There's a slight downgrade there while they went from a below average defense to elite and they added one of their best relievers. They also added Belt.
They've scored 317 runs this year. Through the same number of games last year, they had scored 323. That doesn't seem particularly significant to me.
The team is nowhere near as potent offensively as they were last season. Even last year they had problems stringing hits and base runners together, but at least they had power through the lineup and could put up big innings out of nowhere. This season they have the same problem but even less power through the lineup so the offense is like squeezing blood from a stone.Gurriel last year is essentially what Merrifield has been doing sans the baserunning/defensive flexibility. Varsho’s been relatively fine from a power standpoint. Not Teo but not Tapia either. Kiermaier has been good offensively.
Really, as has been mentioned by myself and others, I truly believe there’s a mirage at play. Players who performed well last year are scuffling this year, and the overall offensive numbers look underwhelming because they’ve been impacted by one of the more pitcher friendly parks this year (the dome). So while they might look bad, relative to the conditions they’re still good.
Runs scored the last few games:
2-2-2-3.
Did last year’s team ever have a stretch like that? Maybe they did, but this year seems a degree worse than last.
And as for the tough opposition argument … some of these teams were behind us significantly last season. Other teams have gotten much better while we’ve gotten worse. Jays have owned Baltimore recently … not this year.
I’ll also add that a significant number of the runs scored this year came earlier when both Vladdy and Chapman were hitting close to .400. Now that they’ve both settled back down to close to career norms, the offense is basically Bichette and the occasional big game from Belt/Merrifield/Springer/Kirk/Jansen/Biggio.
