The Morgan Rielly Conundrum

He has my permission to seek more elsewhere.

Yes, I think he will be overpaid, however Lidstrom didn't win his first until later in 20's IIRC.

No I don't think he has Lidstrom's processing.

Offerring him $5m is pretty much giving him your permission. Sure let him walk but you better have a plan to replace him. At the moment we do not have a better option.

It's a tough position. I don't think we have any internal options to replace his offense. No offense to sandin or lily etc..

Rielly really seems like a life time leafer. He is the heart and soul and the leader in the locker room. I think he takes a pay cut to stay but he's still going to get a nice salary.

I think it's reasonable to discuss his future here. It's questionable if he is a fit at over 7 million per year. That's a fair conversation.

But anyone complaining about him, or thinking he can easily be replaced, are out to lunch. He does so much for this team.

There's some defensive mistakes. But every team has these issues. Look at the types of defenders who lead their team in TOI. Doughty, Karlsson, Ekblad, Fox, Nurse, Letang, Werenski, and a bunch of others. These guys make mistakes. Not everyone has a Josi or Jones.

We're lucky to have Rielly, and we'll have a huge issue if he walks. You can't just pop over to Walmart and get a 23+ minute defender.

I know, it is a risk. Especially, if you protect him and lose him a year later.

Best option would be to move him for another, younger, controllable asset.

Rielly reminds me a bit of Kessel in that he has serious flaws but also serious strengths. Unlike Kessel, he brings serious value added as a natural leader, role model, and is just a generally beloved guy on the team. The dimension he adds to the blue line is not something we can currently replace internally. I would be sad to see him go.

I think, of all the players we've had to deal with over the past 3 years, Rielly is the most likely to be compromising with a new contract.

Best Defenseman we’ve had since Salming !
Dynamic player
Terrific individual
Great teammate
Captain Material
Incredible skater
Gobbles up minuets
Puts up credible points
And so much more intangibles

but oh boy he’s not the ultimate best defensive defenceman

you know what ?
Players that are willing to take the puck and try to be creative most of the time , do give up the odd scoring chances , forwards or defence .. that’s the nature of playing high octane offence ...

I’ll take MR any day on my team , any day !
Sometimes , some of us leaf fans don’t appreciate what we have ..

love Sandin and Dermott and some of our other prospects and young players , but come on ,They are not MR

also this kid gives his heart out for our team and us as fans and has since coming in as a youngster under horrific coaching and teams
Give me a break to any of you that shiiiiiiite on him
Go Leafs Go

This deal will be very interesting because Dubas and Co will have to be mindful of the fact Matthews contract is up soon after.

If he wants too much they probably have to move him to make sure they can fit in Matthews new contract.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Jake Muzzin take a pay cut to re-sign in Toronto, so I could see Rielly doing the same thing and still signing for a little more money than he's making today.

Caps suck .. and are for loser franchises and fan bases !!!!!
if you can’t support your team under the worse conditions of down times and you can’t afford your franchise as owners , get lost and go buy a minor league team or Arena football team ...
Can’t stand professional sports financial caps , never have , never will , especially hockey’s version ..

The problem is Riellys skillset is the type overvalued by the market. I have no doubt there will be teams that will offer him more than we can afford on our cap. He'll have to want to be here over maximizing his earnings.
Couldn't Rielly get a lot of endorsement deals by re-signing in Toronto to make up the difference with what other teams might offer him.

There is no conundrum. Rielly's defensive shortcomings are far outweighed by his offensive contributions. 11 points in 14 games while playing 25 minutes a night and some of y'all are ready to run him out of town because he's mediocre in his own zone? He tilts the ice in our favour with his offense and getting defenders who click offensively with our star forward talent would be priority #1 if we didn't have Mo. He's a leader on the team, a passionate player, and really f***in good at what the coach puts him on the ice to do. Teams that don't have offensive defenders go out and pay $11m a year for guys like Burns and Karlsson, or give big minutes to Tyson Barrie. I shake my head at all of these Rielly threads because it's clear that a lot of people just don't realize how good we've got it. Tony DeAngelo got 4.9m a year and is an absolute turnstile in addition to being a world-class douchebag. The league places enormous value on guys like Rielly and thank goodness for our sake that Keefe and the Leafs do too.

Like every player, there is a price at which he is too expensive. His defensive shortcomings are why he won't be getting a 10m contract, but I think we make every effort to re-sign him. He's obviously not our best player, that's Matthews, but I think Rielly is the beating heart of the team.

muzzin took a small pay cut, I think reilly will as well. but how much is the question isn't it.
Really have liked Muzzin and everything he brings
But
There’s a player we could and should move out to make room for our younger players
Also ZB as well
Both have the challenges now and moving forward in the skating dept . In today’s and tomorrow’s NHL
MR
TJ
Holl
Sandin
Lilly
Leotenin ? Spelling
Dermott
On and on
Great skating and puck movers , that’s what you need today

I agree, I just don't think as of now leafs have a single dman that could replace Reilly's offense, plus his intangibles are great. But is one of those we won't know until we try situations.

Can we just enjoy this season? He isn't UFA until after next year.
I'm sure we'll hear all the fuss soon about how Leafs can't afford him and he's leaving blah blah blah.

I think all of us would agree at 5.5M - 6.5M likely everyone on here would sign him in a second ... but his offense, which is how contracts are done in NHL, likely commands more ... so it will be Rielly's call does he want a lower AAV up front bonus contract where we can resign Zach and add another goaler

The intention of this thread is definitely not to complain, nor are many I believe. Rielly is very good and brings A LOT, but as is the case with the cap era, something has to give.

The question is whether the consensus is that something Morgan Rielly or someone else?

Does it? Seems like nothing is giving with the Leafs.

6.2MM x 8.
Pay the man. Will look cheap after the US tv deal and the resulting cap rise.

This conversation is at least a year early. I do think there’s reason to look ahead and decide whether Rielly should be re-signed or not, but musing about trading him now is foolhardy and shortsighted. We finally have a defence that’s working after years of struggle at the position and people want to throw away our horse back there because reasons.
