I'm not exactly sure where to put this but in the latest PHLY Podcast Charlie and Bill criticized Tortorella (and somewhat the organization as a whole) more than usual - specifically calling out the double standard Torts has between players and how the organization itself embraces/promotes "chaos" rather than stability.

Found it interesting when Charlie brought up Elias Pettersson. He said now that it’s moot he’d bring it up but when his contract extension was dragging out & his name was being talked about as a potential trade guy around the league. Based on what he heard the issue with Pettersson in Vancouver was around not particularly being a fan of Rick Tocchet.

So he thinks if there was a scenario where Pettersson was going to be traded out of Vancouver he’s not really sure how much of suitor the Flyers would have been. As he doesn’t think Pettersson would have wanted to play for Tortorella & ultimately the Flyers as an organization don’t want players that don’t want to play for Tortorella.

This was in a larger discussion of how Tortorella could potentially impact them acquiring a star player which he thinks percentage wise at this point would probably have to be through trade if they did.

weird... i thought everyone loved Torts..

i cant wait for the Michkov disaster thats coming..

Keenan was a tough coach and demanded accountability but I don’t recall him benching players to embarrass them. He also knew a thing or two about offense. Thompson and his sad PP would have been down the road. Of course with Keith Allen around as the GM any goofiness by the coach like Tortorella has pulled off wouldn’t have been tolerated.

@BiggE, @deadhead What did you fellows think of Mike Keenan at the time in the 80's? Not comparing, just looking for insight from some longtime fans.
Keenan had his whipping boys, but the guys he’d jerk in and out of the lineup were 4th liners and 3rd pair D like Lindsay Carson, Rich Sutter and Tomas Ericsson. He didn’t scratch guys like Poulin, Propp and Crossman in the middle of a playoff race.

Keenan was also innovative when it came to systems and his teams were excellent at both ES and special teams. Keenan had a limited shelf life but he was a much better coach, at every facet of the game, than Torts.

Also Keenan had to deal with the legit tragedy of Lindbergh’s death, and he handled that as well as a coach could.

You missed his unecessary weird goalie pulling/switches....

You should have a chat with his former goalies...

Yeah it was odd, but he mainly did it to slow down the game and stall when the team was struggling.

Also, since he leaned extremely heavily on his top 4 D, it might have been to give them, especially Howe, a breather.
Nah that's a revisionist version, he flat out embarrassed them with multiple pulls in a single game, also sometimes switching goalies from the end of regulation and putting in a new one in OT.

Some members on this board probably think that Dineen and Barber are better than Torts... we just had the second version of those goofs in Hakstol, that was enough for me.

Nah, Russian players are used to tough coaches. They hate coaches who say one thing and do exactly the opposite. But if you're a honest dude, even if you're kinda an asshole, it's not a problem.

As far as I understand nobody blames Torts that he's a dishonest asshole.

On his podcast Ray Ferraro criticized Torts for preaching accountability for others, but then having no accountability for scratching his captain. Then Dreger basically called the Philly media wimps for not pressing Tortorella more about the Couturier situation in the the press conference after the Toronto game. He said they should have kept asking questions about it even after Torts said he wouldn't comment.

The Philly media bugs me nearly as much as Tortorella. He would never get away with ducking a situation like in this Canada or Boston or New York without the media calling him out constantly and vociferously.

But here, it’s barely a whisper. Bad enough a large segment of the fanbase worships this petulant child, but apparently the local media genuflects to the god emperor as well.

Conspiracy theory time:

Did they intentionally throw ASF to the gulag to strike fear into the other media members if they don’t kiss the ring?

He’s a member of a podcast that is partnered with the team after all and he enjoys the “badge of honor.”

I’m just saying…
fill me in.
