And Matthews is neither McDavid or Crosby.

Correct. But if he was pissed off enough/ willing to go to market and framing his value as what he could get there/ less than what McDavid is worth rather than lass than Mcdavid signed for than theres only two choices to be made.

Is he bluffing
Is he right

Dubas obviously assessed it as no/yes. That Matthews would hold to his demands, and he would get what he wanted via offersheet. And we'll never know if he was right or wrong with that assessment.

But either way( circling back to the orignal point) JT's contract played no role im the negotiation for Matthews side

Mcdavid makes 4 mil a year more dude.

Come the f*** on.

He may have made a bit less of a percentage then Sid did when he signed but Sid is also on 12 years and has multiple cups

Crosby signed for the cap equivalent of like 13.4 x5 , before winning a cup. If Mcdavid wanted that he would have gotten it instantly

If mcdavid got that he would have

He's 3 times the hockey player of Matthews. Sid is as well

The fact that Dubas let matthws be a "unicorn" and this is a way to defend it is a joke

It shows if anything that he's the worst negotiator in the league.

Maybe have a nut sack instead if letting Matthews dictate terms.

Lou definitely wouldn't have gotten f***ed up the ass like Dubas did. Matthews is a bridge that is at insane money he's great but it might be the dumbest contract ever negotiated by a team and this gets shown when every other gm in the NHL has ignored that "precident"

He's from America guys guess he's earned an extra 2 mil a year.

Thoughts from a dude who couldn't even win the OHL

Time for our daily reminder that the minimum age on this site is 13, and so is the reading level of the average North American adult.

How many Brampton batallion jerseys are you going to buy next year when your boy is GM there?

If things continue on this way and we were to rebuild/retool whether its this management group or a new one should Dubas/Shanny be fired, i would only keep:

Matthews
Nylander
Bunting
Spezza
Brodie
Sandin
Liljegren
Campbell

Everyone else swapped out for picks, prospects, new roster players.

Hmmm, so strange. I was almost certain last night was Dubas's last game. I can't believe he wasn't fired.

Knowing the jokers on the MLSE Board like I do, I believe they will never fire Dubas. He is the epitome of what they want in the next generation. He looks good in a suit. He talks the way they would like their grandkids to talk. Heck, they would be thrilled if he dated their granddaughters. What happens on the ice takes a backseat to what they want in a GM.

I am a fan of the LA Rams....they signed Jared Goff and Todd Gurley to stupidly expensive deals way too early(2yrs before they had to) and realized they messed up. The fact the Rams can admit they made a mistake and move on is one thing Dubas cannot do for some reason.
Easier to do in the NFL because football contracts aren't guaranteed.

That was a pretty good day in hindsight. Anymore of him around? (The guy on the left)

True story. As a very naive young lad I got a chance to talk to Harold Ballard at MLG and I asked him why he didn't go out and get himself some better players so they would, at least, have a chance to win the cup. He looked at me and smiled, "Do you see any empty seats out there? Why should I pay anymore money than I have to?" At least, he was honest and knew what he was doing. That is more than I can say about our current ownership team.

In the nfl you eat the dead cap all at once. Pretty much it’s the unallocated signing bonus once a player gets past any guaranteed base salary. Nhl, you are eating the buyout over multiple years if you need to go that route.

I've been saying for months, Marner for Eichel. If the Sabres are serious about ending their half decade tank and want to ice a competitive team, no team in the league can beat Marner as a return.
Its a great return for them. Even if Marner is only a 65-70 point player for them, its a good deal at the real dollars paid.

Auston wanted 13+ on an 8 year deal with a career high of 70 points.

McDavid signed for 12.5 x 8 after winning the art, heart and lindsay.

1. Why did matthews think he deserved more than mcdavid?

2. Why did matthews not care about leaving any money on the table to help the team?

3. Why did dubas give in?

If matthews signed for 11 x 8, marner wouldn't have gotten 10.9 x 6.

Just a terrible contract.
Apparently, what I’ve learned in this thread is that none of that matters, if you hire the right agent.

Give Spezza the captaincy, not even joking. Guy's got more give a shit in one pinkie than the rest of the team combined.

To be honest, it started with the JT signing. I loved it at the time, but in retrospect, that started the chain of events that led us to where we are today.
Yes. And it was one of the first significant moves Dubas made once he was appointed GM.

As a UFA, Tavares would have gotten a similar contract elsewhere, so I don’t blame Dubas for signing a bad deal with him.

However, Tavares didn’t fit with the Leafs future plans, which at the time was retaining their young stars, building the team from within and through the draft.

I almost wonder if Dubas let his ego get the better of him with Tavares, in that he wanted to show up his old boss Lou and sign one of his best players.

Dubas’ first move in signing Tavares, might ultimately prove to be his first but ultimately fatal mistake.

So... Dubas just had to watch the Brayden Point's of the world sign reasonable deals and then tell Mitch to just sit. The fact that Dubas was so sure the 'landscape' had changed and said this was the case for RFA players was just so stupid. He fell for the schtick that Marner peddled and assumed Rantonen etc. would just sign the same stupid contracts. In the end it's Dubas who messed this up by caving in.
Dubas set the table for weak negotiations when he caved with Nylander.

Eichel may. not even play this year with his injury.

Problem with that narrative is that it doesn't hold in a cap world. I could see a cynic looking back at the Pat Quinn era and saying, why do the Leafs spend less than Detroit, New York, Dallas, Colorado and Philadelphia year after year? But in the cap era, especially the Shanahan era, there's so many extra millions that have gone into Robidas Island, Phil Kessel, the bloated think tank. MLSE deserves winning results for the money they're spending on this team.

Problem is we blew the budget on John Tavares and have been bending over backwards ever since to pay for the internal inflation. He was just the slow burn worst thing to happen to this team halting the build in it's tracks, escalating salaries internally for the Big 3 who were actually responsible for turning the team around and then triggering the whole tear down of 'expensive' assets.

The Leafs have a salary cap issue because 4 players take up too much of their available cap space.

Trading Marner for Eichel doesn’t fix the cap issue, unless of course Eichel’s career is over.

My point was that the lousy team under Ballard was planned by him for financial reasons. The lousy Leaf team under current ownership is just a waste of a lot of money with the same result. I respect Ballard a lot more than the current ownership.
