AV talked about taking what they other team gives you. If they're jamming the blue line, dump it in behind on the rush. If they're hanging back ready for that, enter with possession. I was highly skeptical, but he did say it. In the end I think the team made those situational adjustments maybe 4 total times and otherwise just spent every shift dumping pucks in on teams who knew they were always going to do that.
Hakstol said a lot of modern things about dmen and their role for pushing offense. The way he described it, I was very excited to see what he'd do with our prospects. Then the execution was all "staple to blue line" and "shoot from furthest point" as he actively favored the least suited dmen over those most suited to such play.
I remember the media gave AV chances to atone for past sins (young players, etc), and he basically threw the blame on others. Egomaniacal. I think I do remember him talking about the dump thing, which became code of never not dumping. If anything, I remember him just being a great self-promoter (no one thought more highly of him than him), but I don’t remember any real modern hockey statements to hang your hat on.
Hakstol was a weird case with his defense handling. He actually was quite good with defense activating, so that wasn’t all bluster. What he valued and who he valued just couldn’t have been further apart. He also couldn’t solve the o-zone. Deliciously ironic was him publicly announcing he values chances more than shots, then designing a system entirely based around point shots.
I don’t think I ever had a “this guy gets it” moment with their philosophies. Vigneault is a stubborn mule, and we knew his drill. Hakstol was wait and see. Just as important, the Flyers have a knack for hiring coaches with the emotional IQs of Vulcans.
