Spillane signed with the Raiders yesterday. . .

Bush is definitely not coming back.

Maybe Jack comes back at a lower salary, but I have my doubts.

They straight up nuked their ILBs.

Guess Kahn isn't f***ing around, but I assume he had Tomlin's blessing.

Zero splash plays from the MLB room easy to see why they would move on

I think Jack hasn't had or forced any turnovers in two years. Or had any sacks.

No picks. No FR. No FF. No sacks. In two years.

That seems almost impossible like DJ not catching a TD again next season.

Holcomb’s deal is 3 years for 18 million. That’s actually one of the richest linebacker contracts signed in FA so they must be pretty high on the guy.

It seems like he’s the direct Jack Replacement with Roberts being the direct Spillane replacement.

Jack wasn't anything special for the Steelers. PFF isn't law of course, but he only ranked at a 54 last year. That's really not good and not worth the money they were spending on him.

Never a fan of creating a need. ILB would've been an non-issue if Jack were kept. Now it's still on the table for the draft. In a draft without many good options. Meh.

Still think you go OT or DL at 17. Grab Addison if he's there at 32.

Just to throw it out, but here were the PFF rankings of the old LBs vs the new LBs:

Holcomb: 66.6
Roberts: 57.1

Bush: 58.8
Jack: 53.6
Spillane: 52.5

At least according to PFF, Holcomb is by far the best guy there, while the other 4 are mostly mediocre to poor. It seems like Holcomb is coming in as the main ILB.

If healthy is key.

He was an amazing athlete coming out of college, and Kentucky completely screwed up his development and technique by moving him all around on defense.

If healthy it would be great for both parties. Dupree on a prove it deal where he has, and can again, have success.

Don't see the issue in cutting Jack. He started bright but lost that edge when his injury problems started last season. Considering they seemed pretty persistent and he came in with an injury history, saving 8m by cutting him seems pretty prudent.

Does seem to create a need at ILB but see how the rest of FA goes. If anything, cutting Jack makes it more likely they address that, as I don't think they were bringing in Elandon unless they cut Jack and now they've got a bit more money.

I'm thinking they see Roberts as a starter to replace Bush. I don't know enough about him, but he sounds like a legit starter with his arrow pointing up (apparently had his best season last year). Sounds like he is lot better than Bush, but that doesn't take much:

His issues seem to be size and of course... take a wild guess... pass defense.

I always like guys who can tackle players using their teammates:

Their assessment of the position group must not have been too favorable, eh?

And I find it hard for them to gauge this group in terms of their run defense. The DLine in front of them was atrocious

But I'm not opposed to these changes. Maybe Flores gave them a scouting report on the dudes we let go and said they're easily replaceable. Hard to say

Robinson gonna beast it next year at ILB

Eh...in the run game sure.
I may be equal to his pass defense awareness and I'm 44 yrs old. He's that bad at it. He's shown only as a downhill LBer

Elandon Roberts is an interesting signing. I thought the Steelers would have interest in him last year with the Flores connection to Roberts in both Miami and New England before that but it didn't happen.

Last year Elandon Roberts posted 4.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss and 6 QB hits.

The group of Myles Jack, Devin Bush, Robert Spillane and Mark Robinson combined only produced 1 sack, 9 tackles for loss and 5 QB hits. This entire MLB core also produced zero interceptions, zero forced fumbles and zero fumble recoveries. I guess you can see why they are revamping that group this off-season

Back to the Oline:

We took a good guard who could block on the move and moved him to Center while tasking him almost exclusively to block in a phone booth.
We took a really good RG prospect in Dotson and played him at LG aside from one game in 2020.
We have a good LT prospect in Chuks playing RT.
We signed a great LG FA and immediately moved him to RG.

Somebody make it make sense.

Maybe Tomlin struggles with which way is left and right?

He may still have to make an L with each hand to remind himself which is which.

The problem with Dotson and Chuks isnt that they were switched side, its just that theyre not very good.

I felt like the line gelled the last half of the season, but I don’t trust the left side, especially Moore, not to get KP killed.

So it’s not like the line was a disaster or anything. They did some really good work down the stretch and the units arrow is definitely pointing up.

But that doesn’t mean you don’t try to improve them either.

I just feel like getting a legit LT will help make this unit one of the better ones in the league when healthy.

If they can find a guard to supplant Dotson also, even better.

Agree with most of what you said, but it seemed like it was a totally ass backwards way to arrive at a decent Oline.

ANd I still say that this offense is a stud LT away from moving from the bottom tier to middle tier.

Hartwig will push dotson. Daniels said he was most comfortable at RG. Moore struggled in camp at RT.
They want to build the o line to function within a zone scheme.
Moore is an average LT who they can win with because of the movement of Kp. I am sure they will draft someone just not sure its in the first 2 days. They will draft a C.

I wouldn’t call them bottom tier. Ya, at the beginning of the season they were, but with five guys who never played together and a new o-line coach struggles were inevitable.

After the bye week they became at worst a middle of the pack o-line, and I’d lay that fault mostly at the feet of the left side.

Consider before the bye they only rushed for 95 YPG and yielded 2.6 sacks per game. After the bye they had awesome improvement to 146 rushing and 1.8 sacks per game.

They went 7-2 during this surge in o-line play.

The right side is extremely good in pass protection and Daniels was a boss who only allowed 5 pressures all season.

Chuks only let up two sacks all season and was much better in the run game.

Cole was really steady and will just keep getting better I suspect.

The issue is the left side - Moore and Dotson are good in the run game, but poor pass blockers.

Dotson is just inconsistent as hell and a laundry machine, which is a big ass issue.

Moore… he’s really good in the run game, but hot garbage in pass protection. Especially against speed/bull rushers.

Moore let up ten pressures and seven sacks. That can’t happen again if they want KP healthy and to be a star.

Your LT for KP is his blindside and that’s exactly why they need to upgrade the position.

KP’s health should be their top priority, and having Moore protecting his blindside again is playing Russian roulette with KP’s longevity in this league.
