Tell that to the oilers lol

Speaking from direct experience, I can tell you that sometimes getting rid of more talented players is a necessary part of building a culture of excellence... And can lead to better results both short & long term.

You still need elite talent to get to the top, but i'd argue that it's easier to add (& attract) elite talent to a great culture, than it is to build a great culture around elite talent with shitty attitudes
I think elite talent creates good culture more often than not.

And Culture can change in a short time like how we're seeing with the Habs. Getting a kuvherov/Makar/Matthews/etc that's a lot tougher

Watching the BTS of the last draft, it was clear Gorton preferred the michkov pick and Hughes let's his staff have the say when drafting which is fine. I believe if a talented winger is placed in front of them again, Gorton will override his scouts and make the decision as he deferred last year
I felt that way too at first but maybe he's just testing his scouts. Hugo like to play mind games lol and it was such a tiny snippet in what's probably been weeks and weeks of behind closed doors talks.

Maybe but at this point, all they need besides an elite goalie is a super relented winger. The have too many D and Reinbacher was the only piece they were missing. They're fine with Suzuki and Dach at C going forward. They know that they need a winger. It's just a matter of whether they take a safe bet or a high ceiling type pick

Yea and michkov was very unique too with the khl contract.

Hopefully 2024 draft is the year we get one. We need top 3 pick

They can win the lottery for the 1st or 2nd pick but otherwise they don’t really need a top 3 to get a high end forward. There’s at least 2 dmam that will go top 5

Culture doesn't change quickly or easily... The Habs are moving in a positive direction after wholesale changes to all key leadership roles start started 2 years ago. I'm not sure any of the involved parties would consider the work done...

Yes, getting elite talent is hard. But interesting you'd use Matthews (& Marner & Tavares & Nylander) as an example given that I don't think the Laffs have managed to build a culture of excellence (their results certainly suggest they haven't) despite years of having elite talent in their lineup... I'd say they, like the oilers, are prime examples of why simply accumulating elite talent is never enough

I don't see it.

Penguins and Chicago were both crap environments before they got their superstars. Took them what 2 years to see the culture change?

Habs culture isn't finished by any means but it's good enough for now and way better than it was 2 years ago. Culture isn't holding us back right now it's talent. And that's tough to get. Takes a lot of luck at the right time. Odds are low.

Talent is like free money for culture building. High value that's tough to get. But once you get it a lot can change quickly. It only takes a bum franchise like Edmonton or Toronto to f*ck that up lol. Not too many of those around the league.

I keep seeing posters mention dach. He’s not guaranteed to ever play again. Don’t depend on it. Move on.

Patience isn't for everyone.

Point remains that one without the other doesn't create sustainable excellence.

Things change quickly. Just little over a week ago I heard St Louis say Habs played their best game since he got in Montreal. They were 5-2-2. Now 4 straight losses, sounds like same team is destitute

I think most of us had the Habs as a bottom 10 team this year...There will be highs and lows over the course of the season, but they will more than likely finish in that bottom 5-10 spot. In the grand scheme of things, another very high pick would do this team wonders. Most rebuilding teams pick in the top ten 3-5 years in a row before getting noticeably better.

I had them in the bubble up until February, but that Dach injury made me lose interest real quick. Really a bummer.

Montreal had (and has) 2 regulation wins. Seasons always have ebbs and flows, but this team has always been destined for the lottery.
