The Morgan Rielly Conundrum

We don't need to trade Willy.

Kessel's retention also comes off the books when it's time to re-sign Mo (if we do). So we're already working with 6.2M off the bat. We can trade Kerfoot and re-sign him no problem.

We could make it work, but it would this and last seasons spendthrift depth look like a lotto winner splurge spending. Assuming 7.5 to Mo, 4 to Hyman, and an 82.5m cap we'd be sitting with 17 million in space for all of- a complete bottom 6 F group, both goalies, Sandin, a 6 D, and spares.

It's doable, but you have to wonder if at some point (hopefully with a cup) we step off this tightrope and extend the window by recouping some major young assets.

As much as I love Rielly and know his skillset will be missed, I'd honestly be open to trading him if it means the Leafs defense actually gets better at playing defense (more toughness wouldn't hurt either).

For instance, I think a trade with Anaheim that consists of Rielly++ for Lindholm+Manson would be a great move that'd significantly improve the Leafs roster as a whole.

I would also trade Reilly. He is an outstanding skater, but does not have a top end hockey sense in the form of vision, deception, decison making, high confidence, is not there.

Leafs will only keep 3 out of 4 this summer : Andersen, Hyman, Rielly and Nylander. I expect Rielly is the odd man out

Should be noted he has a 10 team no-trade list

If you're moving him his peak value will be this summer. New team gets him for $5 mill cap hit but only have to pay him $3 (Leafs pay $2mill signing bonus on July 1st)

I thought he was horrendous in the first 10 games but he's been a lot better the last 5 for the most part. The only reason you should trade him is if his contract demands are too high.

Leaf fans have to finally realize Mo is not a #1 dman.

Won’t win a cup with him playing 22 minutes a night

Wow. I know Rielly is not the ideal number one but with our budget structure we probably can't pay an 8mil #1D. We could have signed Petro and then traded Rielly, that would have made sense but would have also cost Kerfoot.

People suggesting we put Dermott or Sandin in his spot and move him are asking for another first round exit. If we force Muzzin into the #1 spot everything gets weaker as you go down. I know Holl is playing well but him anchoring a 2nd unit with Dermott or Sandin is not a formula for winning a Cup IMO.

I think we are stuck with him.

My first instinct isn't to move on from Rielly, but just assuming we are thinking along those lines, would it make sense to talk to a struggling Columbus about a Rielly for Jones pending UFA swap plus whatever they need to make up the difference? They both hit free agency at the end of next year, and if you've decided Rielly isn't the guy, maybe it would make sense to grab Jones, pay him the money Rielly would demand and run with a revamped blueline?
