With the 96th pick, the Canes select Swedish forward Axel Holmstrom.

Yes, we know. He played with Nylander at the U-18. Yes, we know. He needs to work on his skating. Yes we know, he needs to change his hair. But the overall skill set is great, he is naturally talented and has proven in the past that he wasn't solely a product of. And I believe he also proved it during that U-18. We will probably have to wait a little til we see him around, but 3 years of development in the SHL won't be bad for his overall game.

Next GM is PM'ed...oh right....that's me. :D Won't be long.

With the 97th selection, we decided to buy a 2 for 1 in Sweden, and select forward Kevin Elgestal

We love his implication in the play, his skating, how he's not afraid of mixing it up and his great passing skills. We believe he could become a really interesting 2-way player.

Next GM was PM'ed.

P.S. I know...some of you guys WILL like me. 'Cause I also hated myself for at least 3-5 guys.....you will know who as soon as you picked them....

Some solid picks there. I like Kase - if he manages to pout on 20 pounds of muscle he may b a good NHLer. Come on WS...surely you have your list memorized. Sheesh!

Is that really the only thing holding everyone back from this guy? Seems odd to see guys like Ho Sang and Pastrnak coveted so much, and this guy sitting around until the early 4th round. Not sure I see 2 rounds of draft ranking between them skill-wise, really, and they're basically all the same size. So either many of us are being weight weenies, or there's something else there (defensive side of the puck, maybe).

With the 98th selection in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, the Chicago Blackhawks are pleased to select defenceman Matthew Berkovitz of the USHS.

UWberk_large.jpg

Matthew is a good all around defenceman with solid skating ability. He closes lanes quickly and isn't afraid to rush the puck up the ice. He's committed to a great hockey program at the University of Wisconsin.

With our first of two 4th round picks, the The Winnipeg Jets will continue with the offense theme and pick Reid Gardiner.

"In Gardiner, we draft a player that has been falling a lot on the draft boards after a hot start to the year. He had a terrible second half, but we liked the player we saw during his first 30 games a lot and hope he can get back to that form. Gardiner is a talented player, but his best asset is his hockey sense. He is indeed a very smart player, so at the worst, we think he will find his niche in the NHL, but if he can become more consistent offensively, he has the skill to play on a second line someday."

I like the Holmstrom pick....kinda thought he'd be picked before 96th given his U-18 production. I've liked him since the summer...told Timmins to keep an eye on him at the U-18's as he had told me he wasn't on their radar before the U-18's..but after his performance Trevor was impressed with his game, other than the skating of course. He should be a third round pick.

With the "pick of the century", the Ottawa Senators are proud to select centre Michael Amadio of the OHL's North Bay Battallion.

Mike-Amadio-white4414.JPG

"Michael's offensive skills and potency in minor hockey is well-known to us, but we were further impressed by his ability at a young age to figure out how to use his growing frame to both protect the puck, and separate it from opponents. Though he dealt with a few growing pains (in multiple senses) defensively (bulking up through the year resulted in foot work getting exposed a bit by good players in the playoffs; handed a pretty big role at a young age, too), we're excited by the kind of player he is becoming, and the idea that next year he could earn the kind of developmental minutes/role(s) that you want any intriguing prospect to get, as soon as next season.

A player who models his game after Matt Duchene's offensive flair matched with defensive responsibility, he's committed to working on the kind of explosive first step he's going to need at the next step, and we expect a re-ignition of his latent offensive skill given a bit of opportunity and experience.

Thanks....you think Elgestal would have been available in round 5? I hesitated so much between him and a few but loved what I saw from him as well.

We have a lot of players we want to take here, so we might be reaching a little bit for this one, but we don't think he'll be there in the 5th, whereas the others might be, so we're going to take, from Plymouth in the OHL, Matthew Mistele.

"Once again, teams usually like rising players, and like Gardiner, Mistele has taken a drop this year compared to the last, but the Whalers as a whole had an abysmal season, 30 points worse than last year. Mistele had shown a lot of promise as a 17 year old, scoring 60 points while boasting a large frame. He has a good shot and can drop the gloves, which is something we like in Winnipeg."

By those rounds, it's hard for anyone to tell, but I'd expect to see Holmstrom go before Elgestal. Whatever that ends up meaning. :)
