HF Habs: The official 2023-2024 tank thread

Would you say the Rangers made the right decision then, considering they are contenders now?

If elite talent comes cheap you should always be willing to add, even if it accelerates the timeline a little bit
If the plan was to be a contender for 15+ years, no the Rangers didn't make the right decision. That forward group is as old as the Penguins's one.

I gotta say I called it at the beginning of the season on here. I said the Habs would be within striking distance of a wild card spot. Now, the habs sit 4 points behind Washington and 5 points behind Carolina and have a game on hand over Carolina. And when you consider the amount of injuries so far, I'd say the team is doing pretty good. I still predict playoffs. I think Washington has gotten old and are going to go in a slump. Forget the tank, you gotta support your team. And then if the players get a whiff of potential playoffs, they will finish the year strong.

Think about this. The team is to good to tank. They are at this position where the draft pick might not be so good, plus this upcoming draft is not deep at all. So hoping for a tank to get a better pick is just dumb. If the team picks later than 10 then you will likely get a guy that won't be ready for 3 to 5 years. So cheer your team on to make the playoffs. And we all know anything can happen in the playoffs.
I called something along the lines before drafting Reinbacher.

The Habs have a lot of young interesting talent and they will get better. But… I then added this was why I saw it as HUGE mistake to draft a D.

The team can’t start to rise in the standings without top offensive talent because it will recreate the last 30 years. You get top offensive talent at the top of the draft and guys like Reinbacher can slip in the 10-15 range on some years. And let’s not forget that the Habs already have a lot of young D.

It was much better to take a chance on Michkov, Benson and co, who have top offensive talent potential EVEN if the player flops BECAUSE of this current situation which was fairly easy to predict.

The fact that you have a management team that were unanimous about drafting Reinbacher is a huge problem of tunnel vision and very very disappointing.

But to get back to your message, let’s not recreate the last 30 years of being a bubble team with a few Cinderella runs.

That doesn't make sense.

If Benson and Michkov are perceived as not likely to be impact forwards, then they should not be considered.

It’s based on management being unanimous about something that wasn’t unanimous outside their office.

You can do what ever with an « if ». I can put one anyware too.. what « if » Reinbacher never plays in the NHL ???

That’s not the point at all.

Kreider and Panarin are 32, Z is 30, Trouba 29, Shesterkin 28, Fox 25

I don’t think they’re about to fall right off a cliff…(not that I think they’re much of a contender either)

How could that be… I read here incessantly that GM Stevie Y was a genius …

U mean inheriting Stamkos & Hedman to start of as GM, and being able to attract & sign players for below market value due to Fla no state tax & weather helped?

Maybe just a little. You needed Stamkos and Hedman especially to win those cups.

I don't know why this post is so infuriating to me, but nobody is a consistent contender for 15+ years anymore, and the Rangers are 1st place in the East now.
Great but they will never win a Cup because they ruined all their prospects. And it is possible to be a contender for 5-7 years with some luck and the right management.

Everyone: We're still rebuilding and our team sucks and is injury riddled, let's tank and grab a top forward.

WOW! 13th OT and we are only at the end of December? Those extra point are killing the tank lol.
They lost 5 of those OT so they would have 28 points right now if it was regular losses. Definitely better for the tank 😅

Of course I'd be absolutely delighted to see the habs get another top 10 pick, but I'd be surprised and disappointed if we finished in the bottom 10. This team is simply too good compared to the league basement, even without Dach.

The Leafs and Islanders were already at 13 OT, before the Habs got their 13th one and Leafs have played less games. Kraken are also at 12. There is a bunch of a teams with 10 OT too.

It just seems to be a season of overtime.

6-8 is probably where we finish this year. There is no argument to be made that we catch Chicago, San Jose or Anaheim in the "tank standings". I also think Ottawa, Columbus and the Kraken are going to be tough to pass, although not impossible. Arizona likely drops, mix in Calgary and possibly Pittsburgh below us as well. Edmonton, Buffalo, Wild, Blues, Wings and Devils should all maintain and eventually pull comfortably ahead of us.

6-8 should be a comfortable spot to project us at this point.
