile of money, and him holding himself accountable to perform, stay conditioned, and stay out of trouble.

It’s going to be really interesting to see where he ends up. I’m guessing top 10 still since it seems like he got assurances from some team, but I can see reasons for a lot of teams to pass on him.

I definitely agree with this, especially considering this lockerroom doesn't have quite the veteran presence to keep that kinda nonsense in line.

I will look into it. I may look into trading back into the round 1 as well.

Cam Heyward doesn't have a veteran presence? Ogunjobi? TJ Watt? Minkah? Pat Pete? The defense has plenty of veteran presence.

That's my thought. The whole "no interviewing teams outside the top 10" came after visits to Chicago and Philadelphia. I dunno whether that was just when the news was released and he'd made up his mind before those visits, or it was those visits that made him say it, but it feels like a big coincidence if he didn't get assurances. Both make a ton of sense for him as a landing spot.

This is essentially the same vets who let JJ do his dumb ass Tik Tok routine and had AB literally quitting on his team for the last game of the year. It's also the same coaching regime who told rookie Najee Harris to "figure it out on his own" and we've had at least 3 former players asking to be released/traded.

So yea, I'm not sure this is the place for an immature player who needs some babysitting

These last two drafts are the most excited I’ve been in a while.
yup. nothing will top getting Big Ben though. I went into that draft hoping for that CB thinking their was a small chance of Rivers falling to us and then Big Ben falls right to us. LOL Browns 4eva

Dane Brugler released his NFL draft guide for anyone that has a subscription to the Athletic. To me, it’s the best draft resource out there for anyone interested in the draft.
