The issue Cowher took is something I can agree with. The Colts offered Saturday a job multiple times as an assistant and he turned them down citing he wanted to be with his family, only to take a HC gig when it came around. It does have a stink to it because if you were an assistant with Indy, you have every single right in the world to be pissed. You were there from the beginning.

With that being said, maybe these assistants kept their jobs because they hired Saturday. I get the feeling Irsay doesn't like any of the coaching staff.

People have a right to change their mind, yes? Perhaps at the time he wanted something more family friendly and this is a good way to dip his toe in the NFL HC water not having an entire season to commit to.

Unsure if you watched the whole segment but they conflated Reich the person (who by all accounts is a supremely nice guy) and Reich the coach. This is a bottom line business and Reich didn't deliver per expectations. So they went into defense mode for Reich. It was more feel-goody vs analysis of the situation. Then of course they have to throw in the Jimmy Ray thing and pander to the whole Rooney Rule loopholes.

Cowher came off like a douche in the pre-game show with his comments. Like he's part of this gilded society and no outsiders are permitted.

But that isn't even the issue here: Jeff Saturday had like 10 years in this league and was regarded as a smart dude. It's not like they plucked a guy who was playing MLB to be a coach of a completely different sport. If you've played in this league, you have credibility to be a coach.
It’s no different than the when they texans wanted to hire McCown and the league basically went crazy

I can't disagree.
But consistent pandering is still a flawed pursuit of "justice"

But I'm glad CBS is here to tell everyone they are the moral authority....oh wait...

I think credentialism is a drain on society, but so too are powerful/destructive people like Jim Irsay.
Cowher was a special teams coach and our current coach isn't adequate from an Xs and Os POV.

It's kind of weird that for players performance is all that matters; Kurt Warner bagged groceries before QBing a Super Bowl winner - but coaches is like moving up in an IBM-style matrix organization.
There also seems to be very little correlation between the performance/hype of (insert assistant/college coach here) and their success at the NFL level. From that standpoint, eh why not take a shot with a guy for 8 games when season's over anyway?
Irsay sucks as a person, but so many successful businessmen do. I'm curious to see how this turns out.

Yes he was a special teams coach for Cleveland but you also forget that Cowher was also the Chiefs Defensive Coordinator 3 seasons before getting hired here, running one of the top defenses at the time. I'm sure in those 3 years he learned a lot as far as the x and o side of things, which made him a better coach when he got to the Steelers.

I have gotten a kick out of the colts job being set up as a failure so no minority coach should want it. It’s also funny how quick they went back to Ryan to act like this isn’t a tank job.

Saturday strikes me as similar to Tomlin in that they provide energy and a simplicity that bring a breadth of fresh air for veteran teams. But they are the type that are only good for the short term.

You can laugh all you want at the Colts but Saturday isnt going to coach for 16+ years. As soon as things go sour...

I bet you Tomlin will still be the coach for the Steelers when Saturday gets fired.

Back to yesterday's game:

- It's crazy how essential Watt is to this team. He probably is worth another 1 to 1.5 additional series to our own offense. And with how badly they struggle to score points, they need more attempts
-I think I've seen KP throw more balls away this season than I have with Ben in the past 10 years. I think it was Steve Marricu who said something like "the hardest throw a QB can make is the one to throw it away. Their ego thinks they can make every pass, but it's just not possible"
- Harris with some nice runs, but I still think he's nothing special
-Nice not having to watch claypool fall down all over the field

I think they went back to Ryan because that is what the owner wanted. And Reich didn't want Ryan and thus the owner said, play Ryan, Reich said no and the owner made the change.

They then hired Saturday, a huge fan favorite to cover up how dysfunctional the organization has become.

For Saturday, it is likely that only a HC job would be a net promotion over his current analyst gig at ESPN. It's a big risk for Irsay, yes, but if he believes in this guy then this situation is as low downside as it is going to get. Saturday was not willing to go down the "paid his dues" route to get into coaching. By the way, neither did Bill Cowher have to pay his dues as a broadcaster.

If they get a couple more wins in a row im not sure you can say they are dysfunctional. It was probably stagnant with Reich.

Lots of season left, but it’s interesting to see Allen reverting back to his rookie year, and people openly wondering if he needs a shrink.

Bills don’t have second half TD since week 7 and Allen now leads the league in picks.

Cousins meanwhile has the Vikes at 8-1. They are a hard luck franchise so we’ll see how it goes, but I’d be interested in seeing how the narrative around Cousins changes if they win a SB.

Cousins has always put up impressive numbers and I’ve always felt he was a pretty good damn QB stuck on bad teams.

I was more than fine with Harris at 1, so if he doesn’t become a feature back. I can’t be bitching about the pick.

However, I honestly like Warren more, as he fits the kind of squatty, speed back I’ve always loved.

He and Warren could form a really good “Thunder and Lightning” duo for the next several years.

Canada deserves credit for getting Warren in there and finding a way to get him more touches yesterday.

I was fine with Harris at 1 also. I understood what they were trying to accomplish with the pick. I'll never be upset he was picked, but right now we are kind of seeing why people are so passionate about not taking a back 1st round.

The issue I'm having with Najee is his vision has been absolutely atrocious. This isn't a bum foot and he doesn't have burst. He has holes and he runs into the back of Cole or Daniels. It's almost comical.

Yeah the schedule for the colts will cover the tank job. Philly us cowboys Vikings giants chargers and Texans he isn’t going to win enough to justify losing the interim title.
Just like in 2018 when we went from 7-2-1 to 9-6-1 and miss the playoffs was blamed on Tomlin if they go 6/2 over the next 8 he will be get credit

When you’re picking in the first round, you want to take a shot at a difference maker…unfortunately that was never going to be Harris…and I’m beginning to wonder about Pickett…Steelers have been atrocious since picking Watt in their first round selections

If he can run like he did yesterday, I’ll be happy enough, but since I have a thing for explosive runners like Warren, I’ll likely wonder which guy is better all season TBTH.

I think both guys can be difference makers, but right now they are two guys who have the offense put on their shoulders and they aren't necessarily ready for it.

It’s way, way early to determine anything on KP. He’s gone against mostly all top ten Ds all season until yesterday and was asked to do way too much.

He needs to be a game manager for now.

Will take at least three years at a minimum, and even then look how things are going with Allen.

He was suppose to be the Manning to Mahome’s Brady.

RB is much less complicated of a position, if you aren’t seeing anything by this time with Harris, it’s concerning.

We’ll see how Harris finishes the season, but being alarmed about him now isn’t unwarranted.

Noticed on a couple of occasions yesterday Kenny correctly flicked the ball past the line of scrimmage before stepping out of bounds to avoid an unnecessary loss of yards. An improvement from his first couple starts.

Watching other games even vet's still make that mistake from time to time.

You can’t wait for 3 years anymore with Qb rookie scale you have to know by the end of year 2 if you want to extend him. It’s why the Eagles and Dolphins went all in to find out about Tua and Hurts.
It’s why New England is going to move on from Jones. The jets are doing a good job hiding Wilson but don’t think he gets a 2nd contract Fields running ability makes a 2nd contract possible but he needs a hurts jump in passing in the pocket to guarantee it and not put him in the Daniel jones category

Looking ahead to next year, the Steelers definitely need to bring Cam Sutton back. He’s been very good this year and adds a lot of versatility.

I’d also be totally fine with them signing Edmunds to a multi year deal. He’s nothing special, but has turned into a pretty reliable player.

I think Irsay wanted his team to have an identity and something to rally around. Reich had no personality. Matt Ryan has no personality. The team in general has no personality. Saturday at least gives them a face and some energy. Nelson is also probably stoked too because Saturday loves Running The Damn Ball
It probably helped that they got Jonathan Taylor back yesterday and Matt Ryan didn’t shit the bed. But that Raiders team needs an enema too.

Ya that’s not really true. KP has a four year deal and they can always go the Was/Cousins route and go on a year to year basis with his contract.

He won’t even be able to renegotiate his rookie deal until the end of year three unless you know about some new rule I’m unaware of.

And look at some of the bigger QB names this year:

Allen didn’t emerge until year three.

Tua and Hurts are only emerging now in their third years.

Fun question and I'm too lazy to view actually W/L....but what's the Steelers record against the Raiders in the Tomlin era? I think it's atrocious and the 1 game I'm most confident we lose this year.

With what Fields is doing the man is gonna get paid A LOT. He's pretty close to a lock to be a Lamar type QB.

I mean the dude set the rushing record last week and followed it up with. 147 yd rushing game and 2 TD passes. Sign me up for that.

Cousins has always been in that “good but not good enough” category plus I think he had a rep going back to college for being a douche, which probably didnt help public and media perception. Jefferson helps him quite a bit. He had one of those Kellen Winslow dragging himself off the field type days yesterday. Plus getting rid of Mike Zimmer who was stuck in the Woody Hayes era of football also probably helps. Hope they continue to do well.
