I know this is sort of off topic but I just looked at Jim Montgomery's career stats and holy shit, dude was a rockstar in college and the AHL.
It was a religious experience for 17 yr. ol.d me when I found out his wife was the hot blonde in the player's wives section at the old arena in Hershey. She had the kind of balcony you could do Shakespeare off of.

I mean shouldn't a competent owner do that anyway before interviewing the guy? Doesn't he need Bettman's permission to return?

His/their point was that Quenneville applying to come back on his own wouldn't be enough for Bettman to move. It would take an owner putting weight behind it to start the process. It was specifically noted that there were no expectations of outcome, just that this is what would be required for it to be considered.

But what moron of an owner would interview the guy not knowing if he'd be allowed back anyway? You nearly certainly would always approach Bettman before interviewing him.

Oh, I know one.

I think we need a situation where the Flyers interview Q and offer to hire him only for the NHL to tell them no. That would be peak Flyers. Inject it into my veins.

I took it as Friedman saying that an owner would have to be willing to put his name on this in public. The league won't do it for them. The framing of the story changing from Quenneville applied and was reinstated is very different from the Flyers want the league to reinstate him so they can hire him. Now the team is the story.

I've been of the opinion that they were waiting for him to shake free, but I don't think Scott would be willing to go this far.

Ahhh. Ok, that context makes it make much more sense.

P.S.

I can't help but wonder if the interview was scheduled for today right up until Neely suggested the Boston job might come open. Have to think that appeals MUCH more to Trotz.
Meh. Trotz is set to interview with Vegas next week.

He is interviewing these clubs, not the other way around, so he’ll take his time.

I personally only care about a coach that will help younger players progress. With Chuck at the helm, this team will have no chance. I expect them to suck next year and hopefully Chuck will be fired next summer.

Yeah, when you're the best option on the market and you know it, that gives you a ton of power. Nobody with a coaching vacancy this year is going to turn down Trotz if he's truly interested, so he has the luxury of picking his spot.

I actually wonder if there’s a single coach the Flyers and Fletcher would prefer to Trotz. I’m talking a full coaches draft and Flyers won the 1st pick. I think the Flyers would take Trotz still; they’re so drooly over him.

They idolize the 2019 Islanders as their hockey ideal.

I saw him play quite a few games for the Phantoms in the late 90's. He and Peter White were beasts at that level. They won the Calder Cup in 98 together.
Was he too small for that era to make the jump into the NHL? His numbers at Maine are sick and he went undrafted

That's Liverpool ownership. After some initial hiccups in learning the league, they have not put a foot wrong. Winning in the margins constantly. Attention to every detail. They are EVERYTHING the Flyers are not.
Look at the RedSox and Roush-Fenway(Now Roush-Fenway-Kesolowski) Racing and it gets a big MEH...

Trotz would interview here only to get the market hotter (offer higher) from the team(s) he really wants to go to.
I'm betting on Vegas, similar to the Caps when Trotz took over.

Flyers would offer the interview to show they're trying, but I'm sure the internal argument is between a Dino HC (Torts, Maurice, etc) and a development oriented guy (Montgomery, Groulx, etc).
