Since MSL's hiring we are a 0.432 team and if we finish the season at that rate we would end up with 74 points. That would have put us 6th last year, and 7th the year before.

At present we would project to end up 9th last if we finish the season at that .432 pace and the other teams continue at their current pace (Which isn't likely due to the short sample size skewing things for them). That said only Edmonton and Ottawa were really expected to be much better, the rest are bad teams playing bad so even if we start to lose more it will be tough for those teams to catch us. So something around 7th last is probably the odds on favourite right now but it's obviously still very early.

We will, barely beat a terrible Detroit team.
They didn't look that much better than the Habs and Detroit might end lower in the division if things continue as they are. They had a very hot start going 5-1, but are 2-6 in their 8 remaining games...

Yzerman is a little bit overrated. If they miss the playoff this year and next year. He could lose his job as GM.

a little bit overrated? he's learning the school of tough knocks; a hell of a lot easier to build a team in sunny Florida, players are generally happier, low taxes, beaches oceans, pick... These players a multi millionaires, there is close to zero appeal (for millionaire athletes) to actively choose Detroit to live.

imo, he's constructed that Detroit team no better than Bergevin did with the Habs.

Dylan Larkin = Suzuki

and we both know youre not winning a Cup with those guys as 1C

Bargain Bin didn't construct the Habs, he deconstructed them.

Honestly don't know what's worse. Shitting to bed with a top pick or being in no mans land. At least try to be ballsy and overpay for elite players.

? that's just silly.

What we are seeing right now is excellent for the goal of building a contender.

Suzuki, CC, Newhook, Slaf, Guhle, Harris, X, Barron... if we want/expect some/all of these kids to be key contributors on a cup contending team in their prime, this is the way. The compete level the coaching staff is getting out of them nightly, despite this roster being -today- no better than a bottom 3-5 roster in the league, is EXACTLY what building a culture of excellence is all about.

Adding another high pick would be great, and hopefully we can do that either by taking our lumps in the last tier of the season, after selling off some vets and dealing with playoff focused teams ratcheting up their intensity, or by packaging some pics/futures + assets acquired by moving vets, to move up in the lottery/draft.

but if you think that building a contender will best be served by having the team play worse and compete less, i couldn't disagree more... that approach never works. Winning does't happen overnight, nor does it happen to a group that gets accustomed to losing or a loser mentality (see Oilers, Edmonton)

Pretty much every successful rebuild passes through no-mans land on their way to being contenders. The key is not getting stuck there and considering it's questionable if we will even be in no-mans land by the end of the season it's probably a bit premature to worry about right now. Odds are still for us to finish with a top-10 pick, but even if we don't our best players were drafted 13, 15, and 16 so it's not like the sky is falling and it's all doom and gloom.

On the bright side, Habs are still tied for last in the NHL with only two regulation wins.

The losses should start to come.
We most likely will start to lose more but I'm not sure I buy the regulation wins argument all that much. So sure our OT/Shootout record will likely regress but we probably will have less OT/Shootout games moving forward anyways. Like seriously 50% of our games have gone to extra time, that's not normal and given that we've quite often blown 3rd period leads that lead to OT/Shootouts there's a good chance that we start picking up more regulation wins.

They usually already have the stars in place during that no man's land stretch. As good as Suzuki/CC/Guhle are playing, I question if they can be the best forward/dman on a contending team.

I definitely think you can be a contender with Caufield as your best player, he's a stud. But really it doesn't matter because it's a team game it's not about whether Caufield/Suzuki/Guhle are big enough stars to carry a team, it's about how many others can get to a similar enough level. As an example it doesn't matter if Dach doesn't surpasses Suzuzki or Reinbacher/Hutson surpass Guhle, what matters is that they get to a high enough level that it's no longer a group of 3 guys but a group of 5+ guys.
