Or maybe Torts was this team's first choice? Even worse, but not out of the realm of possibility.

If the Flyers were hellbent on hiring a Dino, which it looks like they were, Torts was the best Dino to hire.
At least he has a track record of working well with young teams.
Which makes him less likely to lobby to add a bunch of veterans (which I'm sure Trotz and some others would).

At worst, he'll leave the next HC a group of young players with solid fundamentals who only need to have their leashes loosened, and he'll ride out of town the uncoachable ones, sparing the next HC some headaches.

I don't know if there's a more on brand coach for Philadelphia than Tortorella. He could keep the flyers relevant with a losing record and that's big for corporate guys like Dave Scott.
I think there's another thing in that he was rumored to really want the job. There's a certain commitment and enthusiasm that can come from a desirable position that they may not have gotten from another coach.
My hope is as I've said before that he has a history with Atkinson so he won't argue too much about personelle. So long as he's playing the youth I don't really care if he ticks off provy or sits sanheim or whoever. Coming from the broadcast booth he doesn't have the clout to go with his players so he has to find a way to get these guys to play flyers hockey

Super glad the team really took their time and waited 7 months to end up with Tortarella . All that waiting and interviewing and due diligence really paid off this time, as they hired the one coach no one else wants and could of had 7 months ago.

This is a great higher if you don’t want the Flyers to attract any high priced high end free agents. Unfortunately it means they will overpay for some middle of lineup shot blocker, but at least it won’t be that expensive of a contract.

Even though Tortorella did a solid job overall in Columbus and has shown a willingness to adapt if needed, this feels like the worst possible hire. He's not the type of coach for a rebuild and he's not good enough anymore to make a team a contender.
