I love most of Ryan Holiday's stuff. But, adding Daily Dad to my morning routine has been awesome since it came out recently.
I'm neither disputing nor dismissing the author you note above.

But, consider a similar story about another former SNL cast member, Adam Sandler. When speaking to high school students / graduates about their future, Sandler said (paraphrasing): "You don't need to go to college. I never went to college and I'm a multimillionaire." While both statements are factually true, they ignore the overwhelmingly larger population of HS graduates who are not millionaires.

I posit Sandler would have been a successful actor / comedian if he had gone to college, and that Ferrell would have garnered similar notoriety if he had joined the G&T after-school program instead of the square dancing.

The author's closing paragraph should be taken with a grain of salt, or perhaps modified such that the child must do something and choose between a mutually-agreed set of options. In today's world (and not the era of Sandler's / Ferrell's youth), I'm certain most young boys of similar age would choose to spend that time playing video games specifically designed to trigger dopamine release (and in addicting levels as determined by clinical studies).

Seems like I'm almost over this crud.
I'm in the middle of it.

Trust me, he is most certainly not someone who wants kids being inside playing video games all day long.

This is more in line of not being remote controller parents that make all of their kids' decisions for them such that they never develop the ability to make decisions for themselves. Way too many kids today graduate HS without the ability to make quality decisions. They get to college and have a hard time balancing all the options they now have to wade through because they never developed decision making muscles while they were growing up.

And yes, survivor bias is not a great way to make decisions. But, letting kids make these types of decisions for themselves and not making decisions for them is generally a better approach, IMO.

I think that's more of a bit by Sandler - he went to NYU and his friends have roasted him about how his acting/drama instructors told him he had no talent. His undergrad is from there.

As for the crud, I hope you get well soon.

En vino veritas. So sitting at big boy table, ie the one with stupid drink horn above it, this British couple on their 2nd day of vacation are hanging out with Gus and Paul. They're enjoying being able to pick the music, do what they want without being messed with etc.

So this one little girl ie 4'9ish 35ish kgs walks by and the husband goes man, that's a nice tramp stamp. The wife, goes what about mine. Husband says compared to that, your's is a roadside advertisement. She backhands him, guys snort their drink. Was quite funny

Asian culture generally means doing some crazy business stuff that almost no sane Westerner would do. If you're losing money, raise prices don't bother trying to determine the root cause. Then lose more money as you don't have customers so raise prices again. If your restaurant is failing, keep the same menu and staff, just change the name. There's a restaurant 2 blocks away that's on it's 3rd name in a year, started as a Greek restaurant with no Greek food, swapped to a Caribbean with no Caribbean food and is now a deli but no deli sandwiches.

So it's slow season because of the rain so tourist numbers are down. There's an expat that owns a bar in Pnomh Penh that used to be partners with a huge bar group here. Last night he had free booze from 8pm to midnight, we asked how it went. He says it was packed so his girls made money but then the crowd left as soon as his special ended so he estimated a couple hundred dollars in losses. He's starting a new special where draft beer is .75 cents from 8 to 12, so he's making maybe .20 cents a glass after accounting for running expenses. I fear he's on his last legs as he unceremoniously left Thailand

Tonight was funny, I had this girl that 'was crazy about me' come home but as soon as she saw the wheel chair and walker she had to leave. She said she couldn't be in a relationship with an invalid but that's her loss. The funny part is she didn't see the bouncers helping me in and out, nor the doorman helping me to the elevator.

I hate my friends. Have people visiting from the Philippines and they go oh by the way Mike is here so we told him where you're at. Mike is the whatever you did, he did it first and better. He's 5 star hotels and points until you ask where he's staying. He's just annoying and my friends pawned him off on me. Fortunately I had a prior engagement so pawned him off on Gus who hates him. Now I'll have to make it up to Gus as Mike will be in my bars everyday until he leaves, me as the boss not going in during business hours

So, I hate DC in the summer. Last weekend, I drove my tush to Lake Erie where the high was 74. Can't do that every weekend (heading back to Buffalo end of August). It has been 90 everyday with heat indices being worse. But work has finally slowed down (working 40 a week and not more seems manageable for a few weeks before Fall busy season).

I literally woke up with the urge to play EHM2007 (probably haven't played since 2019). After reading a bunch of places, I get that Sega no longer does licenses (I have my old computer but the screen barely works and it is super slow if the game even works, and I am tired of having to changed the birthdays every year to keep the 99-07 draftees in the league). I liked the simple graphics and creating players.

Should I try to buy (and learn the features of) the one from 2015? Can I do mostly the same stuff as 07 (create players and just let them develop, sign them etc- I've never been interested in the playing aspect of the game, more the management aspect)?

I seem to remember buying it at one point on some computer and being overwhelmed by the graphics and I just missed 07. I would gladly pay for 07 again but I guess that game is pretty much gone.

(I did go to the fantasy thread but it is like a foreign language in there and I am just trying to keep my question simple).

Shoulda got one game in
So my new phone came in last week, and I spent the afternoon trying to set it up. I had to go get the battery in my 7S replaced to get long enough power to transfer over the my new phone. That took a few hours.

Then this past Monday I went on a day trip to Barrie, as I have one bank account that no longer has a local branch, and that is the closest. I left at 6am, got there around 11am, and then dealt with them not wanting to help me. A: I didn’t have any government issued ID with me (no driver’s license as I wasn’t able to renew it on expiry because it was suspended and I couldn’t find my birth certificate) and B: the picture IDs I do have aren’t valid “proof”. My bank card I had with them expired in 2018 and they never sent me a new one, so that’s why I went. I had enough personal info on me and answered enough questions that the manager decided to be nice and give me a temporary card, which has been helpful.

And lastly, because of that card I was able to go pay off all of my driving fines (I got busted driving an illegal vehicle, unknown to me), which means next week I can go get it again. Once that comes in I’ll have to go to Barrie again to fully get my bank account access back, but at least things are coming up Milhouse.

So far my Saturday has included manual labour, a trip to the scrapyard, a trip to the walk-in at a hospital, four stiches and of course a tetanus shot because it had been too long. As long as the arm doesn't become infected I should survive, lol

I’m due to seriously cut myself soon. It’s been almost 10 years since my last shot, and that’s usually when I hurt myself enough to need stitches.

I installed a new dishwasher Friday night. It failed when we were on vacation (20yo son was at home and smelled electrical smell). Talked him through some troubleshooting then told him to leave it alone and hand-wash dishes until we returned on the 7th. I had already replaced the pump motor myself in 2019.

New washer ordered on the 8th, delivered on the 11th. Finally had time on the 14th to install it. Essentially had to do it twice because the hole in the sink cabinet for the drain hose, water line, and electrical cord was only about 1.25" / 30mm, but a 1.875" / 45mm hole was specified. That means the person who installed it originally in 2013 when we remodeled the kitchen passed the water line through then put the nuts and ferrules on the end.

My cheap ass didn't want to cut the old line and install a new nut and ferrule (the line was already plenty short and had no slack, another sign the nut and ferrule was installed last at the supply end under the sink) or replace it with an entire new water line (and new nuts and ferrules), nor did I want to drill a larger hole in the cabinet wall even though I have two hole saw kits, so I very carefully forced it through with a screwdriver as a pry-bar.

Original installation on the old machine in 2013 never actually affixed the washer to the cabinet / countertop (quartz), so I fixed that in 2019 as well. I made sure to affix the new washer securely to the cabinet (instead of the countertop).

I saved money on the installation by doing it myself, and I live within my city limits, so they'll haul off the old one for free tomorrow (vs. paying $50 for Lowes to haul off the old one).

Removed the disposal and cleaned some old waste buildup / blockage from that discharge elbow.

Mopped the floor because a couple weeks residue of skanky water leaked out (couldn't bail or sop up all of it in the sump because the drain line still held some, etc.).

Loaded the christening run of dirty dishes and in bed by 11pm.

Love the new machine. You can barely hear it running. My wife is a great cook and baker (her hobbies), so I do the dishes and clean the kitchen 95% of the time.

Edit: Weather-wise,
2.45" rain Thursday and 4.53" Friday on my weather station.
Temp Friday night a 11pm was 81 degrees, 99% humidity, 94 degrees heat index.
Sunday 4:30 AM 80 degrees, 99% humidity, 91 heat index.
Was actually getting condensation on the exterior of the French door glass off the kitchen at sunrise.
Daytime indicated highs 95-96 for forecasted highs of 90-91 degrees.
Heat indices maxing at 110-112.
Highs this week in the 90s with 96 predicted for Thursday.
I'm thinking my weather station might show 99 (I moved it earlier this Spring). I'll move a couple other thermometers around to determine if I have a location bias (from radiant surface heat).
My record heat index last summer was 126 when I had an air temp of 101 (old weather station location towards backyard rear ditch). I'm 16 feet off the ground, weather service recommends 30 feet.
We'll see what happens this week.

If not for your own elbowgrease in the following lines and the kid's age, I'd have suspected parental sabotage. "Sorry son, I guess you'll have to hand wash the dishes. Oh, shame about the mower, too. What do you think, should you fix it or use the push mower? Rent some goats? We're excited to find out!"

I installed a Bosch DW around Christmas 2021 and it has been magic. Quiet, hassle-free, powerful.

It's going to be interesting to see how this works out. One of the lacrosse moms knows one of the higher ups at the company that installed the turf and he told her it was so hot out there.

Nate is moving into a quad dorm room setup. Two of his quadmates are on the football team. So, I am sure I will hear about their feedback from having camp on the turf soon after Nate returns to school next month.

This looks crazy.

The air quality is pretty bad again in Rochester. Is this a symptom of climate change? Ive been talking to family about it, and they can't recall it ever being this terrible of air quality during a single summer.

My son would throw that back at me as me being passive-aggressive. In other news (since many have posted about jobs, or jobs of offspring), he started a job while we were on vacation working 4AM to noon at Target unloading trucks for back-stock. It's been great for him.

We considered two Bosch models and a 4th model (can't remember brand). We chose this KitchenAid which is made by Whirlpool. With a July 4th sale, it was substantially cheaper than the two Bosch models, had the same features we cared about, and is essentially inaudible. The one we replaced had the silverware rack in the door (you could choose to put it in the bottom rack if you want), so maybe we lost a little space with the new model rack, but the increased depth allows me to fit a full-sized Wilton cookie sheet which is nice because I typically had to hand-wash those with the old machine (or else jam them in or lay them "flat" with a slight tilt. I also have the option of fitting her intermediate measuring cups (1/4 cup to 1 cup) in the new silverware rack vs. the old model they typically went on the upper rack.

Edit: we had a late-spring issue with grain weevils (came in with a bag of rice from the grocery store) which wreaked havoc with the pantry (oatmeal, pastas) and the baking cabinet (numerous flours, etc.). Had a specialty visit (two actually) from the pest control agency we use (covered in our contract) and throw out probably 100 pounds of flours / grain products. in two separate purges We didn't want to take a chance of them persisting with another undetected hatching cycle. They're not a health risk per se, but we learned they can shut down entire commercial grain warehouses.
