From first hand knowledge, those working at the station expect it to close in 2026. The only reason they haven’t already is that radio coverage was built into Ottawa’s TV deal with TSN.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Send opted for a daily podcast or YouTube show that do in-house.

Dedicated Sens content and the ability to better control marketing etc.
I hope they bring back Craig, his video content was the best.

Brian Murray died on either a Friday night or a Saturday morning, I have forgotten which of the two days.

TSN1200 is off on weekends. Not one word about his death until Monday. A man who was GM for 9 years, had coached the team to its only Cup run. Had been here for 11 years. A local guy. A poster child for cancer awareness and good health. No word for 2 days.

The Sens have learned to use this. They make controversial deals, signings, trades, moves, personnel changes, Friday afternoon.

Media has lost its way!

I use to have a small portable radio, I would take it to listen to, when I cycled and kayaked. On a weekend, I could go 2-3 hour on the bike. And then 1 hour on the kayak in the afternoon. So from 9 am to 3-4 pm I could be out and about for hours, if you factor in running errands. And listening to radio.

And for those 6-8 hours, regardless of the station, it was the same news cast repeated. And the same weather forecast.. and it was always, The present high is 13 degrees, today's high is expected to be 24 degrees and sunny. This was repeated at 9 pm.

Someone was recording a 4 minute news break at 6 am and playing it all day.. or maybe the day before and making things up for the weather. Someone could have launched nuclear weapons and we would not know. We would get: interest rates are expected to rise and todays high is expected to be 24 and sunny.

Media has got to go back to fulfilling its duty as a public service. And they wonder why we tune them out!

the CSA and Hockey Canada have new leadership.. It is time for the CRTC to do the same.

I wonder if today's high will be 24 and sunny?

Why are we still in summer mode?????

NO......NO........ please, no more Dan Patrick and Cowherd...

Can someone tell me how to start a Gofundme page?

Schreiter and Mendes.. We can call it "all men are scum".. put them on from 10-4.... Fanduel can be the main sponsor.

Lupron, Eligard, Lucrin can run ads. HUH!!! It will be perfect

Not really. He has known for years the station is going to shutdown once the contract is up. All TSN radio stations lose money, even TSN1050 and TSN690.

I hate government spending in private business with a passion.....but I'll make an exception for radio. Radio is one medium that we NEED to keep alive.

the damage may be done.

I have been listening less and less, but I woke up early and tuned in t the morning show. Numerous repeat commercials. many are self promoting.

In a 1/2 hour stretch, I must of heard a commercial for the REBLACkS a dozen times. Sometimes twice in a single break.

be careful of government money, it has been used for years. From 1994-1998, I drove up and down the 401 every weekend. and so would station surf. Most stations between Montreal and Toronto were nothing but government supported. Near negligible private sector ads. So imagine the hundreds of statins province wide.

Go by today, go past Kingston, Belleville and tune into the local station or two.. Very little private sector ads.

I know....but I also remember last year after the derecho took out power for nearly a week. That also meant no internet or tv in my home for a few days. That radio was our lifeline to what was going on (in Ottawa at least, CFRA kinda dropped the ball for those of us in Prescott Russell).

I often wonder the way things are going weatherwise, when the next big storm will be, because you know it's going to happen again. Having a medium like radio that almost everyone has one (and is cheap to buy) is invaluable. We can't let all the radio stations disappear.

TSN1200 football pool used to get thousands of entries....can't be bothered now.....but TSN1050 show in the afternoon on 1200 advertises theirs.....listener engagement not a valuable asset I guess.

I agree with the sentiment because I have found a new level of appreciation for audio-only nonmusic media in the age of "everything is a video".

But why do we need to keep it around? If people aren't using it, even if I wish it weren't so, why put public money into it?

my belief is: reduce the number of stations.

The CRTC has to limit licenses to 1 per 100,000 people. Essentially in eastern Ontario 15 max.

allow signal strength to be high enough to transmit over 200 KM. Ask that all towers be along the Ottawa river. (in the east, this way we do not get into transmission wars with the USA)

Mandate local content based upon transmission area.

Now you have a monopoly, but a controlled one. and one that can attract advertisers based upon concentrated audience.

Ontario wide, you have 150 stations max.

I can see that happening. Enough stations to cover the market, but not so many that you dilute all the advertising streams.

As long as the province is covered.

Why is radio so important?

At one time it was a cheap and accessible way for people of all social strata to be engaged with the news and current affairs.

Is TV and internet still a privileged form of communication? Seems unlikely.

I listen to the radio in the car and that's it.

They did make internet an essential service in Canada with the goal of 100% of the population having high speed access by 2030.

No point living in the past to keep radio alive if there's a more effective means of getting the same.

My caveat about this phenomenon around choice is that the multiplicity of channels for information can be limiting your perspective and/or contributing to the echo chamber effect.

I choose the stories or websites to get my news from, and I end up self-editing my input as a result.

With the radio, and the daily newspaper, your intake is being curated somewhat and you may be exposed to something that you might not ordinarily had chosen to learn about.

You can certainly discipline yourself to do this on your own, but to be honest I tend to focus more on my own specialized interests.

I actually resubscribed to the Economist and Maclean’s just to balance things out a bit from a mainstream perspective.

I’m sure there are sites that do this as well, but I’m still clicking on the headlines that interest me as opposed to reading front to back.

Again, you can do all this yourself, but due to laziness or lack of time I prefer to let someone else do it.

That is a good point. I don't have much to add to that, but I agree that is an issue. Just going further down the same hole's, but not actually branching out.

I just ignore it all at this point. Not to be ignorant, but to preserve my own mental health. I hear Trump is gonna win again. Barf.

Which podcasts are you liking?

I regularly listen to:

-Locked on Sens (found them annoying at first but their news / content is what brings me back).
-Coming in Hot (my fav but it's not daily)
-32Thoughts
-Steve Warne's pod cast (not regularly, Jungle is annoying).

But looking for more, especially for in the car on road trips.

What podcasts is everybody into?
