I know it's popular to be cynical and say it's only about the money but honestly, is there really THAT much money to gain? Maybe there is and I'm being a little bit naive but it is only an increase of two playoff games per season and I know there is money involved but there was also a lot of added drama to the end of the season. With only one first round bye per conference and a possibility of 3-4 teams earning that last playoff spot it has fanbases of teams that would have normally been ignoring the last 2-3 weeks interested in multiple games throughout the league.

Sure, the added interest and two extra playoff games ultimately result in more dollars but it also makes for a better more interesting fan experience which is something the NFL hasn't worried about in a long time.

Yeah I mean making more money is the goal of any sports league but I’m not as cynical about this move as some others. The last teams in still had winning records and as you said it makes winning your conference even more important than before.

NFL's new TV rights deals, explained: What $100 billion package means for fans in 2023 and beyond

TL;DR yes, it's a whole lot of money.

It's always about money. College football does it the best.

I do find it interesting that we're wondering the value of adding a couple of extra teams to the NFL playoff when we're on a message board for a league that allows half the teams into the playoffs, though it took the Seattle add to get us down to 50%. NBA is at 16 out of 30 (similar to NHL prior to Vegas+Seattle).

With all of that said, I'm not a fan of the expansion and would rather they go back to rewarding a 2nd really good team with a bye week. I'm sure they will do the opposite and expand by 2 more teams in order to do away with the bye week entirely.

I'm not saying they aren't making A LOT of money I'm just saying the money for those two games can't be THAT much percentage wise of the total contract for it to be cynically "just about the money". There are other positives for the league/fans than just the money made directly off the two extra games.

Yes it can. Not only are there two more playoff games this season as compared to last season, the league agreed to increase the amount of advertising time per each game. According to the WSJ, average cost of an ad for an early round playoff game is approximately $1.0mm. So you're talking about an increase of hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising revenue for the networks from the two extra playoff games alone, plus the millions of ad revenue from Week 18, which in turn increases the value of the broadcasting rights.

Your estimation of "hundreds of millions of dollars", that also includes the 17th game that we weren't talking about, might seem like a lot of money but at 15ish BILLION dollars of overall revenue you're talking about a single percentage point added total.
That's the point. Did they ruin the product or integrity of the game by adding an extra playoff team for 1% extra revenue? Or, are you just pissed a business is making more money by improving their product?

I'm not pissed at all. I'm just saying if you think this was for the "betterment" of the game and not about increasing overall revenue, you're in for a rude awakening.

I never said that. It is a business and every move they make to "better the product" is done with an eye toward increased revenue. Once again it's more of an nuanced conversation than the social media culture can have... Just because I'm not completely cynical about it I'm some kind of f***ing idiot that's in for a rude awakening? Yet you claim a move that created a 1% increase in revenue was done only for the money...ooookay.

It’s what they’ve done all year. Lot of game left.

Burrow is going to have nightmares about Jeff Simmons.

Bengals might have won anyway but the I'll advised attempt to go for 2 in the first half certainly changed the complexion of the game

Plays that lost it
Running the Football down their throats and decided to throw on 1st and goal got it Intercepted
3rd and inches and ran a stupid QB Sneak out of the Shotgun then everyone knew Henry was getting the ball on 4th and got stuffed.
Just stupid play calling all game and the Defense played good enough to win.

That third and two, should have run Henry on third and then Tanny on 4th if necessary, they called it backwards. Even so, on the 4th and 1, give Henry a FB and run it straight up the middle. As soon as he planted both feet and looked for a cut, the play was dead.

If they would have kicked the extra point instead of going for two they would have won by one point as all they would have had to do on the final drive was run the clock out and not make a risky pass that gave the Bengals possession via interception and ultimate winning field goal. I'm sure Vrabel will never admit it was a dumb call on his part.

That hurt. Hindsight is 20/20 but I’ll have more thoughts when I’m not several whiskeys deep.

I’ll never understand why on 3rd and 1 you try to qb sneak with Tannehill out of the shotgun. They had the game right there.

Tannehill has to go if this team wants to get serious about a super bowl. Tannehill is not that guy.
I agree. I’ve supported tannehill and sometimes even defended him. But tannehill just isn’t a playoff quarterback. He is 2-3 in the playoffs and the 2 wins he did get he didn’t have to do much. Throwing for roughly 75 and 88 yards. Yesterday just prove even more that we need a better quarterback to go anywhere in the playoffs. So what does Robinson do? I get tannehill is owned a lot next year but does Robinson do what the rams did last year and trade tannehill and couple of 1sts to get a quarterback that will push this team over the top in the playoffs. The oc will also have to go as well. He play calling was terrible
