Dubas completely handcuffed himself by dedicating too much of his salary cap space to 4 players.

Every personnel decision he now makes, he makes compensating for the fact he has very limited salary cap space to properly build the rest of the team around his core 4 players.

Dubas needs to recognize and admit the salary structure he insisted could work, isn’t going to work and he needs to adjust accordingly.

But he hasn’t and probably never will.

Every personnel decision he makes now is tainted by this key mistake.

As a workaround, Dubas keeps trying to find creative ways to compensate like; finding reclamation projects, using draft pics and prospects to acquire low cap hit players, etc. But this approach is slowly weakening organizational depth as he’s overpaying for assets to compensate for his lack of cap space and unworkable salary structure.

But at this point, it seems like Dubas has dug in and has decided that this is the hill he will die on.

It's always strange that we keep seeing the suggestion that Dubas ran Martin out of town. The guy was banished to the press box as a healthy scratch by Mike Babcock while Lou was still GM.

A fourth line player making his salary was eventually going to end up being an unaffordable luxury for the team though.

And brings in guys like Thornton and Nick Ritchie that can't f***ing skate

Ritchie is a fat slob that will do nothing for this team.

but didn't you hear, they got together at the cottage this summer and had a team building event.

surely that means the core believes in each other, no?

With all the talk that nobody cares about the regular season, it seems the core has bought in and are waiting for the playoffs to take it to the next level :sarcasm:

Seriously filling out your roster yearly from the dumpster is not how you build a SC winner. At some point somebody at MLSEL will finally get it.

I hope Kyle Dubas takes advantage of his buffoonery before his inevitable firing. He could host a dunk tank in downtown Toronto at $5 a throw and make some serious cash for a good charity.

If Robertson and Lily were actually as good as people make them out to be they would be playing minutes in the NHL like sandin.

Amadio was a joke pick up as well we need to stop getting everyone from the Soo teams that also never won anything.

Dubas will be GM of the Niagara ice dogs next year
I don't have a dog in this race and I've been saying this stuff about Dubas for years. But just letting you know that Amadio played his junior days with the Battalion. He never played for the Greyhounds.

There were a lot of people saying at the time that signing Tavares was a mistake.
Ive said it 1000 times that the rebuild wasn’t complete even when they had 100 points.

The problem is that other than 16,34 and 88, the pipeline hasn't produced much. As such, Dubas is forced to go dumpster diving every summer with virtually an empty wallet. The folks down at MLSEL are f***ing dilutional if they think that is how you build a SC winner. The proof is in the pudding.

It's incredibly misleading. The start to the season Babcock had "when he was fired" was 9-10-4, with bad underlying metrics. Babcock was not fired for going 2-2-1 with strong underlying metrics. Countless teams, including Cup winners in the very same year you're referencing, have started seasons 2-2-1. It was a weak attempt to equate situations that are not remotely similar.

When we chat, I think of pretzels.

Have the Leafs underachieved in the post season with Keefe at the helm?

5 games in... are we overachieving or underachieving?

Somebody’s seat is getting hot. If not Keefe... who?

Brown is they guy the Leafs should had tried their best to keep. He is much better than AJ and Kap who Dubas kept and ended up trading away.

I think he knew that more teams coveted Kapanen and his return would be better. But I agree Brown would be a good fit. Maybe something like Nylander Matthews and Brown.

John Tavares contract has 3 years left after this year. Holy he's gonna be such a bad contract those last 2 years

Hopefully leafs can achieve something in the playoffs with him being a contributing player otherwise JT contract going to be an all time bad UFA signing. Destroyed our team

Sadly it might stop the masses that bitched about the last year of Marleau's contract which cost us a 1st to get rid of so Dubas could overpay, you know who.

Tra

If they lose tonight to a pens team without Crosby, Malkin , Carter, Rust, Letang, this place is gonna be worse than the dark web lol

I’m sure the team has all the excuses lined up.

It’s a back to back, it’s on the road, Matthews still getting back in the game etc

Dont want to hear it any more. Get it done or get off the team

FWIW

Jared McCann leads the Seattle Kraken in scoring with 3 goals 2 assists and 5 points in 5 games.

He would lead the Leafs in goals and tied in points. I personally thought it was a mistake not to protect him.

McCann might look good beside Matthews and Marner trying to replace Hyman, as the Ritchie experiment is not going all that well. IMO
But Holl only makes 2 mil so he must be protected :sarcasm:

There is no actual hockey related reason to protect Holl over McCann. Apparently bragging about accounting is more important than winning hockey games.

Holl is only here because depth D was being paid too much at the time. Basically a fear move. Should have kept McCann and then figured things out from there. Muzzin-Lil doesn't look too bad.

Yes, it seems that way.

I’m guessing this has to be ego driven.

It’s as if he’s determined to prove all his naysayers wrong. So instead of just having a single purpose of trying to find a way, any way, to win a cup—a difficult enough task on its own—he’s instead decided he has a dual purpose of trying to win a cup but doing so by using his own unconventional approach.

At this point, if Dubas won’t pivot on his own, someone from higher management needs to give him a directive to start the process of restructuring the team salary for better balance or he gets fired.

Matthews has three seasons left before he is a RFA, so time is of the essence.

Any player making 1.5 to get scratched regularly is an unaffordable luxury for any serious team.

Most likely. I was just trying to state that while it's fair to mention his being a healthy scratch, I would have expected him to be on the move even without that, due to both making 2.5 M to play on the fourth line and also with the ELCs expiring/about to expire.

Had they stayed the course and hoarded draft picks they’d be in much better situation today.
Not winning a playoff round, having no cap space, not having a first round pick and going into a season with your fingers crossed is hard to fathom.
