If I'm management I'm calling up some of our young guys like Horowitz, Barger, and/or Martinez on September 1. If one or two get hot like Babe Schneider it would really inject some life into the stagnant hitting lineup.

I'm interested in seeing if Boston puts a claim on Bader, they are falling out of the race a little bit. Bader wouldn't be as much of a need for the Jays this year with Varsho/KK but he would be a nice replacement to Kiermaier in the offseason, as a guy who has opposite splits to Varsho. Bader/Varsho would make a nice platoon in CF.

The rules on September callups changed in the last couple years. You get just 2 now: 1 pitcher and 1 position player. And everyone expects the pitcher to be Chad Green.

Yep, that was the most baffling move of the offseason for me - trading one of the best prospects in baseball for a guy whose biggest strength was his defense in CF....only to then sign the best defensive CF in baseball moments later thus crippling Varsho's value by shifting him to LF.

Small note but the Jays signed Kiermaier first then traded for Varsho I believe a week later.

Also I think the Jays were trading for Varsho not because of his defense but for his complete play. In his first year as a full time player, Varsho had a 109 OPS+ with 5 WAR.

I’d like to think the Jays thought his bat would be around that or possibly improve. So I don’t believe they thought he would be a Pillar more so hoping for a Devon White which may be a possibility moving forward.

In terms of a comparison Belt’s bat is better than Teo, Kiermaier and Varsho have similar or better bats than Gurriel, Tapia and Zimmer with better defense.

The problem with this offense has and will always be the former all stars that regressed; Vlad, Springer, Chapman and Kirk not guys like Varsho.

It's like in a Leafs game when they post a stat like "When Matthews/Nylander/Marner don't score the Leafs are 0-14 this year". It's really hard to win consistently when your best players aren't playing like your best players.

Tiedemann with 11ks in 3.2ip last night.

He's still only thrown just over 100 innings in the minors but his overall combined stats are insane.

Screenshot (1139).png

109 innings pitched, only 61 hits allowed, silly SO/9 numbers and a total of only 3 homeruns given up.

How good this guy turns out to be will be a big determining factor in our teams future upside.

Yeah but there should be room to make 2 callups anyway on the position player side, because McCoy shouldn't even be here. That being said there aren't any everyday spots available for Barger once Bo and Chapman are back (both aren't expected to need more than 10 days and they've already been on the IL for 4 as of tomorrow), and Orelvis isn't even ready for an everyday role yet. Even for Horwitz there's arguments both ways. Some see him as a nice PH-only option vs RHP down the stretch, and some see him as a prospect who should only be called up when there's a consistent role available for him like when Belt needed a 10-day IL stint earlier in the season.

McCoy should be DFAed tomorrow with Lantigua's contract selected in his place, and Lukes or Horwitz for the 2nd callup. Then Zulueta (down at the complex, hasn't pitched since August 12 and isn't in the bullpen depth mix this season) gets phantom 60-day ILed like Otto Lopez to clear the additional 40-man spot for Green.

The projections for Varsho coming into rogers Center with the new outfield had him mid 30’s hr on the season. I don’t really get how rogers has turned into more of a pitchers park.

I'm a bit concerned about his command, but he has the stuff to be a TORS or elite 2 starter. If the command doesn't improve he's more of a 3rd guy for me.

Not sure about Lantigua's defense but I have read where his numbers are inflated. His exit velo's aren't great and he has been benefitting from whatever is causing the elevated offense in AAA.

I recall it being posted here that the robo-umps in AAA have a really tight zone, so walk numbers are inflated and hitters can sit back waiting for easily hittable pitches.

They are 5 games back of the Twins and have a 3 game series against them from Sep 4-6. Hope for a sweep and then see where the chips fall.
Yeah, it makes sense for them to bolster their team and try to chase down the Twins. I find it baffling that they didn't claim Renfroe or Bader, though... their offense sucks overall, but their OF is particularly bad with an 81 wRC+ and a combined 1.8 fWAR this year. Not that Renfroe and Bader are great or anything, but they have a couple terrible players in the lineup every day, so it couldn't hurt.
