The Morgan Rielly Conundrum

  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
What an awful take. If Morgan Rielly is willing to re-sign at 5.5 you very easily take that every day of the week.
He has already stopped skating like he did a couple years ago. He was slow last year and had to pak it in. Not looking the same as a couple years ago after a long rest this year either. His game has regressed. I see it every game. He can still skate and get points because of who he plays with. Then we see him miss assignments one after the other in his own end. The 1st year of his new deal will be his 29 year old year. He’ll want 7 years or 8 with us. I think Sandin will be replacing him. Thats my expectation. Everything factored in i really don’t want to re-sign him. I like defensemen that are adequate defensively and he’s a sh!tshow in his own end.

I really think Mo loves being a Toronto Maple Leaf. I think anyone who thinks that getting rid of Mo will be a seamless handoff to the next guy in line is sadly mistaken. This guy consistently plays the most minutes on the back end, runs our PP1, puts up a f*** ton of points. Is he on for a lot of goals against? Ya, but that's kind of what the odds would be telling you would happen when you play half the game. He is 26 years old, entering the prime of his career and is a beloved leader in the room. Should have been our Captain in my mind. You can argue whether or not he is a true #1 D-Man in the NHL or not, even though I really don't know how you could place 30 Defensemen in the league ahead of him. But fact is, on our team his is the #1 d-man. With the most responsibility of anyone on the D-core. Ask St. Louis how things are going sans Pietrangelo...ask Vancouver how things are going losing their minutes eater in Tanev. Mo is a cornerstone of the franchise, he will be resigned. I think he will take an 8 year deal with a lower AAV, because I think he loves playing for the Leafs, and more importantly wants to win with the Leafs

Never underestimate a player's role in team chemistry.

We all see what's happened to Vancouver after Tanev/Markstrom leaving. The same applies to Rielly. He is an important part of that locker room and is a solid defenseman too.

They have to re-sign him.

Plus, seeing Rielly in any other jersey would be weird.

Can we just enjoy this season? He isn't UFA until after next year.
I'm sure we'll hear all the fuss soon about how Leafs can't afford him and he's leaving blah blah blah.

Here here!!

Resulting cap rise isn’t likely for 4 years.
Worse case scenario you get 4 years.
This is what I think though. Pent up demand for hockey will fill nhl stands as soon as covid is done. The canadian TV deal is more than double what the US one is now with the US deal finishing this year. This despite the fact that only 22% of the teams are in canada as of next year. With pirating going on like crazy, we can see exclusive sports content inflating by quite a bit.
Revenue will soar and meet the threshold for the cap to go up.

He has 10 points in his last 7, no? How are you guys complaining right now. This is crazy.

Yes, but, defensively he’s been an absolute dumpster fire.

And we’re not complaining. The team as a whole is playing great. We’re just thinking “What do we do with him past next year“?

IMO, if he wants a dime over 6 million, I would cut bait with him.

Well then he's leaving. He should want more than 6 million per

I'm not sure why everyone keeps raving about Rielly's offense. He's getting top pp minutes with the 2nd ranked pp team in the league. He doesn't create anything on the pp, he literally just stays up top and passes it to either Marner or Matthews and they create the plays. I'm sorry but there's 0 chance I'm signing him for anything more then his current contract and even then I'd look at moving him instead.

This deal will be very interesting because Dubas and Co will have to be mindful of the fact Matthews contract is up soon after.

If he wants too much they probably have to move him to make sure they can fit in Matthews new contract.

Rielly and his agent will know this as well. Nylander, Matthews and Marner all knew the team had plenty of space at the time of their deals. Rielly knows they have very little now so it becomes a "do you want to be a Leaf or play somewhere else" situation.

12gl/35pt pace at even strength is very good.

And Muzzin has 8 even strength points where as Rielly only has 6, so what does that tell you. When you have one of the best offenses in the league, your defenseman are going to get points. Rielly doesn't create anything on his own and if it wasn't for his speed, people would be screaming to have him benched. His defense is just absolutely horrible and with his lack of iq and actually puck skill, he's not going to get any better then he currently is. Trade him now while you can get a great return

Oh yes. I even think they'll earn more revenue this year than anticipated. New TV deal is also coming up and I do believe more fans in arenas next year

Down a billion last year, likely 2-3 billion this year, plus next year likely won’t be back to 100% revenue.
Canadian teams have to pay for flying half the time this year for AHL teams, instead of bussing.
Plus all the covid expenses, maybe I’m wrong but I’m not hopeful for the foreseeable future.

This is why I said all along, I wish the league would of held out for pro rated contracts, to get back to normal sooner.

That is very fair and Rielly seems like the type of guy to take a fair deal and not try to squeeze every penny out of the team. Seems like he likes it here, is a leader and well liked by teammates so lets hope for a discount.

To be clear I want rielly resigned I jut worry how it will effect things. Figuring out the long term goalie situation (I.e. resign Andy, trade him etc) will be important/have implications too
