Bass performance notes:

Among qualified Jays relievers, he was:

-lowest in IP (20)
-lowest in K rate (~21%)
-3rd highest in walk rate (~10%. and the 2 guys ahead of him, Richards and Swanson, are also by far the team's best strikeout relievers)
-2nd worst in ERA (4.95, ahead of only Garcia)
-worst by FIP, xFIP, and SIERA by significant margins (at least half a run to a full run for each)
-2nd lowest BABIP (.261) trailing only Swanson
-highest hard contact %
-by far the lowest leverage index when he enters the game (which means that the situation when he enters the game is, on average, far less important or high risk than any other Jays reliever)
-One of only 2 Jays relievers to have a negative Win Probability Added (a negative # means that the pitcher's performance was such that he made it less likely his team could win the game). The other is Garcia, but Garcia also tended to come in to much more difficult situations where small variances would have larger impacts
-the worst "clutch" factor rating (a measure of how much better or worse the player does in high leverage situations vs context neutral ones)
-The worst shutdown-to-meltdown ratio on the team (1 SD vs 4 MD, so 0.25. He's the only reliever that's less than 1. Shutdowns and Meltdowns are attributed to performances that cross certain thresholds on the WPA index, basically crediting pitchers who do well enough or poorly enough to significantly impact their team's fortunes in any particular appearance. It was meant as a sort of replacement for saves that strips away the arbitrary nature of save situations and the limited availability of collecting saves.

So yes, Garcia has the gaudier ERA and he looks worse for often coming in to much more important situations, but there are numbers taht also suggest he should be able to right the ship and get better results, and that some of his problems are due to experiencing these struggles in high-value situations. Meanwhile there's Bass who is pretty much the low guy on the bullpen totem pole and yet is still arguably the worst performer on the team outside of Pop (who didn't qualify above because he got hurt early on) and Cimber (who also didn't qualify due to low IP totals.

So there's a strong case to be made that Bass was cut in no small part because he had the easiest job on the team and was still bad at it, plus all the off-field distractions.

Now is Mitch White the answer for the pen? probably not. But he can also come in and inherit Bass' spot and it would be difficult for him to be significantly worse or more damaging. Or they could always just try and sneak him to the minors since he's out of options.

Still, this is a hole that Bass dug for himself in more ways than one.

I'm guessing White is only here until Zach Pop is activated anyway.

He probably clears waivers so that no one has to pick up his contract, elects free agency rather than assignment to the minors, then someone signs him to a cheap, possibly incentivized deal to prove himself.

Yeah I was gonna say the Jays probably made that cut based more on a baseball decision.

Chad Green is on his way back at some point. As is Zach Pop. And then Ryu probably moving into the pen once he's cleared.

It's literally a nothing cut.

Shitshow aside, Atkins wording on Manoah was interesting;

I can't imagine a couple weeks is enough time to fix what's wrong with him. I wasn't expecting him back until August/September if at all honestly.

Well to be fair the FCL season ends in mid-August. I doubt they will just send him home for the year if the Jays season is still on.

I, for one, think this Fish Last Name person is a distraction to their team, a cancer, and should be punted away immediately.

DFA Mike Trout.

I wouldn't pick him up between his bloated salary, health problems, and one of the most uncluch players in baseball history. Something is obviously wrong with him.

if someone wants a replacement level pitcher who is a headache they can have him

He was very good the last couple years. Someone will absolutely pick him up and hope he regains form. My money is on that he more likely than not will return to being a trustworthy pen arm somewhere.

Serious question. We aren’t half way thru the season BUT is Varsho a FT player in the MLB? I guess based on the offense it’s yes? He doesn’t appear to be able to hit.

What has been going on with Varsh all season long? Wasn't he supposed to be a better hitter than this? Will he get to 100 OPS+ at some point?

The Mets may never win again
Cohen has to be thrilled he's paying almost 350 million dollars for what essentially amounts to a gaudy dumpster fire.

I don't even understand what the hell happened. The pitching i can understand blowing up given they put all their eggs in the old geezer basket. Legit all-stars in Marte and McNeil have crashed back to earth hard. Alonso's numbers are way uglier than the surface level stats say. Lindor still sucks, Escobar has crashed so hard he's halfway to China.

It's like this team isn't allowed to have multiple good seasons in a row.

Edit: Alonso is also out a month with a bone bruise/sprained wrist. Woof.

Jesus f***ing christ...

ENOUGH

I said no politics days ago and I f***ing meant it. But I was a soft touch because honestly I like most of you well enough that I don't want to be a hardass mod about this when I feel like even the people I disagree with will mostly happily not talk about it and move on given the chance.

But here we are. AGAIN.

If people wanna quit watching the team because they don't agree with whatever, fine. Quit. Nobody cares. Don't call attention to it like your participation matters.

And on the other side even if you think you're defending common sense/rationality/basic ethical awareness/whatever, don't give in. Every post someone makes responding to a political post is one more that a mod like me has to stop and read and delete if necessary because the site rules are NO POLITICS. Yes, I am aware that the issue of basic decency and equal treatment for a group of disadvantaged or targeted people isn't really a political issue as much as it is a social and humanistic one, and that turning them political from an action/discussion standpoint that some people use the idea of accepting discrimination as a political tool that actually appears to extend into a secular arena, but the site rules aren't long enough to be so precise so all such issues are under the political umbrella for the purposes of the site saying it shan't be talked about. So here we are.

And for anyone that wants to bring it up, HF is a privately owned and operated entity and is thus entitled to place whatever restrictions it wants on applicable and allowable discourse for anyone using its platform or representing it. So no, your freedom of speech is not violated by a moderator telling you that there will be no political discussion. Not any more than Rogers had the right to sanction Anthony Bass for his comments/actions in light of the fact that diversity, inclusiveness, and equality are cornerstones of Rogers' public outreach image (again, not saying this to politicize the issue, just that the company makes a big deal of its social programs to address discrimination based on everything from race to sexuality to disability/physical infirmity. As such their public image aligns with those things and as an employer they have every right from a legal standpoint to chastise an employee who uses the platform they provide to publicly act contrary to those values. Regardless of my feelings I would expect the same thing of a religious organization banning its members from espousing views contrary to their own on issues like sexuality, abortion, divorce, or anything else. It doesn't make it morally right or wrong. It makes it what it is.)

This is now, I think, the FIFTH warning I've had to put up on this matter. So far I've gone from "posts will be deleted" "posts will be deleted and you may be sanctioned further." to "posts will be deleted, can be sanctioned further, and you may be removed from the thread.

No more gray area. No more wiggle room.

Anyone else that brings a political bent into here, in addition to having their posts deleted, WILL be banned from the thread for a yet-to-be-determined period, and WILL probably receive a warning (severity to be based on the severity of the post).

I'm tired of coming back to this thread every couple of hours to find it on fire. I do have other things to do. I hated every moment of writing this post. It took me like 20 minutes to do so and in that time I had to stop no fewer than 3 times to delete continually encroaching violating posts, well-meaning and... less so.

Now I'd really like to just crack open my drink (or probably put it back in the fridge and grab a fresh one), pop open the snack bag, and enjoy a little time relaxing and watching some TV or something. Cause it's still just 10pm here and I don't want to spend the rest of the time before I go to bed putting out garbage fires.

Nem out here wielding the hammer lol.

anyways on topic sonny gray is a monster but they gotta break through on the offensive side of the ball soon, they're closing the gap on NYY and to a lesser degree the orioles so would be nice to catch fire here.
