When I was 19 I needed to buy my first car. I found this “sick” 1987 white BMW 325i. First dream car since getting my license. But, I knew in Buffalo it couldn’t be my daily driver. I tried to find a way to get a beater for the winters AND this BMW. Unfortunately I maxed out my credit on the 1987 Ford Bronco II instead. I’ve spent the last 26 years wishing I had a 1987 BMWi.

As a parent myself I totally get your side of things, but having been in his position many years ago I’m happy for him. Life’s too short.
I’ll be happy for him if it lasts the year. If he spent all his summer job money on this and it’s dead in a month, I’ll be really sad for him.

The good news is that I helped him bleed the front breaks and it is in ok shape for an 1986 car that has lived in Syracuse and Buffalo most of its life.

He knows parts will be tough to come by, but it is a car that was built to be worked on and the people in the auto tech group chat at school are excited about him getting it. So, he’ll have plenty of help if he needs it.

I assume this is not related to theater productions :) Congrats.

My company / division has a "sister division" where it seems half the people with a pulse have a title of vice president. It's a running joke.

I chose a technical ladder for my career path, because I recognized I would have to sell my soul and / or give up too much personal time to achieve director or director-equivalent status. I'm one step below and content to ride my career out. The difference in integrated (cumulative) compensation isn't trivial, however, likely would have halved my timeline until retirement (i.e., several years).

Good luck with the politics!!

I was planning on a move like this in 5-8 years, so it's hitting a little earlier than expected. I'm officially vested in the NYS retirement pension program, so even if I only do it for a year, the roughly 21% bump will help with the retirement calculations.

I'm about to ask for a raise. I asked for a raise about two years ago, and got a 13% raise.

I always feel some nerves before walking into my nurse manager's office to ask for a raise. Interviews rarely phase me, but for some reason asking for a raise does.

Luckily, I've worked on a lot of projects with him and other nurse managers, so I won't need to go into too much detail on what I brought to the units I cover. It all comes down to how willing the nursing director is to go to war for me.

Send some good juju my way!

I went and looked at a job today on a multi-million dollar project, which pulled me off a job I was currently doing. The project manager showed me what needed to be done, and explained what he needed as far as timeframe and whatnot. Later I explained to my boss what it was, and told me that I’ll be the supervisor on it for when I need someone, and I’ll be doing it by myself if needed for longer than the timeframe, as they only want one floor done but there’s a chance to pick up another 6. Which means for at least this job, I’ll get a slight pay bump.

Unfortunately it means my weekend is gone.

Doesn't a Porsche have a "circular" or "star point" shift pattern instead of a typical "H" pattern?

1st mother-in-law used to let me drive her automatic (C or M-series?) Mercedes when she and my 1st wife would go house hunting. I'd chauffeur them around. That auto transmission pattern was something for a guy who only knew American designed-built vehicles. Had a really small turning radius - excellent for navigating subdivisions.

Not from the usual 5 speed label on the shifter knob...

Had a girl take me to the night market last night. While wandering I discovered my newest favorite food stall, they had 3 versions of pork ribs at $2.75 for 1kg with rice, minced pork in chilli sauce with rice for $1.10, and roast duck breast with rice for $2.00. I also found my new favorite snack which is a pork satay, dipped in batter then deep fried and served with a sweet chilli sauce for the princely sum of 5 baht or 15 cents.
While wandering we ran into some of her friends, being tired from walking I gave her 1k about $26 to go buy food. They came back, filled the table with pork, duck, crab, prawns, rice, sticky rice, vegetables etc and she handed me 300 baht back $10. So 5 people feasted, and the girls took the leftovers home. I know that I'll occasionally hit up the rib place, that way I can mix it up with my whole chicken fry stall which is 80 baht $2.30

Welp, I have a 'final' interview tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM. The head of my potential department is overseas (Tel Aviv). My last interview (completely different company) was at 9 PM to meet half of the team who was based in Australia. Weird times man, weird times. I'm then heading to Aruba with the wife for a destination wedding of her coworker. Hopefully I'll get some good news with regards to work while away.

So Thailand has no compulsion against full on discrimination. I go out in the full blown Aussie kit (denim shorts, tank top and flip flops) I ain't getting no action in the go gos unless I splash the cash and even then forget about getting the girls to agree to dinner or clubbing as they might be seen in public, but they'll hop on a motorbike to go straight home. Now toss on some trainers and a collar shirt, those same girls will pretty much go anywhere. There is an ethnic exception to this rule which is if you're Indian or Malaysian forget it. Dressed to the 9s by yourself, a few clubs will let you in. Hanging with a group ain't no chance in hell, you'll be lucky to pull the dregs from the Coconut Bar as historically the groups come in, buy 1 beer to share and sit there for an hour.

The reason I'm bringing this up is my friend is going to visit from Cambodia, while his brother will fly in from Mumbai. My friend has his doctorate in economics from Oxford, retired with full pension from ASEAN and now at double pay is contracted to work on Cambodian development. His brother is a surgeon. Jayant wants me to tour guide so they can get into the better Go Go's and night clubs as otherwise they'd be barred. He used to visit Angeles once or twice a month to go crazy as his work was too close to the entertainment district in Burgos so he didn't want to be found out. From out of all my friends, he was always the best one to bar hop with as he likes older, bigger girls while all my other friends like my type. So weekend is sorted Friday and Saturday as they're arriving via private Pnomh Penh- Pattaya and flying back Sunday to appear angelic for work Monday

So, Nate will be taking his car to school on a trailer. That decision makes me feel really good as getting the breaks to be functional has proven to be more challenging that he had hoped. The car has sat in a heated garage for five years, so getting things refreshed will take longer than he had hoped. I'm just glad he's taking the safe route and not rushing things and trying to drive it to school.

Reminded me of when I coached 7 year-olds.

Meanwhile, the adult male giraffe at that Tennessee zoo is confused and the other female giraffes are giving the monochrome male camel in the next habitat very suspicious looks.

(Before anyone jumps in, I know that camels and giraffes are actually not closely related.)
