It's pretty weird to watch the Capitals and Penguins try to hang on, but it's pretty obvious that there's nothing left in the tank for those teams and really no future in the pipeline.

It's like when you saw the Sakic Avalanche and Yzerman Red Wings finally fall off

Tankophiles are so strange. Pens and Caps will not readily or easily replace their superstars, their odds of success are better with their aging superstars than without. The "rebuild" will come soon no matter what, they're well aware of this, but they rightfully won't blow it up for no reason when they have a PPG+ player like Crosby humming along on a friendly caphit.

Getting Bedard alone puts them way ahead of us in their rebuild.
This is the type of message that the fans of the culture club don’t like to see. They will spend hours trying to figure out negative comparables, etc.

The fact remains that to win game you need top offensive talent up front, which is the hardest thing to get.

So the logic is that you get the hardest first and then build around it. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes.

I actually remember Sakic getting better as he was older though.

But yeah Ovechkin has been done. Even last season where he had an apparently good season, he had so many offensive zone starts to achieve this, while still being a negative overall weight, that is was just unsustainable.

If he wasn’t going after the record, he would not have produced like that. But I get that the team can still sell tickets with him for a while.

They will do exactly the same thing they did last year. Shit the bed after not doing anything at TDL.

Crosby is UFA after next year.... I know it's a pipe dream but I want him to come home and help us win a few cups. I think it would time out pretty well...

haha didn't do the math, but he could probably play until he is 40 if he wanted... but he may not...

i think we are a good 6 years from being a top team, and that's only if they figure out drafting and get the FA's plus a goalie. A tall task ;)

It's pretty hard to predict, but I generally agree. Wow fans are losing their shit now... imagine 3 years from now...

Lets hope they don't draft more 2nd pairing D over snipers ;)

You mean over "superstar" snipers...

I think the biggest challenge moving forward is going to be the contracts and trying to fit as many winning players into a decent salary structure. The bald guy is going to have some tough decisions to make... most GM's downfall is bad contracts

I’d like to see a decent hockey structure.

Then we better resign Yoel and Dvorak to put on the line with Sid.

At least picking outside the top 5, we won’t have to watch this team pass on a superstar forward for positional needs (RD).

We deserve an extra 3 shit years for passing on Mitchkov, sorry I’m still bitter !

Even Cole's contract could end up being a Bergy special if they don't get him some linemates lol

time for sid to come home

Won't happen unless he forces the issue... But if they flame out this year, with their cap situation and brutal prospect pool, writting will be on the wall.... a smart GM would start hiving off pieces to do a proper reset. One that Sid may well not want to be sign a new deal.

but with just 1 year left, and his relationship with Letang/Malkin/Mario & the city, he may be compelled to see out his last year as they try to bandaid one more attempt.

With how well he's playing & what a complete player he is, I'd have no issue trading assets for his 37yr old season at 8.7M), then re-signing him for 2-3 more @ 8-9M (38-39-40). Few guys are still at a high level at that age, but as Pavelski is showing, it is doable. Sid has the attributes to be one.

who knows where we'll pick yet as this time last year we were just outside a wild card spot.

They look so bad, I wouldn't count them out of a top 5 pick, though there are a lot of shitty teams again this year. As of today the 6th to 14th spot is wide open and the bottom 5 look set for now but there's still so much hockey left a lot can happen. Habs don't have that many games left vs the real shitty teams though I was surprised at how terrible the pens looked yesterday as I figured they would be back in the race at some point but not if they suck as bad as they played last night.

The games will start to tighten up as well... which will probably help team tank especially as we showcase players and let guys get their surgeries done early etc...

A stopgap until Celebrini is ready.

we can always dream!!
