AV talked about taking what they other team gives you. If they're jamming the blue line, dump it in behind on the rush. If they're hanging back ready for that, enter with possession. I was highly skeptical, but he did say it. In the end I think the team made those situational adjustments maybe 4 total times and otherwise just spent every shift dumping pucks in on teams who knew they were always going to do that.

Hakstol said a lot of modern things about dmen and their role for pushing offense. The way he described it, I was very excited to see what he'd do with our prospects. Then the execution was all "staple to blue line" and "shoot from furthest point" as he actively favored the least suited dmen over those most suited to such play.

I remember the media gave AV chances to atone for past sins (young players, etc), and he basically threw the blame on others. Egomaniacal. I think I do remember him talking about the dump thing, which became code of never not dumping. If anything, I remember him just being a great self-promoter (no one thought more highly of him than him), but I don’t remember any real modern hockey statements to hang your hat on.

Hakstol was a weird case with his defense handling. He actually was quite good with defense activating, so that wasn’t all bluster. What he valued and who he valued just couldn’t have been further apart. He also couldn’t solve the o-zone. Deliciously ironic was him publicly announcing he values chances more than shots, then designing a system entirely based around point shots.

I don’t think I ever had a “this guy gets it” moment with their philosophies. Vigneault is a stubborn mule, and we knew his drill. Hakstol was wait and see. Just as important, the Flyers have a knack for hiring coaches with the emotional IQs of Vulcans.

Indeed.

My main point is that coaches are often able to speak competent concepts. Speaking and doing are different, though. So Tocchet saying nice things means nothing on its own

NRD said on his recent podcast that Dallas sent out feelers to Tocchet in season to see if he would want to be their head coach. If he said yes (which he obviously didn’t) they were going to change out Tocchet for Bowness right then. He said they could try to take another run at Tocchet but if not it could be an internal hire like NYI.
Friedman said similar things today about Tocchet. It’s almost as if the Dallas job is his for the taking.

I don't know given the state of the roster that this hire will be the long term option. Part of what is intriguing in say Tortorella is the mark he leaves on these guys when someone else takes over in two years. That's when Montgomery becomes really interesting. I liked his system in Dallas and I think he can be a long term guy.

The Blues are the team the Flyers should be trying to emulate (not the Islanders). No "superstars," just deep with a lot of excellent players. We dont really have a path to becoming a top-heavy superstar led team.
The team that Hextall built.

The Flyers have plenty of talent for the right HC.
What they don't have is a veteran laden team like 2019-20 for AV, where you don't have to do a lot of coaching.

A patient HC who wants to work with young players could turn this team around quickly, but it takes a commitment by the HC and the FO to be willing to struggle for a year or two while living with growing pains. You have a lot of young players plus #5 and a good chance at a top ten pick next summer. Carolina would be the franchise I'd look to emulate.

A lot of what HCs do is dictated by personnel, Trotz was far different in Washington with top talent than on the Island when he basically had two lines and two fourth lines. Hakstol had one line here and a bunch of 3rd pair D-men, so he played it safe b/c he didn't have the talent to skate with anyone with the Couts line off the ice. Same in Seattle - it'll be interesting to see what he does in two years with the veterans gone and a young roster.

Would Tocchet leave his gig for an assistant coach position? Almost certainly not, but I think best case scenario is Montgomery as HC and Tocchet as one of his assistants.

Tocchet has security at TNT. Tocchet very well could just be a bad head coach who exacerbated issues in Tampa & Arizona but it’s not like he was handed a Ferrari & wrapped around a pole in both spots either.

So he might be pickier in where he wants to go. He turned down Dallas in season apparently but that could have just been a timing thing too. He might not just take a job for the sake of having an NHL HC job again.

I think Montgomery is their guy...but theyre gonna set up meetings with Trotz n Tortz n others to make it look.like theyre doing a thorough job.
