The Flyers are second in the division, and 4th in the entire conference. While systematically obliterating some of the best teams in the league.

Not bad for a coach that doesn't know how to maximize his roster for a chance to win every night.

My fear has been and remains that Torts can squeeze some wins and false hope out of almost any roster we lump together, with the ultimate result being that we end up in a state of longterm mediocrity. His willingness to play younger players is refreshing, as is a team identity with some swagger, but his reliance on old school head games, disregard for x's and o's, and dubious player evaluations are all still major concerns.

I don't think anyone doubted Torts ability to get the most out of rosters like this. Yes its surprising that they have been playing this good, but there is also still plenty of time for things to go sour

The main issue people have with him on this club is questionable development tactics and dragging the team to over achievement and throwing off what should be a steady strategy of rebuilding

The players who overachieved for Torts in the past tend to sustain that performance under him, it's when they leave him (Seth Jones, for example) they often fall off a cliff. I think a lot of his success is getting young players to buy in (he seems to have more trouble with veterans like Dubinsky and Hayes) and play a complete game. The other key is identifying the "bad fits" and quickly moving them out.

The problem isn't Torts but his GM, however, Briere seems to have his feet firmly on the ground (whereas the CBJ GM, who still has a job, is an idiot) and understands that as much as Torts is getting out of this team, that's probably all there is and they still need more talent

In my GDT stat crunching I'd watched Hart's stats sink down to average/below-average after a good start, so when the reality became clear I did think "ah, that's explained."

Explains a lot that he never reached his potential due to the stress of the incident...his stats before the incident are elite.

The Flyers aren't collapsing, when you look at the numbers they've just come back to earth, in the middle of the pack, though the PP is also middle of the pack now.

About the best you could expect given their talent, solid two lines then one of the worst bottom six groups in the league, no 1st D-pair, and a starting goalie who literally imploded.
