You need elite talent up front to win cups. You need other things as well but elite talent is part of the recipe. The easiest way to acquire said talent with high probability is with a high draft pick which is why, for a rebuilding team, a high draft pick is somewhat synonymous to elite talent acquisition.I just think any argument like "every cup winner since X year has had at least X # of players drafted in the top-X" is borderline ignoramus
How many teams don't have a player drafted in the top-5 or 10? Most teams have at least 1 top 10 pick within the past 10 years. Of course one of these teams wins the cups every year because every team fits the criteria, meanwhile we ignore the other 30 teams that fit the criteria and don't win the cup
You also need depth, good leadership and a physical yet mobile D. That's why I view it as a recipe and we're currently missing a vital ingredient whilst positioning ourselves to attempt to skip it.
