Top 5 will be well within reach. We're about to be back to .500 in a hurry after that lucky 5-2-2 start.

I only see SJ and Chicago as definitely worse than us. We should battle with the likes of Columbus, Philly, etc. for the next spots. Anaheim and Arizona seem like they are taking a step ahead and St. Louis and Washington should still be better. Edmonton will wake up and Calgary isn't this horrible.

I'm not sure the people who wanted to wait until PLD became UFA wanted to acquire PLD that badly. And considering how PLD has looked in LA, I don't think anyone who wanted to wait for PLD to reach free agency is all that fussed about not paying Winnipeg's price right now.
My point exactly. This whole trade and re-sign is just there so that people can pretend that they actually want Monahan when they don't actually care that much.
I disagree.

Your assumptions are just that, assumptions. They aren't any more grounded or valid than that.

All I suggested is what's best case imo... And if you think players & management don't come to informal agreements that affect contract decisions, I would offer that perhaps your assumptions aren't grounded in the real world of pro sports.
Except they are grounded in facts unlike yours. The fact is the situation is quite rare and when it does happen it's usually a case of family wanting to not move.

As for informal agreements, yes they happen, but they happen because both sides have something to gain. As an example look at the KK offersheet followed by the long term deal, both sides gained something by having that informal agreement in place. Monahan gains nothing in your scenario because the contract offer will be there opening day of FA whether he's agreed to it beforehand or not.

 why bother with a post like this where you contradict yourself?

That you can't see the "gain" is an issue with your awareness, nothing more.

Elite talent that's well coached and complimented with a well balanced line up. We've gone down this road a 1000 times. You need elite talent to win cups. It's a prerequisite but not the sole requirement.
Elite talent
Strong culture

Can't win without either.

It's easier to establish a good culture when you actually have the players to build around.

Tell that to the oilers lol

Speaking from direct experience, I can tell you that sometimes getting rid of more talented players is a necessary part of building a culture of excellence... And can lead to better results both short & long term.

You still need elite talent to get to the top, but i'd argue that it's easier to add (& attract) elite talent to a great culture, than it is to build a great culture around elite talent with shitty attitudes

Another top 5 pick or higher would be great. Knowing Bobrov and Lapointe will be making that pick again though makes me want to go vomit. :(
Watching the BTS of the last draft, it was clear Gorton preferred the michkov pick and Hughes let's his staff have the say when drafting which is fine. I believe if a talented winger is placed in front of them again, Gorton will override his scouts and make the decision as he deferred last year
