I just think any argument like "every cup winner since X year has had at least X # of players drafted in the top-X" is borderline ignoramus

How many teams don't have a player drafted in the top-5 or 10? Most teams have at least 1 top 10 pick within the past 10 years. Of course one of these teams wins the cups every year because every team fits the criteria, meanwhile we ignore the other 30 teams that fit the criteria and don't win the cup
You need elite talent up front to win cups. You need other things as well but elite talent is part of the recipe. The easiest way to acquire said talent with high probability is with a high draft pick which is why, for a rebuilding team, a high draft pick is somewhat synonymous to elite talent acquisition.

You also need depth, good leadership and a physical yet mobile D. That's why I view it as a recipe and we're currently missing a vital ingredient whilst positioning ourselves to attempt to skip it.

Why are you so confident that Gorton is the guy to turn it around then, when the only reason New York is a contender now is because Panarin and Fox both forced their way to NYC? Slaf + Reinbacher is looking like a Lafreniere + Kakko esque haul and we couldn't even bring PLD home, there won't be another young star who wants to come to Montreal anytime soon it seems

Maybe another recipe for success is playing for a desirable market, and that's why Canadian teams never win anymore. Perhaps Montreal should lean into the night life angle a little bit harder, and let Russians back on the team.
Gorton was fired ~2.5 years into the Ranger's rebuild because he refused to switch to contender mode and acquire muscles/ready pieces to make the roster a contender.

The team forwards age average is 30 years now. That's not the look of a team getting out of a rebuild.

i doubt he can jump right back into to playoff-intesity hockey.
Dach should start his on ice training 2 months earlier based on Dvorak who had a similar surgery. Dvo was on ice in August, but only cleared to play in early November.

Man Buffalo and Sens are terrible organisation. How can they suck more than us after all this time?
Buffalo's management refuse to spend to fix the holes and get the proper vet leadership to surround the kids.

Sens made the mistake of keeping D.J. Smith too long, it was clear 2 years ago that he wasn't the coach to move that team from rebuild to bubble/contender status.

starting to get worried about the wings, they did this last year when they started the season hot but then turned to shit. This year they started even better and now are in a bit of free fall having lost again tonight and have won just 3 of their last 10. boo

I have a little question for all of you:

Can you guess the ONLY team in the league without a 10 goals scorer yet?
I think it was just us and San Jose until Hertl had a two goal night on Sunday.

The Wings are a team whose rebuild has gone very much like ours, they're just a few years ahead. The inability to acquire top-end talent will leave them as a likely Playoff bubble team throughout the entirety of their "window", such as it is, in a very competitive Atlantic division.

I gotta say I called it at the beginning of the season on here. I said the Habs would be within striking distance of a wild card spot. Now, the habs sit 4 points behind Washington and 5 points behind Carolina and have a game on hand over Carolina. And when you consider the amount of injuries so far, I'd say the team is doing pretty good. I still predict playoffs. I think Washington has gotten old and are going to go in a slump. Forget the tank, you gotta support your team. And then if the players get a whiff of potential playoffs, they will finish the year strong.

Think about this. The team is to good to tank. They are at this position where the draft pick might not be so good, plus this upcoming draft is not deep at all. So hoping for a tank to get a better pick is just dumb. If the team picks later than 10 then you will likely get a guy that won't be ready for 3 to 5 years. So cheer your team on to make the playoffs. And we all know anything can happen in the playoffs.

Nah, I'll cheer for what I determine to be best for the team and you can do the same.

They are also 5 points from the 5th overall pick despite playing a bit over their heads. I think it's a great spot. I wouldn't worry too much about the draft pick there are plenty of great option in the top 10ish which is where I imagine they will end up.

How could that be… I read here incessantly that GM Stevie Y was a genius …

U mean inheriting Stamkos & Hedman to start of as GM, and being able to attract & sign players for below market value due to Fla no state tax & weather helped?

Minnesota has been a house of horrors for the Habs so hopefully that continues tonight. Really need a regulation L, if they win and get to two games over .500 with Chicago on the schedule tomorrow that would really suck.

Habs are riding high off a wpg win and feeling good for Anderson. Their morale is through the roof. I think they sweep this back to back unfortunately.

I don't really see the point of doing the 500th debate about cheering for wins vs cheering for the tank vs cheering for culture vs cheering for high picks blah blah blah, whatever anyone wants to cheer for, there is going to be a severe course correction coming for the Habs soon. We're 5th last in goal differential, 4th last in xGF%, dead last in the league with 6 regulation wins and have 8 wins in OT/shootouts. We're getting some lucky sequencing and some bounces in the OT/SO minigames and are still just 5 points up on 28th place with over 60% of the season to go.

I could squint and see an argument that the Habs have "good" goaltending by the very depleted standards of today's NHL and that we might outperform some of the underlying indicators, but it's not like we're getting superstar performances either, just above average performance from Montembeault and average ish from Allen & Primeau. My guess is we'll end up in the 6-8 range, spend 3 months panicking we won't get one of the "big 5" forwards, and then Dickinson, Levshunov, and Silyayev will all go before our pick and we'll end up with one of the "big 5" forwards that we all wanted to tank for all along.

At this point mtl can't draft with the high pick anyways. I'm just hoping the core of the team plays well and gets better with each game. Then guys like armia amd monahan play well enough to bring something back in a trade

Would you say the Rangers made the right decision then, considering they are contenders now?

If elite talent comes cheap you should always be willing to add, even if it accelerates the timeline a little bit
