I've hear a good ideal.

This only applies to the last 12 teams after the trade deadline.

Whoever as the best % of winning after that date gets the better spot in the Draft.
So at least we get a great 20 last game.
Like winning we'll get you the better draft spot ..
Well its bad.

No teams would be seller anymoe. Why trade someone at the deadline if it makes you worst + prevent you from getting a high pick? What we want is trade and action. This is not the way to do it.

Here is my take :

1) raise salary cap by 10M$ -give more flexibility for teams to eat cap-

2) give teams possibility to buy out one player every 5 years without salary cap implications

3) limit contract duration to 5 years. More movements and less bad contracts.

4) Every team have one player that dont count against the cap, need to decide who it is at the start of each season.

5) add more teams in the playoffs. 24 instead of 16. When there is 6 teams left (3 esch division) you rank then by their points again -without conference-. So two West/East teams could face up in the finals.

6) the 8 teams missing the playoffs all have the same odds for 1st ov.

7) the 8 teams missing the playoffs should be awarded one day before all the other teams to speak with UFAs. That way it might give them a chance to get better faster.

Desired results for tonight:

- MTL regulation loss to CBJ: CBJ move 2 pts behind.

- ARI win vs. MIN: ARI win + MTL reg. loss = ARI moves 1 pt ahead. MTL with a game in hand.
- OTT win vs. PIT: OTT win + MTL reg. loss = OTT move 2 pts behind with 2 games in hand. If OT/SO win, PIT move 7 pts ahead with the loser point with a game in hand.
- ANA win vs. CHI: ANA win + MTL reg. loss = ANA moves 7 pts behind.
- BUF win vs. DET: BUF win + MTL reg. loss = BUF moves 9 pts ahead. MTL with a game in hand.

*MTL could end the night in 27th place (Bottom-6) with a regulation loss and an ARI win. In truth, if MTL loses in regulation, all ARI will need is at least a point to pass MTL. Would be tied in pts, but ARI has more RWs.*

Wow let's give GM's more incentive to offer up dumb contracts.
BTW the PA will NEVER approve a 5yr cap on term.
This doesn't change anything it will simply suck more money out of the healthy well run teams.

This sure seems like an easier faster way of digging out of things like Bergevin's mess.
The onus however must be put on not ending up there in the first place.

This would be interesting, but keep in mind if the draft order is randomized, TDL draft picks suddenly become much more AND much LESS valuable. Montreal's 1st round pick now has no more value than Florida's, since the order comes down to blind luck. Bottom teams might do just as well selling their 1st round picks as they would acquiring them. It would completely transform the TDL in both a good and bad way.
By draft wheel I meant more something like
https://cdn0.vox-cdn.com/assets/4484507/lotterywheel_medium.png

where the picks have been evenly distributed and teams are simply moving through the pattern and getting every pick once before repeating. So luck is taken completely out of the equation (Beyond the luck of a draft year being better or worse), if you trade a pick you always know it's rank even if it's for a draft several years out.

Montreal has tanked for two seasons plus whatever they are doing this season. I say if you're going to tank, do it right. Montreal last season could have had better odds of winning the lottery had they tanked more efficiently. I don't get all that consumed in drafting as you never know for the most part what the player drafted will be when mature, lot of luck involved there. There is no actual template to build a cup contender as a cup contender stems from assembling the best roster and there are multiple ways of doing that.
Montreal got lucky with Monahan but it was suppose to be a season of integrating and developing the young players, but selective players as it has turned out. If the intention was to tank again, why not play more rookies. Playing the kids would be advantageous as to what their tool set has to offer.

There's so much more to a rebuild then getting the best lottery pick though.

For example, you say why not play the young guys more, which sure sounds great in principle, but rushing players can hurt them long term. Playing a rookie in a role they aren't ready for is more likely to hurt the rebuild then help it. We just saw with Xhekaj that taking a step back and going back to the AHL can be very beneficial, but if you've traded everyone of value to tank harder then that doesn't happen and the odds of Xhekaj reaching his potential is lowered. Same goes with Slafkovsky, throw him on the top line right away might get him more points after 100 games, but long term having him play in the bottom six focused not on points but on building the fundamentals of his game is likely the better path for him.

So when you say if your going to tank do it right, that's not what successful tanks like Tampa or Chicago (The Kane/Toews version) actually did, they didn't tank harder, they didn't sell off everyone to get a better draft pick/lottery odds. What they did was keep their star vets but and also went out and tried to get more like Chicago spending big on the UFA Khabibulin.

I think I officially don't care, as long as we stay at #7. All these prospects from #2-10 are similar calibre. Let's just win the lottery from #7 or get a stud forward in that spot.

While we're at it let's see Slaf score 20 and Suzuki get to 82+ points!

Probably not getting a stud forward at 7.

They were never going to lose this game.
Not when the only good players the Jackets have are being rested or are hurt.

Now I hope multiple D got drafted in the top 5.

It's very probable that a lot of D's will be pick ahead of MTL.

That will be help for Habs to pick a really good forward even in 6-7 spot. Eiserman, Iginla, Catton and Helenius that's a lot of good forwards.

A lot of 2nd liners we needed Demidov or Lindstrom Catton is the only chance at a 1st liner in that group

Columbus with 22 shots. Habs are getting dominated by those "pathetic" teams.
Difference they will draft ahead of us.
While the Habs are playing over their head bailed by the goalies which has been such a successful formula in the last 30 years.
I'm convinced we're heading towards the same perpetual mediocrity zone we've been stuck in for decades. Good defense and goaltending, mediocre at best offense with no game breaking talent.
Good enough to make the playoffs but never good enough to contend for anything, rinse and repeat.

Our only hope is winning the lottery this year and I don't see it. I know I'm a pessimist, a debbie downer, whatever you want to call it. But that's how I feel, hope they prove me wrong in a few years.
