The players who overachieved for Torts in the past tend to sustain that performance under him, it's when they leave him (Seth Jones, for example) they often fall off a cliff. I think a lot of his success is getting young players to buy in (he seems to have more trouble with veterans like Dubinsky and Hayes) and play a complete game. The other key is identifying the "bad fits" and quickly moving them out.
The problem isn't Torts but his GM, however, Briere seems to have his feet firmly on the ground (whereas the CBJ GM, who still has a job, is an idiot) and understands that as much as Torts is getting out of this team, that's probably all there is and they still need more talent
