That was always a cover story, but it’s been widely rumored he was nudged into retirement.

He had already done the whole “I’ll resign if I have to fire my guys” routine after the 88 season, and then had the great purge anyway:

Funny how history repeats itself with this family:

Joe Walton incoming....

With ChaosAgent here. Think Herbig's maybe played 20 NFL centre snaps in his life and none at tackle. Possibly bad assessment of team needs to bring him in, but I don't blame him for not pushing his way past Daniels and Seumalo.
Daniels has played C, too. There was talk where he'd play when he first signed with the Steelers. I forget who, but I also heard somebody make the point this year if they would have kept Dotson and moved him to RG, they could have had Seumalo-Daniels-Dotson and been in a much better place.

Joe Walton incoming....

Frightening how history is repeating itself here.

Walton was brought in because Noll’s offense was so bad and predictable that Brister said “we might as well punt on first down”

Noll was stuck in the past running an outdated offense.

Walton was suppose to be the savior that came in with his modern O and got the Steelers back on top.

Yep…

If I remember correctly the offense didn't score a TD in the first four games of Walton's first season.

I *think* he was mainly a C in college and his first year, and took off after? And hasn't been one in a long time?

In any case, I'm really not a fan of messing with guys positions based on the last few years (although wasn't Daniels a LG at the Bears?)

I was just a kid back then, just have faint memories but was a NFL history buff so I read up on that era a bunch of times.

Waltons offense was a disaster though.

He and Sherman were probably the worst OCs in my lifetime until Canada came around.

Edit: Yep you nailed it::

I stand corrected on Cole, yikes. Thanks @xlm34.

After the absolute nightmare of moving Kendrick Greene I would really prefer that we just draft/sign a guy who played center last year. I'm very sensitive about snaps. Can't stand when bad snaps wreck plays and lead to turnover. This is dating back to end-career Pouncey who was awful at snapping the football.

Neither am I, but you know what I'm less a fan of? Cole's play this year.

If Herbig wasn't good enough to get on the field given how bad Cole was, either at RG or C, then why'd they give him as much money as they did? They should have just kept Dotson who was cheaper and as we now know, better. Anyway you want to slice it, back to my main point, they've f***ed up the line hardcore since Pouncey and DeCastro retired.

FYI, Daniels split time at LG his rookie year, started year 2 at C but was moved back to LG due to other injuries on the line, started at LG in Year 3 but had a season ending pec injury, and then played RG in his last year with the Bears.

My guess is they didn't think they were getting Seumalo at the time and wanted Herbig to either compete with Dotson or a draft pick. Then they pivoted when they got Seumalo, but had Herbig already.

But yes. It's been brutal.

The Steelers have also been very slow to swap out their underperformers in general really. I'm still slightly shocked they went to Rudolph.

Increasingly of the view that I want them to do C and RT through FA/Trade if possible and then go use the draft picks on the defence (and WR).

My reasoning

1) On the offensive side of the ball, they need to get the OL right and they need to get it right now. Both C and RT should be viewed as must upgrade positions after last year - but the OL is a difficult position for rookies and going into the draft with must upgrade positions is how reaches happen.

2) The defence is old and expensive and needs to start preparing for the day when it's either retired or getting cut for getting paid too much money. It's also paper thin in a lot of places depth wise. It's a good place to put draft resources as they can step into a unit with high quality players to learn from as important rotational back-ups with a clear path to contributing more.

I accept that the OL is also neither young nor cheap, but that's something they can look to address in coming years replacing it bit by bit or later rounds through shrewd value grabs - and maybe hopefully in a situation where the QB has the experience and quality to live with a shaky line rather than needing a strong line with which to grow.

I agree about RT, but I feel like cutting Cole to just go sign another C in free agency is a waste of money. I’d much rather draft a C in the 2nd or 3rd round and reallocate the money saved elsewhere.

If I thought Cole was going to play like he did in his first season, I'd agree.

If he plays like he did in his second, which is what I fear, it's a fantastic use of money.

Would it be better to use a draft pick? Maybe. But I don't want the team to have to reach and I don't want getting a draft pick to be an excuse for Mason Cole staying because they can't be sure of getting a guy and continuing to start because they can't start a rookie.

It’s a sad day when you have more faith in the Pirates ownership than you do the Steelers. Never in my life would I think I’d see the day.

Harbaugh >>>>>>>>>>> Tomlin.

The difference?

The QB. Lamar Jackson saved his job and will propel him to even further heights. No one is beating them this year. Just an insane team.

Come on now. The pirates org hasn't done anything to warrant more trust than the Steelers.
They signed KeBryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds. That gives me more hope than extending a Head Coach after another playoff blowout. Pirates are headed in the correct direction. The Steelers are not.

The Pirates have a good shot at making the playoffs soon. That’s better than 5 or 6 more years of Tomlin Press Conference Football.

This is a bad take. For better or worse, the Steelers ownership’s goal is to win every year, even if they are going about it the wrong way.

The Pirates ownership’s goal is to make the most money possible. Thats it.

I don't believe that ownership of either franchise will do what is necessary to win a championship. For different reasons for each.

The Steelers are closer only because they are in a league that actually has a level playing field.

But right now it is like comparing Forrest Gump to Rainman in playing on the show Jeopardy. Both equally don't have a chance for as far as the eye can see.

What a throw by Love. Watching today's game convinces me that we need to draft another QB. I can't imagine the Steelers competing against these teams with Pickett or Rudolph
