If that does end up being true and they hire him, it's almost impossible to discount the chance that they're trying to make their Ristolainen investment worthwhile. They committed long-term to a dman who is only slightly useful within 3 feet of the crease, so why not cater to him by having the whole team collapse around the net?

They just custom-catered the last offseason to Kevin f***ing Hayes so it's not remotely hard to believe.

First off, literally anyone else instead of Torts. Any. One. If I had my druthers it'd be Grunberg, but Torts is the worst case scenario.

John Tortorella is a coach who has no clue that the game has passed him by. He runs an archaic system. But it's the kind of system that is just okay-enough to really hide just how truly bad you are, while stifling any creative, modern play. It's designed to be mediocre. So what you get is a team stuck; they'll be just good enough to where they'll always be on the fringe of the playoffs (in a league where 50% makes the playoffs this is unimpressive), but never good enough to be good. They'll get dumped in the first round by the Rangers in 5 games, or miss out on the playoffs by 4 points.

It's buoyed by a GM who has no use for analytics. So now you have a coach who clearly doesn't give a shit that analytics can help him get the best of his players and a GM who has no use for them. The Rasmus Ristolainen mistake (which was doubled down by the horrible 5 year extension) is going to become the norm for this organization over the next 3-5 John Tortorella years. It will also, likely, extend out Fletcher's stay (the true cancer currently).

Your average meathead is going to love it though. Oh, boy, look, Torts is mad again! Nevermind they run the most outdated dump and chase nonsense, Torts yelled at the media man. Haha!

This is a move destined to just further double down on the identity crisis the Flyers have. An organization who clings to the shadows of an identity long gone, in a game that has left that style of play in the past. The Flyers will be just good enough they can't get any truly good draft picks, and just bad enough they're never good. It's a move that will result in no changes for an organization who desperately needs them. It's a move that doesn't seriously move the needle. The Flyers have such low aspirations...being mediocre has become good enough. This is a mediocre team, hiring a coach who is the explimification of mediocrity.

Frankly, the team would be better served hiring a true dumpster fire. It would be cleansing in some fashion. Maybe you'd get a truly modern mind in here to revamp the team. I'm not advocating for losses, only that I think it'd be a better outcome in the long run. Instead, we will be doing this dance again in 3-5 years...no closer to a cup than we were on June 15th, 2022.
