Dreger on TSN right now.

Other coaches talked to Philly but told them Philly was not their 1st choice.
Torts interviewed with others but no offers but Philly.
Clarke is still involved and for sure wants the players to be uncomfortable And pushed for Torts who he knew would do that.
How can a guy still be involved if he’s sitting on a lake front sipping Mai Tais?

I am really starting to believe that as a condition of sale to Comcast ...Snider said Clarke has a lifetime job and veto power over all decisions. Only explanation for this continued lunacy.....

So Dreger, you’re saying that no coach in their right mind wants to coach this team with the entire situation they are in. So they are giving the job to a guy who hasn’t coached in years and only the Flyers are interested.
Say it aint so 😂😂

well mercifully he's 72 and had the sort of career that definitely shortens your lifespan.

Bobby Clarke has Jim Jones cult leader status amongst the older generation of fans & alumni. I don’t think it really has to be in writing that casket is likely the only way he goes out.

Dave Scott is just as clueless & delusional as Clarke & the others so you’re more talking about the what do the people above him think. Even if they correctly identify Clarke as a major issue getting rid of him is going rock the boat majorly.

A good chunk of their STH are people 50+ years old. A a good chunk of them have demonstrated they have blinders on when it comes to Clarke. Not just with poor hockey decisions but even with poor human behavior. They’re going to defend this guy no matter what. They would absolutely go nuclear if Comcast decided to push him out.

You’re saying this as fact…..

I have no doubt that the old guard had serious input here, but Chuck Fletcher is the President and General Manager. Every decision he has made has been HockeyGuy cliched through and through. The idea he wants a locker room commanding, veteran, defensive focused coach is not incongruent with anything he does because he doesn’t shut the f*** up about those very things.

Christ, I remember when Hextall was fired, the same writers said that Hakstol was shackled by him. We’d see a new coach! Wouldn’t you know, must of these people are exactly who we think they are.
I dont disagree that Fletcher has been in sync with Clarke for much of his time...but it was reported that Fletch did not want Torts...so there is at least one example of where he disagreed. We also never used to hear "clarke and co really pushed for Hayes and Niskanen...". Clarkes input has only been reported recently....which suggests hes taken a more active role.

My guess is Fletcher wants to turn this team over to the youth and start building around his draft picks. His "advisors" dont care about that...they want their old school coach and will happily toss any young player aside if that coach doesnt like them. I could see a disagreement brewing there.

If Fletcher is fired in the next week as is being speculated...I think we are looking at interim GM Lombardi who will fill in until they think Briere is ready.

This is the irony of Torts, of all the "win now" options, I think he's the only one compatible with a reload.
The others want to win now with a veteran team.
And it's obvious they were never seriously interested in a younger developmental type HC.

I mean I don’t give a shit how those people feel but they’re not paying me money. A few more lousy seasons & it might be moot as those people might not even be there to upset anyway because the product is so poor.
One thing I know BSH talked about one day is that the Flyers know their STH base is old and that it is a problem and they have no idea how to fix it. And now they’re pushing out folks like me (I am 37), who don’t have a family, so someone who is 37 and does have a family won’t be able to afford tickets and younger millennials and Zoomers can’t even afford a house much less have disposable income.

The Flyers actually have done things to push people out of the STH clubs that aren’t actual people (either brokers or companies, although a lot of them are in boxes), but you have a bad team AND an overall product that isn’t hot. And now for the first time you have a generation that isn’t invested nor nostalgic about the franchise.

Oh I can't wait for the board contrarians and team shills to polish this turd.

From reading a little of this thread it sounds like no one wanted to coach the flyers, Cam Atkinson makes a comment about Torts at the end of year meetings and the Flyers hire the coach that no other teams wanted.
It's more like the "win now" HCs want to go to where they have a better chance of winning now, and the Flyers aren't interested in the developmental type HCs.

There are only 32 NHL head coaching jobs in the world.

Tons of coaches would’ve killed for the opportunity.

Just because the top 1 or 2 candidates on the market had other options they preferred doesn’t mean no one wanted the Flyers job.
