It’s gonna be a helluva battle with Seattle (again) down the stretch.

Their schedule features a lot of mediocre to terrible teams. Ugh.

Meanwhile we play a lot of AL East teams in September…
That’s why they need to get rid of divisions. It’s a joke a team like Minnesota will end up with a higher seed than either Toronto or Seattle. The AL Central is a joke

While Jays gotta play the Yankees, TB, Boston and now a great team in Baltimore down the stretch, Seattle gets Oakland a bunch of times.

Some speculation that with a lack of a clear DFA candidate to correspond with Chad Green's return from the 60-day IL, and with Zulueta being assigned to the Complex League recently (also hasn't pitched since August 12th), Zulueta could get a phantom 60-day IL stint like they did with Otto Lopez to make room on the 40-man for Green instead of having to DFA and likely lose a decent depth player like Clement or Lukes.

Honestly, keeping in mind the Yankees look horrible right now, the Mariners probably have a harder schedule the rest of the way.

Once you cancel out the teams they both play, you have:

Jays: BAL x 3, CLE x 3, WSH x 3, COL x 3, BOS x 3, NYY x 6, TB x 2
Mariners: HOU x 6, CHW x 3, NYM x 3, LAA x 3, LAD x 3, OAK x 3, TEX x 3

The Jays gotta go on a run in early September, really no excuse to lose to Colorado and Washington

I think it has to be Espinal going down at this point. He had a distinct role as the only backup SS, but then they got DeJong. DeJong has been awful since they got him, but he was solid with the Cards and at least provides strong defense and a veteran presence as the last man off the bench.

I guess you could argue Schneider is better served playing every day in Buffalo, but they need his bat (whether he's starting or coming off the bench) a whole lot more than they need anything Espinal can provide right now.

Agreed, because I think the Jays will be using a lot more of Biggio instead of Kiermaier in their 2B/LF/CF alignment down the stretch to try and inject more consistent offense into the lineup. Ever since Varsho undid his swing adjustment at the end of July that seemed to have been messing with him for months at the plate, has a 114 wRC+ vs RHP in 41 PA since then which despite being a very small sample is actually way closer to his career norms despite what many think of him now in terms of his hitting ability. Before the Jays got him he had a career 112 wRC+ vs RHP in 767 PA with the DBacks.

If this is who Varsho is now, he is more valuable than KK in CF, and a Whit/Varsho LF/CF combo will provide way more value than a Varsho/KK combo would when also considering that after Biggio made noted changes to his plate approach in mid-May, he has a 153 wRC+ vs RHP in 123 PA since then. For a team that's desperate for any offense they can get, a Biggio/Schneider platoon at 2B will provide way more value right now than going back to the Whit/Varsho/KK alignment would.

There's no way Schneider should be the one getting sent down because Espinal and DeJong are both not capable of platooning with Biggio at 2B in his place. I also doubt the Jays cut ties with DeJong this quickly despite how bad he's been, because losing trust in Espinal defensively to play SS everyday in the event of a Bo injury is part of the reason they got DeJong. Espinal is almost certainly the one getting sent down tomorrow when Bo is back, unless the Jays have soured so quickly on DeJong that they would now prefer giving Barger a look in the event of another Bo injury, and DFA him instead of optioning Espinal.

Does DeJong play an 3B or what's Schneider like over there? Still need a back-up for Chappy.

Roden showing some power in AA recently. Had no extra base hits through 17 games but 3 HR and 2 doubles in his last 8 games. OPS in AA up to .894. His hit tool is so good if he can even get to the point where he's hitting a few HRs he'll be a pretty solid major leaguer.

Michael Dominguez quietly having a good year. Drafted later rounds out of HS in 2019. Has made his way up to AA. Was dominating A+ the 2 months of so before the promotion, June and July in Vancouver 39 IP, 43 K, 5 ER. Walks have still been an issue. ERA of 3.69 on the year in 78 innings with 90 K's. 5 IP, 5 K, 2 BB, 5 hits, 1 ER 2 days ago in AA. Rule 5 eligible this offseason.

At this point I’d rather the Jays just shoot both Espi and DeJong into orbit and bring up Clement. If they’re not going to trust Davis, bring Barger up too since he’s more of a need at 3B/SS/RF.
This bench construction doesn't make much sense. If Davis is kept there's no backup SS (unless you consider Clement to be capable), and if you swap him with Barger it's pretty much a wasted callup from a development standpoint for one of the team's top prospects, because there's no path for him to get playing time right now. You basically only want to call him up because of how bad Espinal and DeJong suck, when Barger could still use reps at AAA.

5th round pick Connor O'Halloran got his first game action with Dunedin yesterday. 2 IP, 1 K, 1 BB, 0 hits, 1 ER.

Uh yeah? Exactly.

Merrifield/Biggio can play 2B, Barger can backup Chapman/Bo/Springer, and Clement can backup everyone. If they’re giving Springer an extra day of rest and putting Biggio in RF then I’m going to go out on a limb and say that they can find time to put Barger in the lineup. Give Vladdy a rest and put Biggio in at 1B. Give Chappy some time off at 3B. Kiermaier/Varsho don’t have to be in the lineup everyday either. But please, Espinal and DeJong cannot be the guys to fill in the holes and they provide zero options for late game situational hitting.

Since Barger has come back he’s been getting better every week offensively. Over the last month he’s been walking more than he strikes out and has more XBH than singles… that entire Bisons lineup is hot so I’d much rather grab someone with confidence than use Espi who’s been struggling for over a year now or DeJong who is chasing every pitch a foot off the plate.

While all of these ideas make sense logically from the perspective of improving the team right now, unfortunately I doubt any of these are options the FO seriously considers, especially when it comes to Barger. If the only reps he's getting would be on rest days to guys like Chapman, Springer and Vlad, it wouldn't be enough for one of the top prospects in the org. They're going to call him up when there's an everyday spot for him.

In Clement's case I agree, I've been wanting him to hold a spot on this roster for a while now too with his hitting vs LHP, but if the FO really believed Clement was a capable enough SS defensively to back up Bo (we already know he's a capable 3B defensively), then he would have taken Espinal's roster spot a while ago.

Plus, with the way they're apparently going to be easing Bo in once he's activated, I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't completely 100% right now but they desperately need his bat back. I doubt they DFA the SS that they traded for because they don't trust anyone else there defensively if Bo's hurt, and risk being back in the same situation if Bo gets hurt again.

That’s a weird stat line. 2ip no hits but one earned run. I’m assume he came in and left in the middle of innings and his walk was cashed in.
