First day of school? That was nearly three weeks ago!

:biglaugh:

So it looks like Idalia is going to give us a go here in GNV. :(
Been watching WFLA weather livestream. Models calling for a Cat 3 landfall just north of Cedar Key, Wed at 02:00. Their meteorologist just predicted 80 mph winds for Gainesville. Batten down the hatches and stay safe.

You're far enough inland that storm surge won't be an issue, right?

I'm in Gainesville itself. If we get ocean flooding, it'd be due to an extinction level impact event.

Sadly though, Cedar Key is just down the road - about 50 miles on a direct line, just about 60 by car. Snacks and such are laid in. The kids schools are closed for tomorrow and Wednesday. The older spawn finally responded that he's prepped for it at his place.

Update to this: this ended up being nothing. The band "ended" (it was never back on anyway), and we had to promise to never play the thing again.
Found that story fascinating BTW.

“Protect the kids law”. Such a strange concept. I assume they were protecting them from ideas? Or swear words (cursing)? Or maybe even the influence of heavy music?

I’m sure there’s a quote from someone that says that kids come up with far worse ideas than anything us adults can think to protect them from but here’s a good one from Terry Pratchett.

“There's some things that you wouldn't tackle in a children's book because it would be beyond, not the mental capabilities, but the experience of someone under the age of say ten or eleven to encompass. But that field is smaller than you might think. They can easily cope with death and things like that; they know about it and it's a subject that often preoccupies them.”

I generally talk to my kids about everything.

Honestly props on that- I remember my mom taking away my blink 182 cd because it had bad words/themes. Sweet mom, thanks for letting me know, ima borrow my friend’s copy so I can learn! I’ve ended up in some heavier topics with students, and as long as you explain it well and keep age in mind they usually aren’t too traumatized.

My best guess is the language and music. It probably would have been fine if we ended up in a different time slot. We weren’t exactly 10am family time music.

It's why it's a season. A lady on my zoom class yesterday said her kid's first day of college classes are in mid-September...

Myles starts his junior year of HS next week.

Home upkeep is expensive. But, replacing our falling apart wooden fence is going to be worth it. We didn't go with the prettiest option, but the black chain link looks really good where it is 95% complete.

Where I live, chain link is also called hurricane fence. Wood, both solid and shadow box, don’t stand up as well.
It was interesting to see how one side fell apart much faster than the other. We also got lucky that the fence along the back border of our property was much sturdier and protected by trees and we only had to replace the side and the front, including one gate.

Speaking of fencing, it would be interesting if my complex decided to replace the dilapidated section that separates my building from the next complex. Perhaps the storm will do some of the demolition work. Granted that would mean they would be interested in actually making something aesthetically and practically functional.

No formal salary offer or anything like that, because there's no job description yet. My current boss and I are supposed to work on that to figure out what the job description is, and then we'll go from there. Not every day you get to write your own job description 😂

From my county:

"Hurricane Idalia continues to intensify rapidly. It is currently a Category 2 Hurricane. When it makes landfall, it is projected to be a Category 3 or Category 4 storm. Alachua County is under a Hurricane Warning and has a 96% chance for tropical storm-force winds and a 47% chance for hurricane-force winds. (74mph or higher)

We want the public to know this is the strongest storm to approach us since the 1890s.
As of the current update, rainfall of 4 to 6 inches is expected. For Alachua County, the earliest anticipated onset of tropical storm winds is sometime overnight

We now have a Mandatory Evacuation Order that applies to those living in mobile and manufactured homes, substandard housing, and areas prone to flooding. For the safety of you and your loved ones, it is time to evacuate. Go to a hotel, stay with friends or family, or go to a shelter. If you do not evacuate, understand that it may take some time before public safety can reach you as we will not send them out during the dangerous period of the Hurricane."

We're expecting ~5+ inches rain here on Thursday, then we'll (hopefully) fly to Orlando Friday late afternoon. Our Memorial-Day weekend trip was scuttled (our choice) due to backlogged flights from thunderstorms. Hopefully, it will be in the clear by then.

Stay safe down there.

Orlando has a tropical storm warning. Seems they'll be getting enough wind and rain for that, shy of an unexpected veering east or west. Hope it doesn't mess up your plans much.

What is this "rain" thing you speak of?

Although, today's high did drop below 100 for the first time in like 3 months. Back into the triple digits for the next two weeks, though.

:surrender

Hopefully this storm suŕge estimate of 12-16 feet is an overestimate

Yeah, so much of Cedar Key is not built for that sort of surge. They will be smashed by this.

Waiting on it to turn inland.

Have I mentioned how much I don't enjoy Florida weather lately?

Who has the best remedy for a stye? I have my salary discussion meeting at 11, and my stye is being an asshole. I look like Rocky at the end of the Apollo fight. Adrian! Adrian!
