We're tied with Tampa at one game over .500. Please just start losing already you bums. It makes zero sense. Caufield isn't scoring, Suzuki is same as always, Slaf is improving but not producing, Guhle has struggled. Yet here we are.

Yeah, wins with Anderson, Dvorak scoring is the worst outcome possible to a win.

When I was a kid/young teen, I absolutely loved watching garbage low talent Habs teams like this one compete and win games they should have lost cause I had no standards whatsoever.

I was a true fefan with no vision and homer goggles on 24/7, I loved each and every plug on the roster and battling year in, year out to make the playoffs as a mediocre team that had no shot to win it all sounded like a great plan.

Too bad I'm not 11 anymore cause I'd be thrilled right now. Who needs an elite forward when you can watch Vanilla Dvorak and Donkey Anderson score useless goals in what should have been a franchise defining rebuild year.

Since 2012 (11 years) we've picked 5 times in the top 10, how'd that work out for us? Too early to tell for the last 2, but the other 3 didn't bring us jack shit. Takes more than high picks to succeed in this league.

For some perspective, we are currently just two points ahead of where we were last year after 31 games (32 vs 30) and we ended up finishing 28th. This time last year we also went 1-7-1 in our next 9 games, and later on we had a 1-9 (or 2-10) stretch in March as well, before closing the season with a 1-7 run too. I just don't really see the OT magic continuing much longer and this is still a team with a -19 goal differential.

Looking at the teams behind us it's hard to envision us finishing ahead of Ottawa, Edmonton, Minnesota, Seattle, Buffalo, Calgary, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh. Maybe Calgary if they really pull the chute at some point. I guess if people expected us to be seriously in contention for 32nd pre-lotto then yeah that's out of reach but I don't think that was ever really in the cards. We're still just a bad week or two away from dropping back to the 5-7 range again.

Sadly, most Habs fans are still that version of you at 11, which is why we never improve. Mediocrity is gleefully tolerated and encouraged with every dopamine-raising useless win, just so they can get their quick fix.

Case in point.

We've gotten 19 points from OT/SO. We are 6-13 in regulation.
Ridiculous stat. Silver lining: they're learning and growing and are hopefully building confidence.

Worst possible scenario to be existing the rebuild as a mid team with no elite players. Rinse and repeat.
We're also bottomX in relevant categories like shots for and shots against. So we're not really playing well to begin with and we don't have a single 70pt player much less several (playoff teams have on average three 65+ pt players, we have maybe one). Hughes hasn't acquired scoring depth (he's not done much of anything) and the team is not playing particularly good hockey. It's well and truly the worst case scenario.

And this is why I've stopped giving a f***

Feel free to join me in apathy, anyone else. Trust me, it's way healthier.
I'm rather anti-tank but anti-tank by definition implies pro-building. Hughes didn't acquire talent last summer, he just sold cap space... in fact, this roster lost depth over summer. Young players have not significantly improved their scoring rates either.

The only interesting meta-topic left is to see if Hughes can manage to manoeuvre out of this but even then... we dont' have a single player who is PPG or prospect on track of being PPG. We don't have Carey Price either. So, what sort of team is Hughes assembling?

One without top-end talent as per usual.

For entertainment only: Montreal would be 29th in the league if the scoring system was based on a 3-2-1 system (3pts for RTW, 2pts for OTW, 1pt for OTL, 0pt for RTL)
Below stats based on current point percentages:

Standings = Current position in NHL standings (based on P%)
ADJ standings = If we apply the 3-2-1 system
Movement = How many spots that team falls/rises based on the 3-2-1

Case in point.
f*** your case in point. Ottawa, Buffalo, and other teams have picked high forever and it gave them nothing. It takes more than that, but I wouldn't expect one track minds like yours that know nothing about building a team to understand. Like I said, we picked 5 times in the top 10 in the last 11 years already and it gave nothing up to now.

I'm pretty sure that the Habs are finishing before Buffalo, Seattle and Calgary.

Buffalo roster is almost a full year younger than the Habs and their management refuse to spend to improve.
Seattle overachieved last season, they finished 4th two years ago. They don't have any game breaking talent to get them out of where they are.
Calgary are apparently already planning to be sellers at the deadline and aiming for a re-tool this off-season.

Ottawa entirely depends if the players are responding to Jacques Martin, who isn't going to give them fun practices or let them ignore the "not fun things" like playing defense.

I also don't expect the Habs to have a long 7-9 games losing stretch this season, outside maybe post deadline if they do lots of trades and have to add some of the prospects in the AHL to fill the holes.

2 points ahead of where they were at this point last year and everything about their point accumulation is pointing to heavy regression.

The tank will happen.
Or more likely it won’t….

Last season the spread amongst Eastern Conf teams was significant, top-3 teams in Atlantic for example had separated from the pack that’s not the case this year. Also, Metro is a significantly weaker division this season, and 5-teams from Atlantic will make the playoffs IMO
